33 CHS FOOTBALL HISTORY The Catonsville High School Comets Football program has left an indelible mark on the local sports landscape since its inception in 1966. As the program approaches its 57th season in 2023, it's worth reflecting on the coaches, players, and milestones that have shaped its rich history. The inaugural season in 1966 was led by Charles Demands, the program's first-ever Head Coach. Demands would go on to coach the Comets for an impressive 17 seasons, from 1966 to 1982. Over the course of his tenure, Demands guided the team through 153 games, accumulating a 75-76 record. The highlight of his coaching career came in 1973 when the Comets achieved an outstanding 8-1 record. Following Demands, Art Reeves assumed the role of Head Coach from 1983 to 1991. Reeves oversaw 90 games during his tenure and finished with an overall record of 33-57. The team's standout season under Reeves came in 1987, when they achieved an impressive 8-2 record. Notably, Reeves had the privilege of coaching Brian Jozwiak, who went on to become a first-round NFL Draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1992, Warren Como took the reins as Catonsville's third Head Football Coach. Over the course of his 12-year tenure, spanning 1992 to 2003, Como coached the team through 120 games, accumulating a record of 69-51. The program experienced back-to-back successful seasons in 1999 and 2000, both resulting in 8-2 records. Notably, Como had the privilege of coaching two of Catonsville's top athletes: James "Poops" Lewis, a Hall of Fame inductee at CCBC Athletics, and Chris Wilson, who earned Maryland's Gatorade Player of the Year honors and went on to play at Penn State University under legendary coach Joe Paterno. In 2004, Rich Hambor assumed the position of Head Coach, leading the team to historic accomplishments. In his first two seasons, Hambor guided Catonsville to their first-ever playoff appearance in 2004 and secured their first playoff win in 2005. Hambor holds the distinction of being the program's all-time winningest coach, having coached 148 games with a record of 85-63. Since 2018, Jaren Maybin has taken the helm as the program's current Head Coach. Despite his relatively short tenure of coaching 40 games, Maybin has demonstrated the ability to elevate the team's performance. Following a challenging first season with a 1-9 record, Maybin led a resurgent team to the playoffs in 2019 with a 5-4 record. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the 2020 season just as the team was gaining momentum. Maybin replicated the 5-4 record in 2021, culminating in a first-round playoff exit. 36 BRIAN JOZWIAK Upon arriving at West Virginia, Jozwiak underwent a position change, transitioning from a defensive tackle to an offensive lineman. This shift proved to be a stroke of genius, as Jozwiak excelled in his new role. Not only did he pave the way for West Virginia's ball carriers, but he also provided crucial protection for the Mountaineers' quarterback, Jeff Hostetler. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jozwiak was named a consensus All-American in 1985, becoming the sixth Mountaineer to receive such an honor at that time. The Associated Press also recognized his talents, bestowing upon him the title of second-team All-American in 1983. The professional realm beckoned Jozwiak after his successful college career. In the 1986 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs saw great potential in him and selected him as the seventh overall pick in the first round. Jozwiak's presence on the field was immediately felt as he showcased his exceptional skills as an offensive lineman. However, fate dealt him a cruel blow when a career-ending hip injury cut short his time in the NFL. Nevertheless, Jozwiak's impact was undeniable, as he became the highest drafted player ever from Baltimore County Public Schools. His achievement in being selected in the first round remains a testament to his immense talent and dedication to the sport. He joined the exclusive ranks of just two players ever drafted in the 1st Round from Baltimore County Public Schools, the other being Lamar King in the 1999 NFL Draft (Seattle Seahawks). Beyond his football career, Jozwiak has continued to contribute to society. Currently residing in North Port, Florida, he has taken up the role of a HOPE & PE teacher at North Port High School. Jozwiak's passion for physical education and his commitment to guiding the next generation is evident in his teaching role, where he imparts valuable lessons both on and off the field. Brian Joseph Jozwiak, a name that resonates with football enthusiasts, made an indelible mark during his time on the gridiron. Born on June 20, 1963, in Catonsville, Maryland, Jozwiak's passion for the game began at a young age. Starting as a defensive tackle in the Baltimore area, his natural talent and unwavering dedication soon caught the attention of the football community. Jozwiak's stellar performances at Catonsville High School led to him being recognized as an honorable-mention all-metro player. His skills and potential earned him a ticket to West Virginia University, where he would continue his football journey under the tutelage of renowned coach Don Nehlen.
