BECOMING A WALTON PRIORY PUPIL
At Walton Priory we know your child. The majority of our
pupils transfer from local first schools, with whom we enjoy
positive working relationships. Both our Transition Coordinator
and our SENDCO (special educational needs and disabilities
coordinator) visit first schools during the summer term to learn
all they can about pupils joining in September.
Year Five class teachers have detailed information on their new
pupils long before the pupils actually start with us.
We place a high value on ensuring the needs of ‘more able’
pupils are met and for this reason it is the Deputy Headteacher
who coordinates such provision. This enables us to plan an
effective curriculum that ensures all children make progress
from day one.
The Key Stage Two class teachers are all primary specialists who
teach their class for the majority of the week. As children grow
up and move through the school, they are taught by a wider
range of specialist teachers, preparing them for high school life
by the time they reach the end of Year Eight.
Year 5 have their own
playground and activity
equipment, although they can
move to the larger playground
later in the school year as they
become more confident in
their surroundings.
THE CURRICULUM
Children at Walton Priory follow the statutory National
Curriculum set out in 2014. This is enhanced by bespoke
opportunities in certain year groups.
YEAR 5
In Year Five pupils experience STEM (science, technology,
engineering and maths) projects days such as ‘The Space Rocket
Challenge’. In school learning is supplemented by visits to
extend and apply their knowledge. All children in Year Five have
swimming lessons for a minimum of eighteen weeks.
YEAR 6 Our Accelerated Reader
Year Six pupils enjoy a residential visit to an outdoor education programme ensures that our
centre to complement their studies. They also swim for eighteen children are reading at the
weeks. correct level
YEAR 7
Year Seven pupils enjoy an extra maths lesson every week. They
experience a residential visit to North Wales as well as
participating in the national Business and Enterprise Challenge.
YEAR 8
Year Eight pupils enjoy an ‘Options Afternoon’ each Friday
where they select from a menu of six-week programmes
focusing on sports, technology or business and enterprise.
This prepares them for the process of taking their Year Nine
options once they leave.
We have invested significantly in
a number of teaching assistants
so that children with special
educational needs are supported
particularly well within the
school; as too are our most able
students, who are provided with
more challenging extension tasks
and opportunities such as the
UK Maths team challenge at
Keele University.
