2017 TLC ANNUAL

REPORT

Welcome from the Executive leadersh
Director and the TLC Board Chair
leadership program
Our mission at The Learning Centers at Fairplex is to provide enriching educational experiences that bring
learning to life, benefit our diverse communities, and prepare our students for success. We begin 2018 with a leadership program
commitment to build upon our success, learn from our challenges and pursue our mission with vigor. During the leadership program
2017 year’s strategic planning process, we conducted program reviews to determine our strengths, challenges
and opportunities. What stands out the most are the strengths we enjoy as a result of our partnerships, and
collaborations with organizations whose work complements our own. We are grateful for our partners, such as
the University of La Verne, Pomona and Bonita Unified School Districts, and San Antonio Regional Occupational
Program. Together we are better in serving the needs of our community. As you read through our report, you
will be introduced to some of the highlights of our success. You will begin to notice a theme of “growing leaders”
throughout our work. Starting with our new CDC Director, Alexis Luby-Gordillo, who started with us more than
10 years ago as a working mom; Ruby Escamilla, who began her teaching career as a ULV work-study student
and now is the Center’s Assistant Director. We are also proud of our young leaders, whose introduction to a
career pathway is just starting to be ignited – such as Keianna Barnitt, who graduated from our AXC Career
Tech Auto program, and is on her way toward an automotive career. It is indeed exciting to inspire and ignite the
passions of our emerging leaders. We could not offer the educational programs, or be successful in inspiring our
future leaders without your support!

We are grateful for Mr. Arthur Ludwick, past TLC Board Chair and Mr. Rich Crean, past TLC Board Vice Chair
for their years of guidance, support, and leadership. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that we thank
them for their leadership. Change can sometimes be a challenge, but can also stimulate growth. We are excited
to build upon the success and great work of our previous leaders, and we will honor their work with a renewed
commitment to our mission.

It is an exciting time at The Learning Centers at Fairplex. With renewed commitment to our mission, our Fairplex
Strategic Plan is reaching a close and positions us to focus on our future. We are encouraged by the start of a
new year, and all of the possibilities ahead. “The future is not a gift – it is an achievement,” said Harry Lauder.
We are grateful for our partners to help us achieve a better future for our students and our community.

A Partner in Sustainability and Healthy Living

The Farm at Fairplex is developing partnerships throughout the community. In 2017, it partnered with Pomona Unified
School District via Cal Poly Pomona’s Landscape Architect and Food & Nutrition departments. The Cal Poly students helped
run afterschool enrichment programs for six PUSD elementary schools. The Farm educated the college students on various
vegetables’ growth and care, then supplied them with seedlings to take to the elementary students where they shared the
information they learned at The Farm. The PUSD students transplanted and grew the seedlings, later harvesting their crops,
which were used in afterschool food and nutrition classes for them and their parents. The Farm also helped a school in the
Upland Unified School District with its garden, supplying it with more than 500 seedling starts. Next up is assisting two
elementary schools in Riverside who decided, after a field trip to The Farm, to start their own gardens.

Being Present

One of the first things Jesse Hernandez does in the morning is make tea. Not boiling a kettle and putting a teabag into a cup to
steep but literally making tea – drying leaves of herbs and spices from The Farm at Fairplex, stripping the leaves and placing
them in homemade teabags. When he’s done with that, it’s back to rototilling, seeding and, if there is time, pickling some eggs.
That is all part and parcel of being an Ambassador for The Learning Centers, in particular as a volunteer at The Farm. Jesse, a
retiree from UPS, has been volunteering for the past five years. When he isn’t getting his hands dirty in The Farm, he is helping
out at the art center or assisting students and teachers during field trips, including the FairKids and Farm Field Trip programs.
Jesse said, “Volunteering is gratifying, especially at The Farm. It’s peaceful and I actually learn a lot by being there.” Jesse’s
wife, a recent retiree, will soon join him as an Ambassador.

From Nostalgia to New

It takes a village to assist over 150,000 students and teachers on field trips to the LA County Fair. As volunteers from TLC’s
Ambassador Volunteer Program line up to greet them, thousands of students from schools throughout Southern California enter
the campus of the LA County Fair ready to be awed, ready to learn and ready to explore. In 2017, there were 156,799 students,
teachers and chaperones who came to learn in the World’s Largest Classroom®. What did they do? They learned to churn butter
– by hand, that some bugs are edible and full of protein, women artists have a strong voice and so much more. Thanks to our
generous donors, students attend The World’s Largest Classroom® for a day to learn lessons that will last a lifetime.

Millard Sheets Art Center was privileged to participate in Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin
American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Initiated through grants from the Getty Foundation, PST: LA/LA took place from
September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California, from Los Angeles to Palm Springs,
and from San Diego to Santa Barbara. MSAC’s exhibition, Judithe Hernández and Patssi Valdez: One Path Two Journeys, brought together
two women who were part of Los Four and Asco, two ground-breaking Los Angeles artist collectives speaking out for Mexican-American
civil rights in the 1970s and early ‘80s. Their work validated ethnic and cultural practices and campaigned against discrimination, racism,
and exploitation. Their unique public art and bi-cultural style brought Chicano art to the attention of the mainstream art world. One
Path Two Journeys presented a visual dialogue of their established and new works. Whether through the brilliant colors and patterns of
movement in the work of Valdez or the richly representative pastels of Hernández, visitors experienced the intimate, powerful, personal
and defiant aesthetic evolution of these two artists.

