Presidents Message

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Gilpin County Arts
Association’s 73nd Annual Juried Show! It has been my challenge and
honor to lead Gilpin County Arts Association into the near future and to
continue a 73 year tradition of bringing the fine arts to Central City. The
incredible amount of skill, talent and craftsmanship exhibited by the artists
in this year’s show is second to none. As you browse the galleries do take in
the beautiful art before you, but also absorb the historic nature of the space
that surrounds the art and you will see a combination of interior space
and fine art like no other. This space as much as the art, the artists and our
membership is why myself and my fellow board members feel an inherent
importance to continue to perpetuate what those before have left for us to
continue. It is more than arts association, more than an art gallery, it is more
than a community, it’s a legacy.
The body of work before you as selected by our esteemed jurors shows a
variety of form of subject matter, mediums and approaches that reflect the
art of today but also captures the classic sense of the mastery of each artist.
As in every year past, we are so impressed with this year’s submissions
as they not only give us an opportunity to view new art but gives us the
opportunity to build a relationship with the artists as well, our goal as an
association.
Many thanks go out to so many of our volunteers, our staff and the City of
Central for their efforts in continuing the ongoing mission of the GCAA.
I would be remiss to not give a personal thank you to each of our board
members, past and present for all their efforts in preparing for this year’s
show; it has been a pleasure to work beside you!

Kindest Regards,
Eric Miller
GCAA President

Judge’s Statement

I will share the criteria I use for judging any art exhibition without reference
to individual pieces in this show since I am writing this prior to judging due
to the printing deadline. When judging an exhibit for awards I look for
pieces that have the “wow” factor. That is something that stops me in my
tracks to spend time with the piece, whether it is a photograph, a piece of
pottery or jewelry or a painting or sculpture. I like to be surprised by
something: unusual subjects or perspective or color choices or texture.
Does the artist demonstrate a distinctive style or voice? Does the piece
work well close up and from a distance? A strong composition is very
important. I also take into consideration the mastery of the chosen media. I
have a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Art Education and I have
studied all media represented in the show so I am familiar with the
technical challenges faced by all of the artists.

One of my first jobs in Colorado in 1979 was working in the Washington
Hall Gallery for Gilpin County Arts Association. Over the years I began to
submit my own work to the show and was accepted many years and have
won numerous awards. It feels like coming full circle to be the judge this
year and I am honored to serve as the 2020 Judge of Awards.

Natasha Isenhour www.natashaisenhour.com captures her emotional response
to the landscape with a contemporary expressionistic style in both oil and pastel. While from
a distance a first impression is the realistic feeling of the work, but a closer look reveals a
contemporary edge where her mark-making controls the impressions of mass and delicacy.
Participating in numerous plein air events throughout the year informs her studio work
through the on-site study of value and color temperature as it can only be seen with the eye.
Observation and her degree in Geology afford her a deep understanding of the landforms
and the bones of the earth that allow her to so effectively convey the depth and mass of her
subjects. You will find her work hauntingly unpopulated as she tries to convey the emotion of
place while leaving you alone in your thoughts.
In 2019, Isenhour was awarded Best Pastel in the April/May Plein Air Salon, Best in Show at
the Central City Plein Air Festival by judge Bruce Gomez, and awarded the Holbein Award by
Lyn Asselta in the Pastel Society of Southern California’s Make Your Mark International Online
Exhibition. This year she is exhibiting in the Cowgirl Up! Invitational and in 2021 is Featured
Pastelist for Mendocino Open Plein Air.
Natasha Isenhour is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Distinguished
Pastelist of the Pastel Society of New Mexico, Signature Member and President of Plein Air
Painters of New Mexico and Associate Member with Distinction of American Women Artists.

Rob Lantz www.roblantzphoto.com is the owner and curator of R Gallery, a fine art
gallery in downtown Boulder devoted to showcasing Colorado artists of all styles and
medium. He is an artist himself creating hyper-real photographic images of nature. His work
is not as much about capturing a realistic image as it is about echoing the sensations nature
evokes. From the majestic peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the coral reefs of the Caribbean
Sea, he likes to venture to the extremes to find inspiration. Rob says,“I love creating images
that tell the story of the incredible places.”

