INSIDE LOOK: 2017 MARVIN ARCHITECTS CHALLENGE WINNERS

BEST IN SHOW

Shorefront Camp Trenton, ME
Architect: William M. Hanley, AIA &
Heli T Mesiniemi Firm: WMH Architects
Products Used: Contemporary Door, Direct Glaze
Window, Ultimate Awning, Ultimate Casement
The complete renovation and addition to an original 1962
Maine modern shorefront camp paid special attention
to the authenticity of the home blending seamlessly with
the vision of the original architect. The family has deep
sentimental ties to the home. Therefore, every inch of the
house was reconditioned maintaining the character and
extending the use of the camp for four season use.

BEST CONTEMPORARY

Compact Living Minneapolis, MN
Architect: Christopher Strom Firm: Christopher Strom Architects
Products Used: Ultimate Awning Window, Ultimate Sliding French Door
New zoning codes paved the way for building an Accessory Dwelling Unit in this
home’s Minneapolis location. This new unit allows for independent multi-gener-
ational housing within close proximity to a primary residence and serves visiting
family, friends, and an occasional Airbnb renter. The strategic use of glass, partitions,
and vaulted ceilings create an open and airy interior while keeping the square
footage below 400 square feet. Vertical siding and awning windows create a fresh,
yet complementary addition.

BEST TRANSITIONAL

Knoll House Ferrisburgh, Vermont
Architect: Elizabeth Herrmann Firm: Elizabeth Herrmann
Architecture + Design
Products Used: Sliding Patio door, Tilt Turn Window, Ultimate
Awning Window, Ultimate Casement Window, Ultimate
Swinging French Door
The homeowners had spent years under the guidance of a
landscape architect selectively editing and revealing the natural
features of the property, so that when the conversation about
the architecture started, the homeowners were well attuned to
the site. Exterior materials and large windows and doors were
chosen to merge the house with the natural environment.

4 CROSS GRAIN – June 2017

BEST TRADITIONAL NEW
CONSTRUCTION

Little Camp Coastal New England, MA
Architect: Jacob Albert Firm: Albert, Righter, Tittmann Architects
Products Used: Ultimate Awning Window, Ultimate Double Hung
Window, Ultimate Swinging French Door
Little Camp’s site is next to an old, slightly ramshackle “camp” that clients had
rented and loved for years. When they had a chance to build for themselves
on the adjacent site, they wanted to capture some of the spirit of the old
camp. So, the new house has exposed rafter tails, an entirely wood interior,
and tree trunk porch posts. Marvin was chosen for its ability to withstand the
rigors of a coastal environment and complement the “flavors of the house.”

BEST REMODEL/ADDITION

Westborough Town Hall Westborough, MA
Architect: Brian Humes Firm: Jacunski Humes Architects
Products Used: Ultimate Awning Window, Ultimate Double Hung Magnum
Window, Polygon Window
Originally constructed in 1928, the Westborough Town Hall was in disrepair
and becoming a burden on the community until it was renovated in 2016. The
municipality authorized a major renovation to address the aging conditions and
bring new life to the downtown landmark. Prior to the renovation the building was
inefficient, underutilized, and inaccessible. Now, the historic building boasts one
hundred percent accessibility and new maintenance free clad-wood windows
from Marvin that duplicate the originals still in the building.

BEST IN COMMERCIAL

McClellan Ranch Preserve Environmental Education Center Cupertino, CA
Architect: Henry Siegel Firm: Siegel & Strain Architects
Products Used: Bi-Fold Door, Commercial Door, Tilt Turn Window, Ultimate Awning
Window, Ultimate Casement Window, Ultimate Double Hung Window, Bird-safe Glass
The McClellan Ranch Preserve is located on a ranch dating back to the 1870s that has
become a park hosting the City of Cupertino’s environmental education programs.
The new Education Center houses classrooms, exhibits, a library and offices designed
to work in concert with the sites historic buildings to shape an outdoor activity for
large groups. The building connects directly with the farm setting and careful attention
was paid to the unique location and presence of birds living on the preserve. Marvin
partnered with Siegel & Strain Architects to specify patterned bird-safe glass for the
windows to prevent collision.