Makaria Yami wants to be Secretary of State one day. A lofty career goal but not unattainable. The Bonita High School student is a self-proclaimed
“political junkie” who will major in Political Science and Africana Studies at Barnard College. As a Junior Fair Board member, Makaria learned how
to lead and create projects. She said JFB gave her the tools to start up projects: knowing how to advertise, delegate tasks, account for money, work
with team members, conduct meetings, plan and lead. “I left JFB knowing how to lead projects that are charitable, so that I can be successful with
my endeavors while giving back to my community.”

to practicing, preparing and demonstrating their work ethic and passion for the industry.

Two CTEC Urban Farming students completed a paid summer practicum with Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden as junior curatorial interns.
The six-week program was extended thanks to the students’ stellar performance and excellent training. This laid the foundation to establish a
Community Classroom for the students.

Making Her Way

Keianna Barnitt has always loved cars – not just the sleek lines or shiny rims but the moving parts of the engine. After all, the internal combustion
engine is a huge part of industrial civilization! But she didn’t feel comfortable taking auto classes in school. Even now, it just isn’t something most
girls do. So, the Charter Oak High School student enrolled in afterschool classes at the Alex Xydias & Pete Chapouris Center for Automotive Arts, a
program of the Career and Technical Education Center. Despite being the only girl in the program, Keianna felt comfortable. She was just a member
of a team of students sharing their love of all things automotive. Keianna graduated from AXC and high school in the summer of 2017 and is moving
on to work in the automotive industry. She could be fixing your engine or designing the car of the future.

Homegrown Leadership

The Child Development Center knows how to grow ‘em – and it’s not just youngsters. Two longtime staff members now lead the center.
Alexis Luby-Gordillo is the new Director and Ruby Escamilla is the new Assistant Director. Alexis first became acquainted with the CDC after
returning to college in 2006. She observed CDC classes as part of her degree program then began working at the CDC in 2008. From her first stint
as a substitute teacher, Alexis was promoted quickly to every next level, joking that she held every position except kitchen staff. She was officially
promoted to Program Director of the CDC in December and will receive her master’s degree this spring. “With the help of our amazing team of early
childhood professionals, my goal is to continue to provide developmentally-appropriate experiences for young children that encourage their early
love for learning,” Alexis said. “We also look forward to carrying on the tradition of teaching our children important social emotional skills that can
be used throughout their lifetime.” Both of Alexis’ sons are alumni of the CDC.

Ruby started at the Child Development Center as a work-study student for the University of La Verne, were she earned her bachelor’s and master’s
degrees. She was hired at the CDC in 2001 and quickly moved up. Over the course of the past seven years on the leadership team she has conducted
countless trainings in all areas of child development. As the new Assistant Director, Ruby supports Alexis in realizing the Center’s future goals.
“I am thrilled to continue my work with the CDC as Assistant Director and helping Alexis plan for the future,” Ruby said. “We get to engage with so
many wonderful children and families. It is extremely fulfilling to prepare them for their educational journey.”

THE LUDWICKS

This year The Learning Centers at Fairplex
would like to honor Art and Sarah Ludwick.
Their involvement with education is
unquestionably a huge part of their lives
and one to which they are firmly committed.
The Ludwicks involvement with Fairplex
began in 1991. Sarah was volunteering
at the University of La Verne’s child
development center, which needed to find
a new location. Just about that time the
child development center at Fairplex was
rebuilding, thanks to a grant. Quite simply,
Fairplex had a facility that could house
the children from ULV. The philosophies
complemented each other and the Fairplex/
ULV Child Development Center was born.
Sarah said that the coupling of the centers
has provided a wonderful home for the
youngsters that it serves and the young
educators that work at the center.

Sarah is a lifelong proponent of community service and has dedicated many years to service organizations and community
groups, including as a board member of the Fairplex Child Development Center. Art joined the Los Angeles County Fair
Association in 1999, and was named a director in 2002. A longtime resident of the San Gabriel Valley, he has devoted
tremendous time and energy to educational, medical and recreational endeavors in his community. He is retired from Rain
Bird Corporation after years of service as Chief Financial Officer. He is now a director emeritus.

The Ludwicks have been involved with the annual auction at the CDC since it began in 1991. It’s hard to imagine what a CDC
Auction would be without their enthusiastic and whole-hearted participation. They are also major donors to TLC, having
made several generous contributions throughout the years.

In 2017, the Ludwicks retired from their years of service with Fairplex. The Learning Centers is proud of its association with
Art and Sarah Ludwick and salutes them for their dedication and participation with heartfelt admiration and appreciation.
Art is fond of saying that he and Sarah have a love affair with the Fair, and for that we’re very grateful.

TLC HISTORY AT A GLANCE

Education has been a commitment of Fairplex since its inception in 1922;
programs have evolved and thrived resulting in an impressive and enduring
educational legacy for the surrounding communities, which represent one
of the most populous, ethnically and socio-economically diverse areas in
the United States. In 1998, Fairplex established the Foundations at Fairplex
and, in 2010, they evolved into The Learning Centers at Fairplex (TLC), a
nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, uniquely positioned to provide a host of
educational programs at Fairplex. By complementing existing businesses
and activities on the 487-acre Fairplex campus (home to the LA County Fair
and 500 year-round events), TLC’s unique programs offer participants relevant
opportunities, from early childhood education to adult learning.

TLC is a nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.
Funds to support programs of TLC are received from individual donations,
special events and grants from private foundations, corporations and
government entities. Fairplex provides funding for administrative expenses so
that every dollar donated goes directly to support program delivery and makes
an immediate impact on our students.

Programs of The Learning Centers include: the Child Development Center,
Career and Technical Education Center, FairKids Field Trip Program, Millard
Sheets Art Center, the Junior Fair Board Leadership Program and The Farm
at Fairplex for field trips, educator workshops and more.
Additional programs are supported by the Volunteer Ambassador Program.
