MATEJ BEL UNIVERSITY IN BANSKÁ BYSTRICA EDUCATION CREATES THE FUTURE -
BE THE FUTURE!

MATEJ BEL UNIVERSITY IN BANSKÁ BYSTRICA

Matej Bel University was established on the 1st of July 1992 by merging the College of Economic Services
and Tourism in Banská Bystrica and the Pedagogical Faculty in Banská Bystrica. Banská Bystrica has
a long tradition of education and culture. As early as the 13th century there was a parish school and
later a town school. In the 17th century a Jesuit grammar school was founded and it was soon followed
by an Evangelical grammar school established in the same century. It was the latter where Matej Bel,
who gave his name to the University, studied and later taught and held the position of the Rector.
Matej Bel (1684 – 1749) was the author of a large number of works about science, education, national
history and geography, philosophy and religion. His ideas about the equal rights of nations, religious
tolerance, of the integration of people and nations, of love of one´s native country and his belief in the
power of education and culture are still relevant. His works have contributed to the development of
science, school systems, education and culture in Slovakia and Europe.
In the middle part of the 19th century, the Catholic grammar school, using Slovak as the language
of instruction, became an important centre of education in Slovakia. In the academic year 1856-57,
a Teachers´ training college was founded in Banská Bystrica, where thanks to the then current bishop
Štefan Moyses, courses were provided not only in German and Latin, but also in Slovak.
In the academic year 1949-50, a branch of the Pedagogic Faculty of the Slovak University in Bratislava
was established in Banská Bystrica. It was not until 1954 that the first institution of higher education –
the Higher Pedagogic School – started its activities. Ten years later, on the 1st of September 1964, the
Pedagogic Faculty came into being.
In 1973, a branch of the Faculty of Commerce of the School of Economics in Bratislava was established in
Banská Bystrica. In 1977 this became the Faculty of the Economic Services and Tourism. On the 1st July 1992,
the Faculty adopted the new name – Faculty of Economics, which better characterised its main focus.

The Methodological Centre for Slovaks Living Abroad started its activities at MBU in Banská Bystrica
on 1st January 1993. Its activities are generally bound by the agreement concluded between Matej
Bel University and the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic.
Under the supervision of the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic, the Methodological Centre
annually organises specialized educational activities for children studying at basic schools with Slovak
as language of instruction (schools in the natural environment, child compatriot university, dance
school, school of folk music, crafts, marionette theatre, young IT experts school) and it also organises
didactic courses for the teachers in Slovak schools located abroad. Since 2014, the Methodological
Centre has been a co-organiser of the Compatriot Meeting – where natives from Banská Bystrica meet.
This is held during the City Festival (Days of the City). In 2015, the Methodological Centre organised
for the first time a Compatriot Summer meeting under the patronage of the Office for Slovaks Living
Abroad and thus promoted the cooperation with west European and overseas countries. In 2015,
a Summer school of folk culture including a day camp for the native children of Banská Bystrica was
organised.

The Methodological Centre of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica seeks the most efficient and
effective cooperation with organisations and people from amongst Slovak citizens living abroad.
At the same time, we create a friendly environment for the students of our university coming to
study in Slovakia from the compatriot environment, especially from Dolná zem (southern Europe).

CRISIS MANAGEMENT CENTRE

The main purpose of the Crisis Management Centre of Matej Bel University is to manage and also
encourage research in the field of international crisis management within the system of international
relationships. Participation of different scholarly disciplines is also possible if an interdisciplinary
approach is desired. The partial goals of the Centre are:

 to expand the base of theoretical knowledge in research and development in the field of international

relationships as well as national and international security through the use of simulation models
thus helping to solve security issues of both domestic and international nature.

 to increase the effectiveness of decision-making processes in the context of crisis management

using simulation models, and also support development of proper reactions to crisis scenarios in
both researchers and students;

 to seek optimal models and procedures for crisis management in both social and natural contexts.

The Crisis Management Centre of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica provides all researchers of the
university as well as members of partner universities and research institutes with an opportunity to
use the support of analytical, monitoring and prognostic services of the Centre to support their own
creative activities.
Besides the research and development activities, the Crisis Management Centre also has the potential to
become a part of the global crisis management system which is activated in different crises, i.e. situations
in which lives, health or property of the city inhabitants, the region, or even the higher territorial unit are
in danger. The civil protection and crisis management workers can cooperate with the researchers in the
Centre in order to simulate different situations, monitor, evaluate and analyse it in order to find the most
efficient procedures of avoiding dangerous phenomena. As for the practical application, both virtual
and live simulations in which a model crisis situation affects the actual performance and actions of the
terrain workers can be created. The situation in question is resolved on the basis of input data. The Centre
monitors and analyses the course of crisis management actions and evaluates the procedures.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH AT MBU The focus of science and research at Matej Bel University is closely related to the university profiling
mainly towards social sciences and humanities where several of our professionals achieve outstanding
international results (especially in the research in the fields of history and ethnology, humanities, law
and international relations and economics and management). Science, mathematics and information
technologies are developed at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. In 2015, the Accreditation Commission
ranked the research team of mathematicians from the Faculty of Natural Sciences among top research
teams in the Slovak Republic, which is a significant achievement.

There are three centres of excellent research at the University: Centre of Excellence of Informatics and
Knowledge Systems, Centre of Excellence focusing on the research of the national and international
security matters and the Centre of Excellence focusing on the development of a comprehensive
strategy of international crisis management in international relations.

Research teams at the University are involved in domestic and international research, in particular in
the European Framework Programmes (FPs) and Horizon 2020. Within the framework of Erasmus +,
the University supports short and medium term internships of students and teachers at foreign
universities. As a co-ordinating institution, the University has acquired a project in the scheme
Erasmus + “Strategic Partnerships”. In an effort to enhance international research cooperation, MBU
has become a member organization of an international network of research universities Vision 2020:
The Horizon Network. Creative workers involved in international research are provided support by
qualified personnel at the research department which deals with foreign projects and involves
a University contact point for Horizon 2020.

In addition to the cooperation with many leading foreign universities, UMB implements major projects
with several Institutes of SAV (Slovak Academy of Science). The high level of professionalism at the
Department of Physical Education and Sports has been proved by some outstanding performances
by students and graduates at the Department, for example, representing the Slovak Republic in
international sporting competitions including the Olympics.
