Thailand explodes with the boundless energy and self-confidence of its people.
Founded in India, Buddhism first came to Thailand in 3BC, and thrived as the
religion of kings and as a unifier of the people. Shrines, Buddha replicas and tem-
ples are found in abundance in every city and village. The Buddhist philosophy
permeates all facets of national life. Wherever you go, you will see monks with
orange robes and shaven heads strolling the streets. Visit a temple and you may
even witness an ordination ceremony when saffron-robed novices are carried

high above the shoulders of their friends and family.

With sixteen million foreigners flying into the country each year,
Thailand is Asia’s primary travel destination and offers a host of places to visit.

Yet despite this vast influx of visitors, Thailand’s cultural integrity remains
largely undamaged. A country that adroitly avoided colonization, it has been able
to absorb Western influences while maintaining its own rich heritage. Though
the high-rises and neon lights occupy the foreground of the tourist picture, the
typical Thai community is still the farming village, and you will not need to
venture far to encounter a more traditional scene of fishing communities, rubber

plantations and Buddhist temples.

fourth in the World for its renowned ethnic cuisine after
Chinese, Italian and French cooking.

The global popularity of Thai cuisine plays an important factor in promoting tourism to Thailand and

International food scene, due its intriguing array of flavors that can ignite your food senses.
In CNN’s list of the “World’s 50 most delicious foods”, popular Thai dishes including Som Tam –
Papaya salad stands at place No.46, Nam Tok Moo – Grilled Pork salad at 19, Tom Yam Kung – Sour
soup with curry and shrimp at 8, and Massaman curry stands on first place as most delicious food in
the world.
Thai cooking blends five fundamental tastes: sweet, spicy, sour, bitter, and salty. Some common
ingredients used in Thai cuisine include garlic, chillis, lime juice, lemon grass, coriander, galangal,
palm sugar and fish sauce. Thai food consists of intricacy, attention to detail, texture, color, taste, and
the use of ingredients with medicinal benefits as well as good flavor.
Thai dishes also emphasize how it looks, how it smells, and how it fits in with the rest of the meal. We
think of all parts of the meal as a whole - sum rap Thai (the way Thais eat), is the term we use for the

Pattaya and the region now has over 26 top class golf
courses all within 60 minutes drive from the city centre.
In 2013 Pattaya was voted by over 500 golf tour operators
as the ‘Best Golf Destination Asia and Australasia’. Not
surprising then that out of a total of 1.6 million rounds of
golf played every year 550,000 rounds were booked by
golf vacationers.
Every year the World’s top stars play at the Thailand Golf
Championship at Amata Springs and at the Honda LPGA
Thailand at Siam Country Club’s Old Course. The likes
of Bubba Watson, Michelle Wei, Henrik Stenson, Stacey
Lewis and Rickie Fowler all love to visit Thailand.
According to Thongchai Jaidee Thailand’s World number
27, the secret weapon are the beautiful Thai Caddies who
will take care of your clubs, give you the yardage and
read the line on the green....and all with a smile!
Apart from the top courses such as Siam Country Club’s
three Championship courses, try the Jack Nicklaus
designed Laem Chabang Country Club, the Pete Dye
Khaow Kheow Golf Club or the Nick Faldo designed
Emerald Golf Club.
The nearest course to the city is the Phoenix Gold Golf
and Country Club with 27 holes recently up graded by
top Thai designer Pirapon Namatra who also designed
Banyan in Hua Hin. It is only 20 minutes from the centre.
Expect to pay anything between THB500-4,000 for your
green fee, caddie fees are around THB350 for 18 holes,
and if you don’t want to walk then a golf cart will set you
back another THB650.
High season rates normally apply to rounds between
October to March when the weather is fine and you can
play from 06.00-18.30hrs. Although between April and
September there are the odd tropical downpours, most of
the courses have excellent drainage, so you can be back
on the course within minutes.

The closest island to Pattaya is KohLarn, located a mere
7km offshore. The further distant islands are KohPhai,

opportunities. At Ocean Marina it is possible to charter a
boat and explore the islands further south with overnight
cruising to Koh Samet and Koh Chang.
Finally closer to the city in Pratamnak is the popular
Royal Varuna Yacht Club if sailing is more to your taste.
