The city of Banská Bystrica and the institutions of higher education are pleased to welcome you to this lovely
city. We have joined forces to produce this guide for Erasmus students in Banská Bystrica which is available
online. The survival guide has been written especially for all the Erasmus students or international students of
the higher education institutions. It contains information about the institutions, your rights and responsibilities
before arrival, about the Erasmus Student Network, Slovakia, daily life in Banská Bystrica and it can help you
navigate the practical, social and cultural challenges you might face during your stay in the city.
Erasmus+ in Slovakia reaches a high number of students; international students choose the Slovak republic
as their destination more and more frequently. The biggest advantages come with the very good location in
Central Europe in terms of flight, bus or train connections. Students from all over Europe can get here easily
and travel to the nearby countries within a few days. However, Slovakia is also a beautiful country with
astonishing nature for hiking, we have nice and huge mountains. The best experience for students from
southern countries is the real winter with real snow! But Slovakia is interesting not only during wintertime. We
have 4 seasons during the year so we can do every sport we like, it is not boring here. What is more, for many
Erasmus students, the big advantage comes in terms of lower prices and living costs. There are many
reasons why to choose Slovakia, but these students have one thing in common, they are all part of the Erasmus
story.
“Dear incoming students. We are a group of Slovak students who share energy and a friendly aura. These
qualities are based on the very essence of what we do. Our "job" is to create a place and take care of Erasmus
students who decided to come to Slovakia. For Erasmus, we imagine the primary support in an unknown
country. We make sure that the arrival and stay in Slovakia is as pleasant as possible for YOU and at the same
time, we try to get as close as possible to the culture, history and beauty of Slovakia. At the same time, we try
to be a certain bridge among the students themselves. We organize events where students have the
opportunity to get to know each other better. Besides, these events often serve to mix different cultures freely.
Unique experiences or national customs are very easy to share in a pleasant atmosphere. And so it is common
for us to experience different cultures at one dinner. Enjoy your stay here."
ESN volunteers
Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is the biggest non-profit student organization in Europe. Our mission is to take care of
international students of Erasmus+ programme or any other type of mobilities under the principle of Students Helping
Students. Since most of our members have their own experience with exchanges we know what the short-term stay or
studying abroad can bring, including all the advantages.
Basically, Erasmus is a chance for universities and students across 33 countries to mingle, learn new skills and expand
their horizons. Over two million students have done Erasmus since it’s first started in 1987. In Slovakia you can find more
than 10 sections which try to make your Erasmus unforgettable.
ESN UMB BB is one of the ESN sections in Slovakia, located in the heart of Europe – Banská Bystrica. We started our
existence in January 2010. Our activity focuses on the buddy system and organization of various events for exchange
students.
We are a very active section and we try to provide as many diverse activities and events for international students as
possible. That includes cultural events, such as International village, Social Erasmus activities, such as walking the dogs
from the shelter and engaging the Erasmus students with volunteering, and of course, trips around beautiful Slovakia that
offers scenic sights in its nature (hiking in either High or Low Tatras, trips to Slovak Paradise, caves, etc.) as well as in
centuries-old towns with beautiful castles and city centres. Besides that, we support the team spirit and hence we try to
organize many sports events, be it winter or summer so we organize sport’s days, football matches, bowling nights, skiing
trips or even supporting home ice hockey team (that’s a sport too) because as we say in Slovakia “In a healthy body healthy
mind lives”. But wait…it's not only the local students who improve their language skills. The foreign students can improve
their level of Slovak language as well, in interactive lessons provided by the university and in interaction with our buddies.
We would be lying if we said that Erasmus students don't learn at least a thing or two from us (and no, it's not the swear
words only).
tFinally, what would it be if we didn't mention specific thematic nights? Do not worry, come to experience them. We are
an ESN section with a lovely team of very hard-working volunteers who try to do their best to entertain Erasmus students
and have a good time together each semester. You can bet we are looking forward to everyone who is coming.

More than one artist has written about the magic of Banská Bystrica. Banská
Bystrica is really full of attractions - besides history, hiking trails and fun activities
you will find friends for life since you have decided to come for Erasmus over here.
You can explore the pretty historical center, discover the past at the Slovak
National Uprising Museum, enjoy skiing with friends nearby, dance in the Ministry
of Fun and many other dance clubs and have a great drink in bars. Banská Bystrica
combines history and modernity, the city and beautiful nature. The possibilities of
what to do here in summer and winter are really endless. Some international
students called it “green city during summers, colourful duringautumns”.
Check out some Instagram accounts of Banská Bystrica even before your arrival.
During the Welcome Week we will prepare a city tour and trips across the region.

