“May we be in this world a ray of that light which shone forth from LETTER FROM
Bethlehem, bringing joy and peace to the hearts of all men and
women.” ~Pope Francis the PRINCIPAL

Welcome to this issue of The Mighty Pen. I hope this letter finds each say with your whole heart, “God is indeed here.”
of you in good health and good spirits during this beautiful time of ~St. Francis de Sales
the year. The above words from his Holiness Pope Francis serve as a
powerful reminder of our call to be a source of joy and light for all those
with whom we are blessed to interact. While the last twenty months
have certainly challenged us in many ways, we have also been blessed
with countless ways to live in accord with this poignant message from
Pope Francis.
Our school community enthusiastically embraced the start of a
new year that promised, what we all assumed, would be a return to
“normalcy” with all students returning to in-person instruction; however,
it was not too far into this year that we realized that the challenges
associated with the pandemic were not entirely behind us. Life with
mask wearing, quarantines and contact-tracing continue to be a part
of our experience. But in spite of that, the energy and enthusiasm
associated with a traditional school day has returned. It is wonderful
to hear laughter in the halls and to attend Mass, retreats, games,
concerts and dances. In essence, the many traditions that perhaps
we began to take for granted have returned and with them, the holistic
experience that makes a Saint Francis DeSales education so special.
It seems entirely appropriate to me that our school theme for this
year is “Forward with Faith,” and I am rather certain that the lessons
garnered in both the good times and the bad times will empower us to
meet the challenges and opportunities that we will face as we continue
on this year’s journey; furthermore, that the sense of faith, family and
tradition that have prevailed in these initial months of our year will
enable us to meet with success in all that we endeavor to do.
For those of you who may be interested in helping us deliver on our
school’s mission but you have not discovered the best route to do so, I
would encourage you to review the plans associated with our “Be The
Light” Campus Master Plan in this issue of The Mighty Pen. I am sure
after reviewing the details of what we have been blessed to accomplish
coupled with our aspirational plans you will share in my excitement
for the dynamic future of this impactful place. I also encourage you to
review the “Annual Report” that is a part of this publication so that you
can see how your gifts of time, talent and treasure have enabled us
to provide a holistic educational experience for our students. At a time
when schools are experiencing significant cuts in funding, it is mission-
affirming that we can continue to count on the tremendous support of
our benefactors. Please join me in offering a prayer of thanksgiving for
those who have been so generous to our school.
While we are well into the 2020-21 school year, I would be remiss
if I did not express my sincere appreciation to each member of
our community who worked so diligently to make last year such
a tremendous success, in spite of unprecedented challenges. I
would especially like to offer my gratitude to the Class of 2021 who
enthusiastically accepted the challenge to leave our school an even
better place than they found it. In addition, I wish to express my sincere
gratitude to retired teachers Mrs. Donna Kade (Theology) and Mr. Leon
Weisenberger (Science) for enriching the lives of young people through
their love of Christ and commitment to teach as Jesus did during their
wonderful teaching careers.
In closing, as we continue on the journey associated with this year
please know that I look forward to working with each of you as we
embrace the wonderful opportunities that await us. May the joy
associated with Christ’s birth be with you and your family during this
Christmas season and into a happy, healthy, New Year.
Peace and God’s Blessings,
Daniel J. Garrick

Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation

It may have been the coldest commencement day in the history of St. Francis DeSales, but after a year of
COVID restrictions and protocols, nothing was going to stop the Class of 2021 from taking its place as the
58th graduating class. In fact, 2021 was the first time in the history of the school that the Baccalaureate and
Commencement took place outdoors in Alumni Stadium in a joint ceremony that allowed for proper social
distancing in the midst of the pandemic. Fr. Bill Faiella, Class of 1964, celebrated the Mass and the graduates
were led into the stadium by alumni from the classes of 1970 and 1971 (the class of 1970 was invited to
participate since they were not able to join us in 2020). Fr. Faiella joked about his “short” homily delivered in
the wind and the rainy mist of a 42 degree morning. However, his message of love and his joyful demeanor
warmed the hearts of all in attendance. Following the Baccalaureate Mass, commencement activities and
the presentation of diplomas proceeded, including speeches by Valedictorians Mia Slanoc and Kendall Gonya,
as well as closing remarks by Principal Garrick (also the proud father of a 2021 graduate and Valedictorian
Noah). The Class of 2021 had a school record number of Valedictorians—26—and a record number of faculty
members-—9—with graduating seniors, putting an exclamation point on an already historic day.

