2016 TLC
ANNUAL
REPORT
Welcome from the Executive Director
and the TLC Board Chair
The Learning Centers at Fairplex have greeted 2017 with renewed optimism for our mission and vision after a 2016 that
we would term as character building. The anticipated challenges of recruiting for a new LACFA CEO and a new Director
of Development didn’t slow us down. Instead, we took this as an opportunity to work more efficiently and focus on the
priorities that brought value to TLC and supported our community. The result was continued support by a venerable
group of patrons, introductions to new donors within Los Angeles and an expanded presence in our community
supporting their needs from early childhood through adulthood.
There is no question that our services provide value within Pomona along with creating a blueprint for other communities
to leverage based on our approaches and lessons learned. As we look to grow TLC’s programs, we are taking into account a
shift in career technical education geared towards young adults, including workforce development, growing support for
natural playgrounds and healthy eating initiatives that include urban farming and related education on cooking and nutrition.
Before sharing TLC’s plans for 2017, I wanted to highlight a few success stories from this previous year:
• An increase in new donors by 35% leadersh
• $250,000 gift allowing for a matching catalyst fund creation
• Pledge of $1.5m to be paid out over the next 10 years for the CDC and Farm Education leadership program
• $14,000 per year pledge for 14 years to create AXC welding lab scholarships
• CDC live auction revenue was up 27% and raised $305K
• Sold a restored 1932 roadster for $105K, the proceeds of which allowed for expansion in our automotive pathway.
• Dynamic new and continuing support from Wells Fargo, Allergan, Inland Empire United Way and the
Green Foundation
As we embark on 2017, we are proud to be part of an organization that delivers value through our programs within the leadership program
local community. Our focus continues to be not only funding for TLC’s programs but growing them to include a welding
lab, access to our programs for more students, a broader brand presence outside of Pomona and refining a self-sustaining
donor model.
As always, none of this would be possible without your support. Our intention is to continue to foster relationships
with people that can be long-term advocates of TLC and our work. If you know of people we should connect with, don’t
hesitate to call us.
All the best, Art Ludwick leadership program

The Path to Education
Chase, 5, carefully traces the letter C on a worksheet – first with his
finger, then with his pencil. Cs are easy, he says, because that’s what
his name starts with. The letter S – well, the S in his name has been
a bit of a challenge since he was 4, you know, way back in preschool.
It’s because S can look like a 5 or a Z if it’s turned around. You have
to get it just right. Getting things just right is what the teachers in the
kindergarten class at the Child Development Center do – preparing
the students for the next step in their education. Students who’ve been
at the CDC for a few years prior to kindergarten have been nurtured
and prepared for their future from the moment they walked in the door.
Just ask Chase. Today he conquers his ABCs; tomorrow, calculus.

The Path to a Career
Brenda Gomez is pretty sure she wants to go to law school but the
pull to create is strong within her. Drawing. Writing. Photography.
Filmmaking. She can’t deny that she has the soul of an artist. “I really
like anything that is hands on,” said the Pomona High School junior.
To feed her artist’s soul, she enrolled in a ceramics class through TLC’s
Career & Technical Education Center. The process of molding and shaping
clay is a cathartic one for Brenda, allowing her to express feelings she can’t
get from reading a law textbook. “I know I want to do law, but I think I’ll
minor in art.”

The Path to Leadership
Patricia Chaidez isn’t one to let an opportunity pass her by – even if that means
getting an inside scoop from an older sister. See, there is no competition in the
Chaidez home – just support. So, after hearing her sister praise her experience on
TLC’s Junior Fair Board Leadership Program, Patricia signed up as soon as she was
eligible. In the nearly two years since then, Patricia has expanded her leadership
and communication skills with the help of special projects and the guidance of
mentors. “JFB allowed me to get out of my comfort zone in areas of public speaking,”
Patricia said. Patricia, a Ganesha High School senior who loves U.S. History and
environmental science, is prepared to take what she’s learned through JFB to Occidental
College as she pursues her dream of becoming an immigration attorney.

The Path to Sharing a Passion
“One person with passion is better than 40 people merely interested.” EM Forster’s words ring true.
But what happens when you have a room full of 40 passionate people? That room becomes a furnace
that can’t go unnoticed – which aptly describes the Millard Sheets Art Center during ArtReach, the
annual regional high school art exhibition held in March. The 2016 theme was the Art of Metaphor.
Metaphors are about understanding and experiencing one thing in terms of another, explained Curator
Lugene Whitley. They’re comparisons that show how two things that are unalike in most ways yet can be
similar in other, significant ways. Metaphors are ever-present in everyday life, language, thought and
action. They’re at work in all fields of human endeavor – advertising, politics, business, science and
psychology to name a few. They infiltrate our purchasing decisions, nudge public opinion and form the
language of human relationships and emotions. Student artists were challenged to notice the metaphors
around them; to find similarity in the dissimilar. And they did, using time, emotions and animals as symbols.
With their art, Whitley said, these talented young artists showed us how we speak, write and think in
metaphors. These students thoughtfully and beautifully demonstrated how impossible it would be for us to
navigate the passages of life without metaphors.

