The Wrexham
Maelor
Hospital

The Wrexham Maelor Hospital is the District General Hospital for Wrexham &
Flintshire. It is one of the largest hospitals in Wales serving a population of
250,000. It is situated on the outskirts of Wrexham (pop. 40,000), which is near
the Welsh/English border of North Wales.

The catchment area of the hospital extends beyond Wrexham County to
include patients from Flintshire, Denbighshire, Powys, as well as some from
Cheshire, the Wirral and Shropshire.

The Wrexham Maelor Hospital is a 779 bed District General Hospital providing
most medical and Surgical Specialities. There is a consultant body of 154.

All the major specialities and subspecialties are represented with the exception
of spinal surgery, plastic surgery, cardiac surgery & neurosurgery.

Wrexham Maelor Hospital is part of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
(BCUHB), and has been Trauma Unit as part of the North West Midlands
trauma network, feeding into the Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH) Major
Trauma Centre (MTC) for adults, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for children
as part of the North West Children’s Trauma Network.

Who We Are

The Wrexham ED consultants provide a hands-on service and lead the
department. The clinical practice is unrestricted to include all emergency
activity e.g. sedation, ultrasound, NIV, cardioversion, airway management, CDU
medicine, clinics etc.

The ED Consultants have a wealth and varied experience including
undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; trauma; critical care;
emergency airway management; paediatrics; sports medicine; emergency
department reconfiguration; and high-level management including significant
engagement at Royal College of Emergency Medicine and Welsh
Government levels.

The consultants work alongside middle grades and share the burden of
unsocial hours working.

What Roles
Are On Offer?

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board currently have opportunities for
Emergency Medicine doctors at the following levels based at Wrexham
Maelor Hospital and Glan Clwyd Hospital:

• Junior Tier (equivalent to SHO level) The post is for 40 hours with 50% out of
hours banding. The rota is a full shift pattern, with 1:2 weekends. There is
Consultant shop floor presence 0800-2200 every weekday and extended to
12 midnight at weekends & additional Senior (including Consultant) night
cover during the week.

• Middle Tier (equivalent to staff grade level) – The job attracts 11 PAs which
include 2 SPA sessions. The rota is sustainable with one evening shift a week,
one in four weekends (either 9am-5pm or 5pm-1am) with no on call
commitments. Nights involve doing 4 nights in a row (12mn-8am) every 16
weeks as the consultants also take part in equivalent night cover rota.

• Senior Tier (equivalent to Consultant level). The contract is for 11 PAs of
which 8 are DCC and 1 for on call ample opportunity to take study and
professional leave as well as develop any special interests, and this is fully
supported within the department.

• 1:4 weekends – alternate 9am-5pm and 5pm -12mn (with on call)

• Nights every 16 weeks (Mon –Thurs 12mn-8am) with following Mon-Weds
off.

motorway system. Chester is 13 miles, Manchester 54 miles
and Liverpool 40 miles from Wrexham by road.

attractive; Cheshire, North Shropshire, the Berwyn Mountains,

Llangollen and the Dee Valley are all within 15 miles of the

A multitude of entertainment is at hand in the surrounding
Wrexham area from numerous theatres, concerts, and comedy
events, a number of which are high profile international stars.

Numerous options for dining out exist with all types and countries
of cuisines available including 3 different Michelin star
restaurants all within 30 to 40 miles.

Wrexham is also within easy reach of Premiership football
stadiums in Liverpool and Manchester.

There are numerous local cultural organisations with various
active social and religious groups including representation from
Muslim and Hindu faiths.