37 PATRICK BRENNAN Catonsville High School's Class of 2019 witnessed the incredible journey of Patrick Brennan, a remarkable individual who embodies perseverance, resilience, and a persistent love for Catonsville Comets Football. Despite facing a bone cancer diagnosis at the age of 5, Patrick's passion for football began early. He would cheer on the Comets and support his older brother Andrew at CHS games. His own battle with cancer involved intense chemotherapy and extensive reconstruction surgeries, resulting in a prosthetic limb. In 2012, Patrick was declared cancer-free, defying the odds and enabling him to walk upright. Although his physical limitations prevented him from playing baseball and football at Catonsville, Patrick's dedication led him to become an invaluable manager for both teams throughout high school. In his senior year, with the support of Coach Maybin, Patrick got the opportunity to suit up and play as the starting quarterback. Against the Perry Hall Gators, he achieved a perfect completion percentage (1 for 1), leaving an indelible mark on the Catonsville community. Beyond high school, Patrick continued his journey, graduating from Ashland University in Ohio. His determination now drives him toward a teaching career, inspiring others with his story of resilience and determination. Patrick Brennan's remarkable journey showcases the power of the human spirit. He is a testament to overcoming obstacles, never losing sight of his dreams, and making a lasting impact on the Catonsville community. His story serves as a reminder that with steadfast determination, anything is possible.

40 TEAM OF THE DECADE During the past decade, the Comets made four trips to the playoffs, including three seasons in a row from 2010-2012 under coach Rich Hambor. Hambor’s 2011 squad went the furthest of any team in Comet history — reaching the state semifinals. Current Catonsville coach Jaren Maybin guided the 2019 Comets to the regional playoffs. A day after the Comets lost their only game of the season in the state semifinals in 2011 the team was honored as special guests at the 18th annual Catonsville Tree Lighting Ceremony on Frederick Road. The Comets won 12 straight before falling 49-20 to Old Mill in the state semis and the dozen victories were the most in school history. Deniko Carter, who caught nine touchdown passes and is the 2nd all-time Comet leader in receiving yards, was amazed at the reception his team received. “I can’t say how proud I am of my team and my coaches and the support of the community,” Carter said.“We made history — first county champions, first regional champions.” In the regional finals, a 30-28 win over Paint Branch, the Comets rallied from a 9-0 first-quarter deficit and 21-17 third quarter deficit. “It was the most exciting game I’ve ever been involved in,” Hambor said. 2011 VARSITY FOOTBALL (12-1) BALTIMORE COUNTY CHAMPIONS 4A NORTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONS BOYS LATIN W 27-6 PERRY HALL W 32-23 WOODLAWN W 35-15 FRANKLIN W 35-7 HEREFORD W 50-10 EASTERN TECH W 39-17 TOWSON W 40-6 MILFORD MILL W 48-7 KENWOOD W 48-0 PARKVILLE W 28-16 PAINT BRANCH W 30-28 POLY W 28-18 OLD MILL L 49-20
41 PLAYERS OF THE DECADE As a junior running back in 2011, Lane rushed for 187 yards on 43 carries and scored three touchdowns in the regional title win over Paint Branch. That season, he rushed for 1,728 yards and 31 touchdowns and was selected to the All-State second team and All-County first team. In his senior year, Lane, who went on to play at the University of Maryland, missed two-and-a-half games with a hamstring injury. He still rushed for 1,046 yards on 161 carries and produced 11 touchdowns, while catching six passes for 100 yards for the 7-4 Comets, who lost in the first round of the playoffs. He left the school as Catonsville’s all-time leading scorer with 230 points. “He’s intense, focused and he likes to have fun like everyone else, but he knows when to turn it on,” Hambor said. DeANDRE LANE (2012) TYLER WEEDON (2010) Weedon concluded his high school career with 499 tackles and three All-Metro and All-State selections. As a sophomore, the linebacker had a season-high 148 tackles. During his senior year he had 106 tackles, one fumble return for a touchdown and made 18 tackles in a regional semifinal game against North Harford. As fullback, the 5-foot-10, 230-pounder who was a two-time Catonsville Times Athlete of the Year, rushed 103 times for 722 yards and 12 touchdowns. “He’s served as a role model for all the kids coming up from the rec program that anything’s possible, no matter what size you are,” Hambor said.