2021 Celebrations

Our alma mater is one of my favorite traditions, but in our excitement to
pledge anew our loyalty to you DeSales to you, we tend to gloss over the line
“your teachings will light our way.” As we walk, jog, sprint to our new homes,
our new places, we will take with us the teachings of St. Francis de Sales.
To be who we are and be that well. To be a light. A leader. And the joy of
moving forward is that we never lose our past.To quote Gatsby,“So we beat
on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” Or, more

NHS STUDENTS STEP UP TO RESTORE BEAUTY AT A HISTORIC DIOCESAN CHURCH
Written by alumna and past parent Kathi Meacham (formally Halas-Haywood ’84)
St Francis of Assisi Church, founded in 1892, is nestled in the heart of Victorian Village,
in downtown Columbus. Post Covid, the church grounds and gardens needed a major
landscape makeover. The church coordinator called St. Francis DeSales High School to
see if anyone would be willing to help.
The Stallion nation responded immediately! Along with SFA parishioners, 11 National
Honor Society students worked for three hours weeding, planting, mulching and
painting. The results were amazing!
The church grounds have been revitalized, and is once again a place of peace and
beauty. “The students were instrumental in helping us with this major undertaking.
The students were hardworking, respectful and pleasant. We sincerely appreciate their
dedication to giving of their time and effort. They made a significant difference!” - Frank
Conway, St. Francis of Assisi Parishioner

DeSales is an amazing place where those
relationships can blossom.

21st Century Classroom

Students and Classrooms are Tech Ready

W hen the virtual classroom became a new reality in the spring of 2020, we pivoted
from our traditional teaching methods and entered a brave new world of technology.
Fortunately, for students and staff alike, we were equipped with the tools necessary
to productively navigate through the last quarter of the 2020-21 school year without
too much interruption.
Over the past decade, the school has utilized and benefited from the 1:1 iPad
program, providing each student with their own device. In addition, the students are
well-versed in the Google Suite of Apps for Education, including Gmail, Docs, Drive,
and Classroom. Combining the on-hand devices with new classroom technology provided
a smooth transition to the virtual classroom. One piece of classroom technology that
proved to be especially helpful in keeping students engaged when we came back to
school last fall in a hybrid model were the collaborative Clevertouch touchscreens.
During the hybrid learning environment, instruction consisted of teachers simultaneously
communicating with half of their students in the physical classroom while the other half
attended their classes virtually. The Clevertouch allowed teachers to mirror their screens so students at home could
follow along in real time. Most teachers had a primary laptop, and a secondary device to help guide students (and many
of them had three forms of technology assisting in their lessons — including laptops, iPads, Clevertouchs, and desktop
computers!).
As a school we also invested in a new Technology Integration Coach position. Ms. Kelsey Albanese ’12 accepted this
new role and states her main focus is to aid teachers with any and all technology needs. After working closely with
teachers during this shift in instructional delivery, Kelsey noted, “The teachers handled the adjustments wonderfully,
and shared ideas with one another on what worked well, and what didn’t.” She also mentioned that teachers were
prompted to find apps that made virtual teaching engaging, to help bring the virtual students into the physical
classroom. These apps helped reach and communicate with students when they were not physically present.
Thankfully, we welcomed back all students for in-person learning at the start of 4th quarter last spring, but we
did realize that some of the technological integrations teachers made to their curriculum for virtual learning were
great tools to continue to use moving forward. It is with great pride that we are able to state that SFDHS is definitely
embracing the 21st century classroom to benefit our current and future Stallions.