Slovakia is an amazing place full of wonders,
great people, tasteful food, and colourful culture.
Everyone who visits our small country in the heart of Europe
falls for it - desperately!
During the first week after my arrival, I decided to go out with other international friends and we chose a famous pub
among the locals. Once we arrived there, we started talking in English between each other. This got the attention of one
group of Slovak students. They approached us, and we started talking. At this point we realized how beautiful Slovak girls
are. They asked us to join them for drinks because they wanted to challenge us. Little did we know about Slovak culture
and we started laughing because how would these girls outdrink us, right? Guess, we got destroyed and left with no dignity
and our heads spinning so we decided to head home. Since this day I will never underestimate somebody from Slovakia.

The best year I have lived, the best moments of full joy I have experienced and for sure the best memories I will keep forever
with me. The best thing about my mobility in Slovakia was the people I spent it with. Undoubtedly, the fact of being
surrounded by so many different cultures, traditions and values, has contributed to make this Erasmus year unforgettable.
As I lived in a dormitory with all the rest of the students, we became a huge family and lived any sort of adventure. We
discovered Europe together, while we discovered each other. The best memories of this wonderful year were born with
every trip we made together. No matter if it was planned the same day, or wherever the destination was. Our most loyal
trip partners were always craziness, happiness and will to experience every single moment together. We felt connected
with the stunning natural landscapes of Slovakia, staring at sunsets while we held each other in a big hug. Memories that
will never fade, and that have marked a generation of students in the middle of a little city.

My name is Mirna Ševo, a student of International Relations from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I have spent my
Erasmus in Banska Bystrica. It is so hard to describe such an amazing experience in such a small digital space. Spending
5 months with people from all around Europe, united in one place, teaches you so many things about life and creates
friends for life. Erasmus demands getting outside of your comfort zone, speaking non-native language in a completely
new surrounding but it also changes you forever. My experience in Slovakia was something that I will never forget. It has
been an honour to be a part of it.
Mirna Ševo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
My name is Cristina, I am 21 years old and I have been studying economics in a small town in the middle of Slovakia all
year long. Well, for me the best thing about Erasmus has certainly been the people I've had the chance to meet, because
after all, they are your family during the time you're not at home. I am from Mallorca, from a very small island and it was the
first time I had left for such a long time. So I thank this experience for letting me discover the world and for opening my
mind. I couldn't choose from all the trips, meals, parties, barbecues, excursions, cafés. All I can say is that I encourage
everyone
to let themselves be impressed, love, do crazy things and travel, because in the end, that's what makes us happy.
Maria Cristina Piza Oliver, Mallorca
Coming to Slovakia was a big test for me. It was my first time aboard and away from home for a longer time. Besides that
I play ice hockey and I wanted to find a team where I could play. With all the equipment, bags and vision I came to a
small place in Slovakia called Banska Bystrica. At first it is like every other city with communist past, but once I get to
know the culture, people and the city itself you fell in love very quickly and so did I. Proof of that is that I came back again to
the same city and it felt like home. The best part for me was nature and sports. There are a lot of places to do sport
outside and to enjoy the amazing nature that Slovakia has to offer - plus free trains for students allow you to go anywhere
every once in a while and explore more. Since we are all in a dormitory together it's easy to connect with everybody and
find friendships for life. Plus ESN Banská Bystrica was always there and I believe that all Erasmus students have special
bonds with ESN- ers. For me Banska Bystrica is not just some city where I lived for 2 semesters, it is a place where I can go
and feel like home. Where people accept you quickly and you became a part of it before you even know it.

