Chapter 8 Bearing
8.1 Bearing
(i) Compass directions are relative to the North Pole. The four main
compass directions, known as the cardinal points: North, South, East and
West. The North does not always have to point upright.
North
North
West North East South
西 West East 东
East North
South South West
南
(ii) The angle between the cardinal points can be further divided equally to
make eight main compass directions.
North (N)
North-west (NW) North-east (NE)
West (W) East (E)
South-west (SW) South-east (SE)
South (S)
(iii) The compass directions are measured clockwise in degrees (from 00 to
3600), starting from the North.
Compass direction Angle measured from the North
North (N)
North-east (NE) 00 or 3600
East (E) 450
South-east (SE) 900
South (S) 1350
South-west (SW) 1800

方位
(iv) The bearing of a point is the angle measured in degrees in a clockwise
direction from the North. Compass angles and bearings are written in
three-digit form, from 0000 to 3600.
三位数
The bearing of point P from A The bearing of point Q from A
is 0500. is 2900.
North
The bearing of P from Q
The bearing of P from Q = 3600 – 1100
= 0550 = 2500
The bearing of P from Q 10 = 60’
= 1250
1 degree = 60 minutes
The bearing of P from Q
= 3600 – 250 30’
= 3340 30’
Exercise 8.1: 2.
1.
The bearing of B from A = The bearing of Q from P =
3. 4.
The bearing of Q from P = The bearing of B from A =
5. 6.
The bearing of B from A = The bearing of B from A =
