Alisnar Y. Guerra Polanco.

University ID 1-20-8521
I am studying Medicine, as my second major.
(For the moment, I am studying the basic core
subjects from Psychology at Puerto Plata).

My Biography: Well I am 22 years old, I was born in
Puerto Plata. I grew up in the small town of Maimón,
Puerto Plata. I have a brother his name is Adrian, and he
lives with my mother; and I have a step sister, she lives
with my father. I did the English Immersion program from MESCyT , when I was 17
years old. I am about to finish my first career in Modern Languages at OyM, Puerto
Plata, I am only missing 2 subjects and it´s finished. I also started in January 2020,
Medicine. So this is why I said, that I am studying the basic core subjects from
Psychology at UTESA in Puerto Plata. I also start working 3 days before the
Coronavirus started spreading, so I hope that soon I will be able to return to my job,
for course this is in Sosua-Cabarete. I have been married for almost 3 years and a
half. No kids are programed, because as soon as I finish my basic core subjects in
Puerto Plata, my husband and I will be moving to Santiago, so I can finish this
magnificent career. I plan on returning to Puerto Plata in 2021 to graduate from
Modern Languages, only to graduate… not moving back.

My Future Plans: Finish the first 6 years on medicine, take some side courses
related to my career. Maybe find a nice job, also related to my profession. By this
time, I hope to have bought a house or a small apartment and a nice car.

Likes: I love Musical Videos, I like to read and play board games. I love
traveling. I have done some trips inside the Dominican Republic, but I hope that soon
I will start traveling aboard.

Sports: I honestly don’t like to practice sports, I do sometimes like to watch
them. If I had to choose probably I would same, watching the Olympics is something
I enjoy and definitely not something I would do alone. (But I do have to watch
baseball games, when I am visiting my dad).

My favorite Food: Wow, probably Mexican food, and Japanese food are my
favorite, even though I enjoy a lot oriental dishes, (Chinese, Thai, etc.). I simply love
the chicken flavor and even though beef is ok. I am not a big vegetable lover, but its
ok for me if they are steamed, (oriental way). It’s the way they season their dishes
that I simply love and above all, they are extremely healthy. Oh, by the way, eating
with chopsticks is something really unique.

My favorite Places: I am planning on visiting Mexico soon, the north and south
with my husband. I would love to visit Egypt, China, and some parts of Europe.
Japan is definitely on my wish list.

modern language degree cover?

5

Modern Languages:
Is a program that will require students to study

courses from the past and present cultures. It also
requires the study of literary texts, film and media, as
well as learning about the historical and political
contexts of a certain region. In this career, students
will certainly need to demonstrate a strong interest in
other languages and cultures.
Now it’s possible to study modern languages either as a single honors degree
or alongside another subject as a joint honors degree. Common joint honors choices
often remain within the humanities, including subjects such as politics, history and
literature, but modern languages can also be combined with subjects such as
chemistry or mathematics. Another option is to study two languages, such as French
and Italian.

One of the main attractions of a modern language degree is the opportunity to
spend either a semester or a year abroad in a country where the language of study is
widely spoken. The purpose is to increase proficiency in the language of study, while
also allowing to immerse in another culture and meet the challenge of communicating
with a broad range of people. For this reason, many modern language programs are
four years in length, with one year (often the third year) spent in a partnered
institution abroad, either working or studying.

“He who knows no foreign languages knows nothing of his own.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Medicine:
There are a lot of reasons why people choose to study

a Medicine degree, ranging from personal calling to
calculated financial gain. Now something we should forget
is that studying Medicine abroad is a long-term
commitment and a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Before deciding to study this career, I did some
research on why people choose to study and work in Medicine:

Probably the first and most important one is, you'll have diverse Medical career
opportunities. After graduation, you have a broad range of opportunities for a future
job in the field of Medicine. There are over 60 different specialties you can choose
from, so you’re spoiled in choices.

A second reason is probably that, you can choose to work in hospitals or other
healthcare facilities, research labs, or be part of the medical department in other
professional fields. There are Medicine graduates who manage health care costs in
economic sectors or contribute to the legal work intended to verify medical errors
and defend patients' rights. According to many people it all starts with choosing the
right study path, including degree options…

These could be: Public Health degrees, Biomedicine degrees, Dentistry degrees,
Physiotherapy degrees, Pharmacy degrees, Nursing degrees, Veterinary degrees or
Health Management degrees to just name a few.

Now, I am not worried if I don’t see myself as a future pediatrician, surgeon or
therapist. As a Medical student, I have six years to decide what I am interested in!

Pros and cons of my two careers:

Modern Languages: (Languages)
The Disadvantages of Learning a Foreign Language

Cost

Con: Learning a foreign language can be expensive, especially if you take
college courses or pay for private tutoring.

Pro: It's possible to learn a foreign language from books or computer programs,
which often cost less, but practicing speaking with others usually makes learning
more fun and effective.

