The U.S. Department of Energy Solar
Decathlon is a collegiate competition
made up of 10 different contests challeng-
ing student teams to design and build full-
size, solar powered houses. The contests
are both juried and measured, and range
from architecture and engineering to
energy efficiency and innovation.

In 2017, the team from Northwestern
University has partnered with Marvin
Design Gallery by Evanston Lumber in
Illinois to combine design excellence and
modern construction practices with smart
energy, resulting in a sustainable home
that will be well-adapted for the extreme
seasons of the Midwestern climate.

When completed, House by Northwest-
ern will be 90% more energy efficient
than the average home in Evanston.
