Welcome to Magpie Performers 2019 pantomime, Cinderella! It doesn’t feel five minutes ago that the newly formed Magpie team was walking into DanceEast for the first time to put on our first production in January last year. Now a year on, we’re bigger, better and a lot more excitable! We’re grateful to have many familiar faces back with us for this year’s panto, with a range of skills and talents kept with them as well. We are also excited to introduce some new faces of the Magpie family. From new junior members doing their very first production, to adults who are looking to take on a new challenge, the new cast members have really been a great addition to the team. As well as new members on stage, the behind the scenes team has also expanded, meaning more hands-on deck to make the show extra special in every way possible! With the team having grown so much, we’re sure you’ll enjoy our version of Cinderella that extra bit more! We are also very excited to welcome Go Cruise and Travel with Hayley and Kevin to the Magpie family, as sponsors of this year’s production. This script had been in the works for over a year before I approached the Committee with it, asking to direct this show I had been planning and typing away at. In honesty Cinderella wasn’t the first Panto I planned on directing, and instead was actually Peter Pan, however shortly before it came to me starting Magpie I had a dream of a stage of people performing Cinderella, and took that as a sign that the story of the girl in the glass shoe had to be my first Panto to direct. I myself have been in two productions of Cinderella, firstly as an ensemble member in a 2010 production, and then I got the privilege of playing the Fairy Godmother in 2013 with another organisation. I knew I was no Cinderella, but I also knew with two versions of the same show under my belt I couldn’t stop there, so the only advance from there had to be directing. I had many ideas on how I wanted my version of Cinderella to go, from characters roles and personalities being experimented with, to ambitious set designs and layouts. Unfortunately not everything made it to the final version on the stage, but in the places of what was, are new things which are just as good or better! The biggest challenge when it came to writing and directing Cinderella was how I was going to tell the tale. Of course Cinderella was bullied by her step-family, her Fairy Godmother gets her to the ball, she loses her shoe and eventually finds her happily ever after, but the issue was: How would I tell a story that’s been told so many times, in a new, exciting way? This years script takes a new look at the story of Cinderella, as it tells the story of rags to riches with new twists and turns along the way. When writing the script, I knew I wanted to make it different to any version of Cinderella I’d seen or been a WELCOME
Magpie Performers a part of before. Despite being the title character, Cinderella however was not the first character that was worked on in this script, and instead was Dandini. From the beginning, I knew I wanted Dandini to be female. Many things contributed to this, the added humor of the Step-Sisters believing she was the prince, the great banter I felt Dandini and the Prince could have by being a male/female friendship, and maybe just a little bit of self projection of the style of character I’d love to play on stage. From there the story built and grew, Cinderella is a lot more outspoken in this version of the script, fighting back for what she believes is right, and belting out some self-worth ballads along the way. The Prince was a very sweet character to work with, with little knowledge of the world outside his castle, his naivety often leaves him a little clueless to Dandini’s and Cinder’s quick wit. The step-sisters were also great characters to write. With “Mama Said” being in the very first draft of the script, the two had a solid base for their personality and humor and just grew with every adaption. The one thing I could not do alone however was really bring the characters to life, and I couldn’t have asked for a better cast to do that job for me. As you’ll see in today’s show, each actor took their role and made it their own, adding their own wonderful charm to the creations I had made on paper, and truly bringing the stage to life. From cast then came the crew, my truly wonderful backstage team that took so much work off my plate (and saved quite a few hairs being pulled out) in helping bring the physical stage to life. I really must extend a thanks to them for everything they have done for this production. Panto is a great time for the whole family, and a great activity to bring families closer together. It’s one of the few times we can attend a show and really feel involved with the performance, and we hope you feel that way with today’s show. Panto is all about audience participation, so we hope you boo, cheer and sing along with us as we tell Cinderella’s story. Cinderella truly is a wonderful story of self-worth, good conquering evil, and how, if you really try, your dreams can come true. It’s such an honor to be a part of your winter festivities, and I speak for the whole team when I thank you for being our audience today. We hope you enjoy the show, and let’s get to the ball before midnight! Bridie Burn Director www.MagpiePerformers.co.uk