Do all Erasmus students stay at the same dormitory?
Most of foreign and Erasmus students are usually accommodated together in a student dormitory ŠD 3 at Tajovského
street 51, Banská Bystrica, 97401.
When can a foreign student check-in at the dormitory?
Check-in for winter semester (beginning on the 1st of September each year)
starts on the 2.9., while for the summer semester you can come anytime
during January. Also, when it comes to the summer semester which starts
in February, it is advisable for foreign students to come at the beginning of
February, since it happened a few times that we had problems with
accommodating new incoming students. There were still some students
from the previous semester who wanted to stay as long as possible. Just
don’t forget to tell your buddy the exact date of your arrival (when you will
already know it), as he/she will be the person to help you with
accommodation, administration and many other issues.
When does the semester start and finish?
The winter semester usually starts in the second half of September.
Lectures are given until the first week of December. After that period there
are 6 weeks for exams, after which the summer semester begins usually
at the beginning of February. Sometimes it is possible to finish all the
exams even before Christmas.
What types of rooms are available and how much do they cost?
There are either single rooms, which cost 61€ per month or 3-bed rooms, which cost 54€ per month. One single room and
one 3-beds room share a bathroom and a toilet.
Will I get a single room if I ask for it?
There are single rooms and 3-bed rooms available in the dormitory, but demand for single bed rooms is much higher than
the actual number of available single rooms. It can happen that you will be sharing a room with two other people even
though you have asked for a single room in application. Unfortunately, we cannot guess which type of room you will get.
Shall we pay for accommodation in advance?
No. You will pay in cash after you check-in with the
dormitory supervisor. You will pay for the first 4
months (Sep - Dec) in one payment. For a single
room it is 244€ and for a 3-bed room it is 216€ per
person. You will pay for January in winter semester
and June in summer semester only if you decide to
stay. Students staying for the whole year will pay for
the remaining 5 months (Jan - May) in February,
again, in one payment. For checking-in bring also 2
passport format photos of your face for a dormitory
card. It does not matter when during the month you
come; you will be asked to pay for the whole month.
Are there any additional fees?
If you bring any electrical appliances with you, such
as a laptop, a kettle, a toaster, etc. you will be asked
to pay a fee for them, sometime during the semester
(usually October). Usage of a hairdryer or iron is free
of charge. It is strictly forbidden to use your own
electric heaters or cookers in your room, only
because the wiring of the building is old and could
cause a short circuit.
What is the equipment of the room?
There is a bed, a wardrobe, a shelf, a table and a chair for each student in the room. Everyone will get a pillow, a duvet
and beddings as well when checking in. If you want to, you can even get a reading lamp and an additional blanket. Each
room has a balcony as well. There is a socket for internet connection in each room but that means you need to bring
your own LAN cable as there is no Wi-Fi in the dormitory rooms.
What about bathrooms?
Four people share a bathroom and a toilet. Shampoos, shower gels, toilet paper, etc. are not provided. Cleaning ladies
clean the bathrooms as well as your room once a week.
Is there a kitchen in the dormitory? How is it equipped?
Yes, each floor has its own kitchen, that is, about 16 people share one kitchen. You will find that there is a table, chairs,
a fridge with a little freezer, a sink, a cupboard and a cooker. There are no pots, plates, cups, cutlery, etc.
Is there a laundry room in the dormitory?
There are two washing machines in the dormitory that students can use. For the usual washing programme you will pay 2€
but you have to pay this price in 50 cent coins. That is the reason why 50 cent coins have a special value for our foreign
students :). Instructions say that you do not need to use your washing powder, it will be added automatically.
Is there an internet connection in the rooms and dormitory? What about computers?
Yes, you have internet connection in your room, though you will need a LAN cable to connect.
You will need to set up the network options in your computer (the instructions are in Slovak
here https://lms2.umb.sk/course/view.php?id=58 - ask for help - below the bright yellow
notice – it depends on which OS are you using). You will also need a login and a password,
which you will be given by your Erasmus coordinator here at UMB once they set up your
account in our Academic Information system (AIS). There is a Wi-Fi connection in the main
corridor of the dormitory and in the buildings of all the faculties, for which you will use the
same login and a password from the AIS. You can always ask a buddy that lives in the dormitory
to set it all up for you. Also, you will find common computers for students in corridors of
faculties and in the main library that is located in the building at Tajovského 51 (on the way to
the dormitory).
What are the options for eating? Is there a canteen?
Yes, right opposite the dormitory building is another building in which you will find a big hall – that is the canteen where
you can get a lunch or a dinner for 1,74 €! Welcome to low-cost Slovakia! If you want to use the canteen you will need to
get issued a special card for it or a Slovak ISIC.
Is an ISIC from my home country valid in Slovakia?
Yes, but only for ISIC discounts. State discounts for travelling and other functions of university ISIC issued in Slovakia
can be provided only for multifunctional chip card issued by a university. ISIC issued in other country (not in Slovakia) does
not have a chip, so it is not possible to use it for buses and trains, but you still can get ISIC discounts in shops, ski resorts
etc. We strongly recommend you to buy a Slovak ISIC issued by the university because it will make your life much easier
and you will have the same advantages as Slovak students. You will get a 50% discount for travelling, free travelling by
train around the whole Slovakia (there are certain conditions, but basically – it's FREE!), you can use it as a bus card, a
canteen card, as a library card, etc. :)
How much will I pay for a Slovak ISIC with a chip?
If you already have an ISIC from your home country, it will cost you 13€, because you already have an ISIC license. If you
do not have an ISIC from your home country, it will cost you around 20€.
Will I get a buddy?
Of course, every student will be assigned a buddy. Buddy is a Slovak student who will help you before, during and
after your mobility. If you did not get one by the time you arrive in Slovakia, contact ESN UMB on
[email protected].
What is the weather like in Banská Bystrica?
You can experience everything in Banská Bystrica when it comes to weather (and not weather only) – hot as well as cold
days. The beginning of winter semester and end of summer semester can be really hot. Autumn is usually rainy, windy
and foggy, as the city is located in a valley. There are lot of mountains around. On average, the temperature oscillates
around 10°C. Snow in December is not always guaranteed, but in January and February you will enjoy a lot of it for
sure. Temperatures usually change from freezing -10°C to warmer +5°C. Sometimes it rains and snows at the same time
and on other occasions it just rains. The spring starts in the end of March and it means the weather varies from nice
sunny 12°C to colder rainy days, but the temperatures increase gradually with the months. In May, the weather is usually
already stable and can be quite hot.
