The Gateway Initiative, a
collaborations between the South
Baldwin and Coastal Alabama
Chambers of Commerce, has
partnered with the Alabama Office of
Apprenticeship (AOA) and the US
Department of Labor to develop a
program unique to our area, like none
other in the country.
Apprenticeships have helped build
America since as early as the colonial
period; and in 1937 Congress passed
the National Apprenticeship Act (aka
Fitzgerald Act.) Since then, the
Registered Apprentice programs have
consisted mostly of manufacturing,
construction, utilities, and healthcare.
The Gateway Initiative has made
history by developing Registered
Apprenticeships (RA) in the Hospitality
and Tourism industry, for our unique
coastal community.
This catalogue explains how
apprentices can receive transferrable,
national credentials in these
occupations. Programs are also
offered through Coastal Alabama
Community College, who is also a
Sponsor with the AOA and a key
Gateway partner.