Making An Impact HVAC Phase I

As a part of our Be The Light Campus Master
Plan, the work to support the mission of St.
Francis DeSales High School continues with
two great updates that bring daily benefits
to our students’ well-being and learning
environment.
Over the summer, a new HVAC system was
installed in 80% of our classrooms. This
dynamic system allows each room to be
individually controlled, letting teachers
choose the best temperature for the space.
Adjacent rooms can be heated and cooled
simultaneously with innovative VRV technology
from Daikin. This was a significant upgrade to
our aging substructure.

Why Pavers?

If you’ve driven around Columbus, you’ve
probably seen small ponds being dug next
to new buildings that are being constructed.
These ponds, or underground reservoirs like
them, serve to retain stormwater runoff before
it reaches the storm sewers throughout the
city. This step helps mitigate the rush of water
entering the system and prevents overloading it.
A pervious paver system also softens the flow
of rainwater by filtering it through thousands of
tons of limestone and slowly introducing it into
the storm sewer. Stallion Way will allow water to
drain down through instead of running off. Also,
if a more traditional paving method was chosen
for this project, like asphalt, the underground
reservoirs needed for that system would have
been more expensive than the gorgeous pavers!

Stallion Way was made possible by the generosity
of so many, including 1966 DeSales alumnus
Mike DeAscentis, Sr. Mike was the driving force
behind the engineering and execution of this
dynamic change in our students’ daily commute.
He dedicated countless hours of his personal time
to help our vision become a reality — making the
needed introductions with the engineering firm

Lifestyle Communities.

After years of discussing this project, Mike made
it happen for our students! As a student driver

days as a Stallion as well.

Lasting Legacy

Lance Corporal Ryan E. Miller, SFD class of 2003, was killed in action serving in Kilo
Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Division in Anbar Province, Iraq on September 3,
2006. That day, Lance Corporal Miller volunteered to drive a humvee carrying supplies
to support his fellow Marines. His humvee was hit by an IED on the route, killing him
and his gunner instantly. Upon enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in December
2003, Ryan told his parents that “he thought he would come out of it a stronger, better
person with lifelong friendships.'' As Ryan told his father, Ed: “There's nothing negative
here, Dad.This is all good.'' Ryan was serving his second tour in Iraq in September
2006. He also served in Africa. Joseph Rivera, a fellow marine who had served with
Ryan, wrote the following message to Ryan's family on an Internet tribute website:
I'm very sorry for your loss. I knew Ryan shortly after he got to the 3-2.
I stood a lot of posts with him. He was a good Marine and an even better
friend. He was one of the best guys I've ever had the privilege of serving with.
He will be missed--but never forgotten.
Lance Corporal Miller grew up in Gahanna, attending St. Matthew the Apostle School before St. Francis DeSales High School.
His parents, Ed and Mary (Blubaugh) Miller, SFD ’76 and sister Tara Martinez, SFD ’05 created the LCpl Ryan E. Miller
Scholarship at DeSales to continue his legacy of selfless commitment to others. Ryan valued his education and planned on
entering college to be a police officer after his four years in the Marines. The first year after Ryan’s death, the support for
the scholarship was overwhelming from family, friends and the community. Since its inception, the scholarship has provided
two $4,000 scholarships for incoming first year SFD students, one boy and one girl, from feeder parishes. To further fund
the scholarship the LCpl Ryan E. Miller Memorial Golf Scramble was created. The first Memorial Scramble, started by Ed’s
brother Bob and sister-in-law Chris, took place in September 2007. The 15th LCpl Ryan E Miller Memorial Golf Scramble
took place on September 18, 2021, 16 years, 2 weeks and 1 day after Ryan’s sacrifice. This year marked the final golf scramble
as the scholarship has been fully endowed. To date, the scholarship has been awarded to 30 SFD students, offering $120,000 of
support to those families, and will continue to bring Ryan’s legacy to endless generations of future Stallions.
The 15 years of golf has not only helped fund Ryan’s scholarship, but has provided the opportunity for the Marines who served
with Ryan to reunite, share stories, and also heal. They each have adopted the Miller family into their own families, and the
Millers have adopted these Marines into their family. For the past 15 years, these amazing men who come to Columbus from
all over the country always make a visit to Ryan’s gravesite at Resurrection Cemetery on their way to the golf course. The SFD
scholarship recipients and their parents have also been invited to the dinner following the outing where they hear Ryan’s Marine
brothers speak about honor and commitment — another way Ryan’s legacy lives on.