Difficulty

Con: Learning a foreign language is challenging. Many languages have
different systems of grammar, and some languages use a completely different
alphabet and different sounds. And learning thousands of new vocabulary words isn't
easy, either.

Opportunity Cost

Con: The opportunity cost of studying a foreign language is the value of what
you could do instead. Studying a foreign language requires a significant investment
of your time, effort and money. You could do something else with those resources,
such as spend time with your family, improve your math skills, increase your reading
speed, study for the SAT, plant a garden, exercise or learn a hobby, such as knitting.

Usefulness

Pro: Knowing a foreign language isn't useful to some people. For example, if
you can't afford to travel or aren't interested in visiting other countries, you might
never get to speak the language with natives.

Con: In addition, although speaking a foreign language makes traveling more
fun, it's easy to get around in many countries while speaking English. Knowing a
foreign language is a prized asset in some careers, but it's not helpful for many jobs.

Pros and cons of studying medicine:

Pros:
1. It has diverse career opportunities for graduates: Medicine offers a variety of
career opportunities especially in biological sciences.
2. It gives the ability to help people directly and make them happier: Medicine gives
graduates an opportunity to help strangers and make them happier than they were
initially.
3. Medicine is a globally recognized field and therefore graduates have the
opportunity to work in various countries across the world without any problem.
4. There will always be a great need for good doctors:
5. Studying Medicine gives a stable job and a safe career:
6. It gives status and respect in society.

Cons:
1. The income associated with some careers in medicine is not as much as some
people imagine.

3. Job related stress: Doctors and other medical practitioners are at risk of contracting
job related stress.

4. Possible lawsuits: In cases where there is perceived medical negligence, it is the
doctors who are usually at risk of being sued for possible damages

5. Long years of schooling: Doctors and other medical practitioners spend so many
years in school before they can graduate and become doctors.

Puerto Plata… A ride with the Puerto Plata cable car!

Location and opening hours of the cable car:
Puerto Plata cable car is

located in the southwest of the
city. It is situated in Las Flores
district, in a side street of
Avenida Manolo Tavárez Justo.

The road towards Santiago
de los Caballeros runs very close
by. It is recommended to take a
taxi or a Motoconcho.

The top station is located on the 800m high Monte Isabel de Torres. The cable
car can be used daily. The first ascent takes place at 8:30 am. The service ends at
17:00 o’clock, where guests should start their descent at 16:45 o’clock at the latest.
The journey time is about 10 minutes. Recommended visits are suggested, as clouds
can spoil the view from midday onwards.
History of the cable car:

In 1970, the statue of Christ was erected on Monte Isabel de Torres. The aim
was to promote tourism in this region.

11

In 1971, a road was built from El Cupey to the summit. On this road all machines and
installations needed for the long planned cable car should simply reach their
destination, in case there is a need for a building.

The construction of a cable car was decided in 1972.

In 1972 the government of the Dominican Republic decided to build a ropeway. After
the contract was concluded with an Italian company for the delivery of the parts for
the cable car, construction work could begin. A lift was built with two cabins, each
guided by three ropes. Furthermore, a mountain station, a valley station and a support
were erected.

The construction work was already completed at the end of 1974. A trial run
over 6 months followed before the attraction could be opened to the public.

Official opening date was on 19 July 1975.

the Dominican Republic!!

The 27 waterfalls (27 Charcos de Damajagua) are the pinnacle of natural beauty

done from the cruise ships. You

thoroughly about the falls. Once you reach the top, you can slide or jump down the
waterfalls if you aren’t too afraid of heights.

Dirtiest Beach Number 4 in the world… Haina, Dominican Republic

The city of Haina is known to be one of the most polluted in the world, earning
itself the nickname “The Dominican Chernobyl.”

Its number one problem is lead poisoning — the community is located near a
former lead-acid battery recycling smelter, and the lead has poisoned some 90 percent
of the city’s inhabitants. But that’s not all. Industrial waste is dumped into rivers that
lead to the sea, making the beaches in Haina essentially un-swimmable. There’s also
the tons of garbage that litters the beaches, thanks in part due to the open-air dump
nearby.

THE BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE RECIPE EVER
In 3 East Steps…

Like I said, these cookies are crazy easy, however here are a few notes!

First: Soften butter. If you are planning on
making these, take the butter out of the fridge
first thing in the morning so it’s ready to go
when you need it!

Then: Measure the flour correctly. Be sure to
use a measuring cup made for dry ingredients

(Not a pyrex liquid measuring cup).

Notes: There has been some controversy on how to
measure flour! I personally use the scoop and shake
method and always have (gasp)! It’s easier and I have
never had that method fail me! Many of you say
that the only way to measure flour is to scoop it into
the measuring cup and level with a knife. I say, measure it the way you always do.
Just make sure that the dough matches the consistency of the dough in the photos in
this post.
Then: Use LOTS of chocolate chips. Do I really need to explain this?!

Last: DO NOT over-bake these chocolate chip cookies!