Ira Sherman www.irasherman.com has been exploring the boundaries of metal
fabrication and design since the early1970s, both as a highly successful custom goldsmith
and jeweler, and as an internationally recognized sculptor. His sculptural work uses materials
and shapes from science and technology, yet“bio-engineered”to interact with the audience
or viewer in a uniquely human way. Many of Sherman’s pieces are, in fact,“prostheses”
created around a humorous social concept. These are worn on the body, and may be shock-
ingly intimate. Many of Sherman’s sculptures have sensors that let them interact with the
participant or the audience. Parts of his current traveling exhibitions,“Panaceas to Persistent
Problems”and“Impenetrable Devices”have been displayed in exhibitions in the U.S., Canada,
Europe, Israel and Japan; the Spertus Museum, the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery of the
National Museum of American Art , the Regional Transportation District of Denver Public Art
Collection and the National Ornamental Metal Museum have acquired Sherman art works for
their permanent collections.
Sherman is a founding Chairperson of the Colorado Metalsmithing Association, and is a 25
year member of Society of North American Goldsmiths. He has helped developed programs
for non-profit art organizations as well as religious, educational and community
organizations.

2020 GCAA show Comments from the Awards Judge, Virginia Unseld

Best of Show EVAJ 103 James Evanson for Indian Head Pony 3D sculpture. I immediately fell in
love with all three entries by this artist. He is able to capture the spirit of the horse while playing with an
interesting narrative. The piece changes with the light, casting beautiful shadows. This works on so many
levels: a unique style and process, exquisite craftsmanship and presentation, a personal voice that has
much to show and say.
First Place 2D WELB 101 Betsy Johnson-Welty for Paris en Blue- Notre Dame. A painting should
work from a distance and draw you closer. When you get closer you still need to be entertained and
captivated. This painting does both extremely well. A strong composition, subtle color and value changes,
a captivating storyline and mastery of the media.
First Place Photo JANJ101 Jeremy Janus for Explosion in the Ocean. Talk about being in the right
place at the right time! Although I would guess there were many attempts to capture this wave at just the
moment when it explodes while still allowing the background and foreground to frame it in rich colors and
textures. You can hear this photograph.
First Place 3D LOVM 101 Melissa Lovingood for Slate Brooch, Jewelry. This wearable sculpture
focuses on strong contrasts of polished versus rough, organic versus manmade, dark versus light, metal
versus rock. A simple yet powerful design.
Second Place 2D AVRW 101 Walter Avramenko for Tenmile Range Sunset. This would be a lovely
photograph but this block print captures the photographic quality of the scene while rendered in the
painstaking process of block printing. The composition and color choices are dramatic and the color
registration is perfect.
Second Place Photo GESL 101 Lars Gesing for Family Bonds. What you don’t say visually is as
important as what you do say. If this was cropped tight, it would lose the sense of isolation and silence.
We can feel the snow storm and that quiet space is critical to the piece.
Second Place 3D BLUR 101 Randy Blunt for Diamond and Small Knots. This functional table is
perfectly proportioned with great attention to detail. This artist and craftsman has designed this piece to
highlight the painting in wood created by pine beetles. It is a lovely ode to symmetry.
Third Place 2D ROBS 101 Scott Roberts for After the Kids are Gone. This artist says much with a very
limited color palette. The contrast of textures and layers is pleasing to the eye while suggesting that there
is more here than meets the eye.
Third Place Photo CONA 101 Amanda Constant for Moonscape Sunrise. This photograph succeeds
as a realistic landscape but also as an abstract piece. The ambiguity of space is fun to explore.
Third Place 3D COOC 102 Carol Cooper Once Upon A Time, mixed media. This is an interactive
piece that invites the viewer to participate. With lots of media and symbolism, this is a playful and funky
assemblage.
Honorable Mention 2D BURA102 Andi Burnum for Two Ton Dance. This collage depicts two animals
rendered in a realistic style by assembling hundreds of scraps of colored paper to create the illusion of a
painting.
Honorable Mention Photo 1DAND 101 Darcy Dangremond for Into the Mist. This is a simple visual
haiku Simple, uncluttered, perfect.
Honorable Mention 3D VOLP 102 Pen Volkmann for Boulder Panorama, sculpture. This bas relief
is reminiscent of a Chinese ink painting rendered in bronze. The craggy mountains dwarf the manmade
structures and suggest a large area in a relatively small space.
