Game Time

Hector had the same routine every day. He got up,
ate breakfast, went to school, and came home. Day in,
day out, it was always the same. To Hector, his days
were as exciting as watching paint dry. Nothing changed.

Then, one afternoon, Mom came home with a
surprise. Her voice was light as a feather. She danced
into Hector’s room, looked around, and shook her head.
His room was a disaster area. A towel on the floor was as
stiff as a board.

“You’ll want to find some clean clothes in a hurry.
We’re going to the game tonight,” Mom said. She held up
two basketball tickets.

Mom’s news was music to Hector’s ears. His favorite
basketball team was playing the home team. Instantly, his
eyes lit up.

Mom explained that they would be night owls tonight.
Since the game started at eight o’clock, they might not get
home until eleven or later. Hector didn’t mind. The game
would be very exciting, and he knew that he would sleep
like a baby.

Just before Mom and Hector were about to leave,
Gran called. She needed Mom’s help to get ready for a
doctor’s visit the next day. Mom agreed to go to Gran’s
house right away, but she and Hector had to hatch a new
plan. As they tossed ideas back and forth, a light bulb
went on in Hector’s head. Maybe Gramps would like to go
in Mom’s place. They called Gramps, and his reply came
as quick as lightning. He would love to go to the game! It
was smooth sailing now, thought Hector. If only his team
could win tonight.
