Introduction: Urte Paulus as Archer
• started Archery in 2000
• over 85 goldmedals in regional/national/international
tournaments
• won a many national titles in Austria (outdoor, indoor, 3D).

courses for archery, aiming sports and
Competitive Minigolf coaches.
2011-2012: education to WA coaching
course conductor (specialized in Olympic
Recurve).
• August 2012: Conducting for WA and IOC a
10 day archery coaching course level 1 in
Lilongwe / Malawi.

• born spring 1966
• 1985-1992 study of Biology in
Freiburg/Germany and Vienna/Austria.
• married since 1993 with University Professor Dr. Hannes
Paulus
• 2 children (born 1993 and 1995)
• hobbies: archery, dancing (all kind), writing, dance-,
insects- and spider-projects in elementary schools.

Walter Rauch)
• 1961: 1. Austrian Archery club founded (BC Union
Vienna, former 1. Wiener Bogenschützenklub)
(Maybe 1960 Foundation of the “1. Union Bogenklub”)
• 1963: ÖBSV (Austrian Archery Association) founded,
with 3 official Clubs (Vienna, Bad Goisern, Reutte)
• 1968: European Championship in Reutte
• 1969: Development of “ALU MAGIC” (Alois Zopf, Bad
Goissern), first take down bow
• 1976 – 2012: 4x Qualification for Olympia

Summary
• most of the Austrian archers are
interested in
– Traditional Archery (bowhunter recurve
(IB), longbow and historical bow)

• Most coaches (L1 – L2) come from
traditional archery and want to teach

• Till now not every club has a coach (will
hopfully change soon)
Education concept for archers
• WA manual for beginners (extended with more security
rules, planning of trainings sessions, tuning and little
competition education, adapted scores for non-sight
archers 85 rings)
• Competition education: rules, planning, preparation,
post processing, behaviour, etc.

Education concept for coaches
Requirements
• Level 1:
– +18ys, 2 years club membership,
– score (18m, 40 cm face, 30 arrows, recurve): 200 rings
– knowledge of the WA coaching manual for beginners
– bring their teaching equipment with them
• Level 2:
– 1 year coaching (L1) experience (confirmed by the club)
– competition experience in 3 disciplines and two bow types (1
traditional, 1 with a sight)
• Level 3:
– 2 years coaching experience (L2)
– general coach L3 basic course (5 weeks over 1 year)
Education concept for coaches
Teaching equipment
• light (+/- 20#) teaching bow (Long– or Recurcebow) for beginner:
wooden or plastic riser, wooden (+fibre glass) or plastic Recurve
limbs, button is optional.
• simple stabilizer and sight for the Recurvebow
• at least 6 arrows (no need of high quality)
• long armguard, finger protector (glove or tab), quiver, chest guard (if
necessary)
• 1 mirror (minimum size 20x30 cm)
• 1 elastic- or ruberband (2-2,5m)
• 1 elastic string (ca. 160-165cm)
• braces ribbon 2,5 m x 3cm
• 1 woollen thread (ca. 2,5m)
• safety pins, tooth stick,
• sticky tape or crepe band
• piece of rope (ca. 50cm x 0,5cm) + USB Flash
• 2 soft juggling balls for all files (PPP, word)
• 1 shoelace (ca. 1cm x 70cm)
• 1 measure band (200 cm, inch), 1 gauche +/- 1000 pages
• 1 photo camera with video funktion
Education concept for coaches
Time frame:
• Level 1:
– 2 weekends (too less!!!!!! Participants >16, 2 conductor)
– 40 lessons (archery specific)
• Level 2:
– 3x4 days + 1x3 days (June to November)
– +/- 148 lessons (59 general / 79 archery specific / 10
evaluation) + homework
• Level 3:
– 5x 1 week (May – November), general
– +/- 2 weeks/ weekends archery specific + homework
(coaching, planing, documantation etc.); depending on the
organisation, not jet well thought out standard very
low!!!!!!!!
