A) CGPA of at least 2.75/4.00; or
B) CGPA of 2.50 - 2.74/4.00 with; or
• Research experience – 1 year; or
• Professional experience in related field- 1

• One (1) academic publication in related field;

• Grade B for major/ elective courses; or
• Grade B+ for final year project.
C) CGPA of 2.00 - 2.49/4.00 (Honours degree)

Introduction
The School of Humanities of Universiti Sains Malaysia offers five (5) postgraduate programmes
at the Masters level by mixed mode (coursework and research):

The Master degree programme by mixed mode is a programme that comprises core courses,
electives and dissertation.

Application
Candidates for the Master of Arts/Science by mixed mode must minimally possess good
Bachelor degree (Second Class Upper or CGPA of at least 2.75 and above) in their respective
fields of specialisation and CGPA of 3.00 for Master of Arts in Linguistics and English
Language Studies. Nonetheless, candidates, who do not have the appropriate academic
background but who are eligible to be considered, must take the required undergraduate
courses, and pass them before enrolling in their studies.
Language requirements: For Malaysian citizens, the minimum qualification is a pass in
Bahasa Malaysia in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. For foreigners, candidates must sit and pass
LKM100 as a requirement for Bahasa Malaysia at Universiti Sains Malaysia. In the field of
Linguistics and English Language Studies, candidates must have TOEFL minimum score of
550 or IELTS Band 6.
Dissertation
The candidates for mixed mode programmes are required to do and pass the dissertation. The
candidates must produce a dissertation of 25,000 words. They are advised to identify the research
topic and discuss with their supervisor in advance before they register for the dissertation.
Full-time students can register for dissertation after a duration of one semester while parttime
students can register for dissertation after a duration of two semesters. Candidates who possess
good results and planned to complete their programme of studies in a minimum period of
candidature must see their respective programmes’ chairperson.
Dissertation must be completed in a stipulated period of time. Full-time candidates must
complete the dissertation in one semester and part-time candidates have to complete it in two
semesters (including presenting the proposal, writing up of the dissertation,
submitting the dissertation, attending the viva and doing the corrections). Students who repeat the
dissertation must work on a new research topic under a new
supervisor.
Graduation Requirements
1. Candidates must fulfil the MA/MSc by coursework and dissertation requirement of
40/44 units by passing all the 5/6 courses and the dissertation component.
2. The minimum grade for passing a course is C+ or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.33.
To graduate, candidates have to obtain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of
3.0 and above.
3. Candidates who are required to take prerequisite courses must pass these courses
with a minimum of C+.