The Path to Discovery
As volunteers from TLC’s Ambassador Volunteer Program line up to greet them,
thousands of students from schools throughout Southern California enter the
campus of the LA County Fair ready to be awed, ready to learn and ready to
explore. In 2016, there were 175,000 participants. What did they do? They learned
to churn butter – by hand. They learned not all dinosaurs were carnivores. They
discovered artists can be inspired by anything – even by something as commonplace
as water. Thanks to generous donations, students attended The World’s Largest
Classroom® for a day to learn lessons that will last a lifetime.

The Path to Volunteerism
We have to thank a five-ton monster truck for bringing Leticia Lares to TLC’s Ambassador Volunteer
Program. She doesn’t drive one; she hasn’t even ridden in one. But back in 2014 she noticed a call for
volunteers at KABOOM!, the Fairplex 4th of July Monster Truck show. “I was actually too late to get
signed up as a volunteer for that particular event, but that’s when I decided to inquire and become
an Ambassador.” For more than 15 years, volunteers have played a critical role at Fairplex and the LA
County Fair, providing thousands of hours in guest services, assisting field trip visitors, composting and
planting in The Farm, and serving as the eyes, ears and hands at many levels. For Leticia, volunteering
to be an Ambassador was like walking into the home of an old friend. “My parents used to work at the
Fair back in the day when I was about 3 years old,” she recalled. Before becoming an Ambassador, Leticia
wasn’t aware of the myriad of events held at Fairplex. Now, she volunteers throughout the year. “I love
helping at the Fair, with the FairKids Field Trips, and I have helped on The Farm, with a painting class, the
So Cal College Fair, the cookie-decorating event in December – anything I have time for.” Leticia’s
involvement has created a path for her family to volunteer, too. “I enjoy that four out of my five family
members have volunteered with me on more than one occasion.”

Jeremiah, 8, walked along the stalks and stems of a variety of produce growing at The
Farm at Fairplex. His eyes widened as he saw row after row of boxed vegetables. “The
farmer said I can grow these at home, even if my yard is small.” Teaching youngsters
how to grow their own food, and the health benefits behind growing a garden, is the
foundation of the educational programming at The Farm. In 2016, The Farm hosted
its first full year-round field trip program, drawing nearly 2,000 students who learned
about worm composting, saw where eggs come from, and how math and gardening go
hand in hand (measuring plots and deciding the yield of plants). New community events,
Grow Pomona and Fall in the Farm, collectively drew more than 1,500 visitors of all ages
to experience sustainable living and how to practice it. Career and Technical Education
classes in urban farming taught that a job in agriculture plays a vital role in the American
fabric. The Farm definitely served as a path to the future.

THE LUDWICKS & THE CDC AUCTION:
SILVER ANNIVERSARY
The Child Development Center Auction
celebrated its 25th year in 2016, a milestone
that wouldn’t have been possible without
the assistance of Sarah and Art Ludwick.
The Ludwicks have been involved with the
annual event since it began in 1991.
It’s hard to imagine what a CDC Auction
would be without their enthusiastic and
whole-hearted participation – Sarah as a
tireless organizer and Art as the premier
auctioneer. Sarah came to the CDC via her
volunteer efforts with the University of
La Verne’s child development center. The
two centers merged in 1991, creating what
Sarah calls a coupling that has provided
a wonderful home for the youngsters that
it serves and the young educators that work
at the center. Thank you to the Ludwicks
for 25 wonderful years- we look forward
to next year.

TLC HISTORY AT A GLANCE
Education has been a commitment of the Los Angeles County Fair Association
(LACFA) since its inception in 1922. Programs have evolved and thrived
resulting in an impressive and enduring educational legacy for the surrounding
communities, which represent one of the most populous, ethnically and
socio-economically diverse areas in the United States. In 1998, LACFA established
the Foundations at Fairplex and, in 2010, they evolved into The Learning Centers
at Fairplex (TLC), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, uniquely positioned
to provide a host of educational programs at Fairplex. By complementing
existing businesses and activities on the 487-acre Fairplex campus (home to
the LA County Fair and 300 year-round events), TLC’s unique programs offer
participants relevant opportunities, from early childhood education to
adult learning.
TLC is a nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.
Funds to support programs of TLC are received from individual donations,
special events and grants from private foundations, corporations and
government entities. LACFA provides funding for administrative expenses so that
every dollar donated goes directly to support program delivery and makes an
immediate impact on our students.
Programs of The Learning Centers include; the Child Development Center,
FairKids Field Trip Program, Career and Technical Education Center, Millard
Sheets Art Center, and the Junior Fair Board Leadership Program.
Additional programs include the Ambassador Volunteer Program and
incorporating The Farm at Fairplex for field trips, educator workshops and more.
THE LEARNING CENTERS
AT FAIRLEX MISSION STATEMENT
Through the distinctive resources of Fairplex, The Learning Centers provides a
wide spectrum of innovative and enriching educational experiences that bring
learning to life, benefit our diverse communities and prepare our participants
for success.