The Miller family would like to thank everyone for their support, love, and prayers throughout
these past 15 years, especially Van and Terri (Blubaugh ’71) Ambrose and Mike and Judi (Blubaugh
’80) Lisi. The support of Ryan’s Marines, family members, friends and the DeSales community has
been invaluable.

Ryan’s words proved to be prophetic...“lifelong friendships” indeed.
His legacy and sacrifice have brought those he loved together to
create opportunities for countless individuals in the St. Francis
DeSales family for generations to come.

Living Our Pillars

Faith, Family, Tradition. Our students and families live out these three words each and every day at St.

Francis DeSales High School. Our tradition of excellence is rooted in the legacy of those in our extended community
who have invested in the mission of our school. Matt Beecroft ’88 and his wife Keli, ’88, have a unique connection
to the values of DeSales in sending three children to DeSales: Connor ’16, Kathryn ’18, and Jack ’20.
As a parent and an alumnus, Matt served on a committee to
develop our Be The Light Campus Master Plan and further
committed to help DeSales navigate the engineering and
execution of new HVAC systems for our classrooms (see
page 12). He cites former SFDHS Principal Pat Rosetti
for encouraging him to get involved years ago. After his
undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio
State where, as he puts it, he was an average student who
just likes to work hard, Matt extended his formative education
by learning the industry in his first fourteen years at Trane.
Onward, Matt partnered to found ElitAire, now a 75 person
HVAC supply and service firm.
After her undergraduate studies, Keli worked as a legal
secretary at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease until having their
second child when she and Matt decided she could focus more
on the needs their family had at home. Now, with three kids in
their own careers or in college, she stays busy by giving back. “I volunteer at our church, St. John Neumann, and I
am very active in a non-profit called Mommies Matter which supports single mothers through childbirth and after
their child is born. I organize baby clothing given to the moms, and am an ally for a few moms. My biggest job is as
a special events co-leader, in which I plan every event that Mommies Matter has.”
Matt and Keli also shared a few insights on growing up and how that has gotten them to where they are today.
On the element of Faith while growing up:
Matt - “I started at St. Paul in second grade. My parents were huge proponents of Catholic education, even though
they really couldn’t afford it.”
Keli - “I went St. James then on to DeSales. No other family members of mine went to DeSales, but my parents felt
I would get a better education being in a private school.”
On Family and how they got to this point:
“DeSales of course! We started dating our junior year. We’ll always be thankful to Jeanne Janya for helping us start
our journey together. We always expected our children would attend DeSales, and our kids always expected they
would as well! It was rewarding watching them work hard, learn about life and how to build friendships.”
On Tradition and shared SFD experiences
“When our oldest Connor was in eighth grade he asked, ‘What’s so great about DeSales?’ It was a pretty easy,
spontaneous answer — It’s the faculty, staff and other parents that all really care about your success growing as a
person. We saw this throughout our children’s DeSales experience.”

’99, Joe Gordon ’71, Steve Hallam ’78, and Jennifer Ogbuehi ’03. Although
their induction was delayed a year, we are so proud that these Stallions took

REMINISCING: THE BOYS CLUB BOWLING TEAM

As we begin another Winter Sports season, we take a look back at one of our
Varsity sports, and how it came to be. It wasn’t too long ago that student-athletes
in our Boys Bowling program started in non-varsity club bowling teams. These
teams, from 2001-2003, helped establish the baseline for the current program 20
years ago. In late 2000, OHSAA and local bowling proprietors were encouraging
local high schools to field teams toward establishing a varsity program; the
objective was to have another varsity program for kids to participate in. DeSales
signed up.

The 2001 DeSales boys club team won the inaugural conference and district
titles on its way to the first state tournament. Yet, it didn’t finish in a top spot as
the team’s top bowler broke his ankle in the month before the tournament. In
2002, the team did well in conference, but was only able to send one individual to
state, Pat Snyder ’03. Pat, the team captain, MVP and a stand-out bowler at state,
finished as the top non-team attached singles series scorer. In 2003, the team
was 2nd at conference and went on to state but did not place.

Fast-forward to the 2019-2020 season when the SFD Varsity Boys Bowling team
won the Central Catholic League Championship, Division I District Championship,
and finished 14th in the State Tournament.

We send a special thanks to those young men on the
first boys club bowling teams for providing a sound
foundation and inspiration for our current bowlers…
and those yet to come.

Alumni Legacy Scholarship

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship was created as a way to recognize the commitment our Alumni make to their
alma mater when choosing to send their child(ren) to DeSales. Each new school year Alumni Legacy Scholarships
($1,000 each) are open to incoming freshmen whose parents or grandparents attended St. Francis DeSales
High School. The recipients are selected for their active role in church, school, and co-curricular activities. It is
our hope to endow all donations made to the Alumni Legacy Fund to increase the number of recipients of this
scholarship, with the ultimate goal of providing each student of an alumnus/a a scholarship to attend St. Francis
DeSales High School. The Alumni Legacy Fund continues to grow due to the great efforts of our Alumni Board and
Council and the generous support of our Alumni community.
Below we introduce to you the 2021 Alumni Legacy Scholarship winners. We look forward to watching the legacy
of our Stallion tradition carried on for years to come.

faith family“The impact of DeSales has been enormous on our children.
As past and current parents we have seen a DeSales Catholic
Education enable growth in mind, spirit and body; creating a
foundation for success in a passion-driven life with unlimited
possibilities. We are supporting St. Francis DeSales with a
beneficiary designation in a retirement account to support
future students and faculty. We want to honor those that
have made DeSales a place of Faith, Family andTradition by
supporting the next generation of Stallions.”
~Anonymous Parents, Classes of ’15, ’17, ’19 and ’24
“Lessons learned while a student at DeSales have been
invaluable assets during my career path. When making
decisions on how I could provide that same support for
future students, I knew the Planned Giving program would
allow me to not only “pay forward,” but also focus on the
issues which I felt were critical to the achievements of

traditionfuture students.”
~Carol A.Ventresca, Ph.D., Class of 1972

32 THE MIGHTY PEN

In 2021, our alumni, current parents and parents of alumni came up big for our teams and clubs. The inaugural
Stallion WishBook, held March 1st to 14th, was a tremendous success! In just two weeks, over 400 gestures of
kindness were offered to support our co-curricular programs.
Below are some of the awesome achievements which will benefit our students:
• 22 programs received donation support totaling over $40,000.
• 17 of our club programs received donation support.
• The SFD Marching Band fully funded the purchase of new rain coats to replace tired coats they wore for

almost twenty years.
• The SFD Football program funded the purchase of new equipment, including pop-up blocking and tackling

dummies.
• Girls Lacrosse received funding support from 31 individuals.
• Boys Lacrosse funded new shooting shirts.
• Boys Soccer funded four different uniform projects.
• Girls Soccer funded all of their requests, including equipment and new game shelters.
• Softball received generous support and new infield tarps.
Our 2022 Wishbook is right around the corner. In February, we’ll share the new wishes our programs have for a
