PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE 01 Message From The Principal’s Desk Dear teachers, students and parents, Schooling is the first contact with the world. Our Alma mater is one of the leading schools in Nugegoda. To commemorate the 108th birthday of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya, we are proudly launching an e-magazine for the first time in our school history. You all can be aware of all the events happening in the school through this e-magazine. It is worth giving this opportunity for you to step into the new world. The year 2023 will be the shining period of our Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya. We are hoping to have many events to show the talents of our Samudradevians. This will help you to express your creativity when you continue this every three months. I specially appreciate the teachers and the students who work hard to make this effort a success. I am sure this 108th birthday will be an unforgettable moment for every one due to this emagazine. MESSAGE FROM THE ICT SECTION 02 “Building a future with technology for a better life full of simplicity” We feel that Sri Lankan students have to keep abreast of all the technological developments that are evolving rapidly. The ICT section of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya aims to give a vast knowledge of Information Communication Technology which will enable them to cope up with new technological trends in the world. We strongly believe that we should prepare our students to face challenge that they come across in the technological era. They should be intelligent enough to apply the new technological properties such as Artificial Intelligence, 5G proliferation and Quantum Computing that the most technologically advanced countries use. The purpose of launching the e-magazine SAMUDRIANA is to give all the updates related to school events. This will be a medium that many will use to get recent updates of our school community. We strongly felt the need of launching this e-magazine for the 1 st time in school history as our students will be living in a technologically advanced era and they’ll definitely have to be on par with the new technology that the whole world use. Finally we take this opportunity to wish all our students to have the strength that they need to face any obstacle that they come across in this complex world to lead a comfortable life full of simplicity. OUR SCHOOL It was Rs.562.30. When Mrs. A, Palmer Caldera held the position and it was taken over by Mrs. E. Buljans in 1922. With the help of the church she was able to put up a building for the primary section. At this time the highest grade was grade 8. Five students sat for the E.S.L.C. examination and four were able to obtain first classes. Nealin Munasinghe who obtained the best results was given a gold sovereign and a certificate by the Superintendent of Police Mr. Dowbigin. With the retirement of Fr. Ramanayake on 15th of June 1930 his position was filled by Fr. P.E.Wickramasinghe. With the retirement of Mrs. Buljan’s, Mrs. E.E. Oldens who was a senior teacher became the Principal. During her 24 years of service time, there was a rapid progress in education as well as the physical resources. With the help of her husband, Mr. Oldens, built a permanent single storey building replacing the old temporary building. Today it is the building with the main hall. The number of students was increased and the school was promoted to a senior secondary school in 1932. Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya is a public girls' school located in Nugegoda, Sri Lanka. It was founded on 5th of May 1915 and is considered as the oldest girls' school in Nugegoda. Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya was started as St John’s mixed school with 14 pupils On May 5th in 1915. Initially it was a Christian Missionary school and the first principal of the school was Rev. Fr. James Henry Wickramanayake. The first prize giving was held on 6th of October 1967. The year 1919 was special as two important changes took place. Fr.J.H.Wickramanayake was transferred to Baddegama and Rev. Fr.J.P Ramanayake took over this position. At the same time Mrs. M. S. Labroy was appointed as the New principal. Fr. Ramanayake was able to get a donation for the school from the government for the first time. In 1934, the mixed school was separated into two Girls' and Boys' schools. The girls' school was named as St. John's Girls' School and the boys' school was named as St. John’s Boys' school. The schools were under the church of St. Mary's . The girls' school had both English and Sinhala medium classes. There was a Tamil stream, but the classes were initially at the boys' school and then transferred to a building adjacent to the Church. It became a separate school and It was called the “Tamil Maha Vidyalaya”. In 1963, under the government re-organization programme of schools, All English medium classes were transferred to St. Joseph's Convent. On the 1st of April 1965, St. John’s girls' school was renamed as Samudradevi Balika Maha Vidyalaya, 03
EXCELLENCE OF 108 YEARS Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya is a public girls’ school located in Nugegoda, Sri Lanka, with a long history extending up to the beginning of the 20th century. The school was named as St. John’s mixed school at the time it was founded and later changed its name as Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya. The school was started with only 14 students and gradually it was increased upto about 3000 students. Initially, it was a Christian Missionary school but now it is a multi-religious organization. The first principal of the school was Rev. Fr. James Henry Wickramanayake, and the present principal is Mrs. Sureka Siriwardana. The school was commenced with only one building and in a limited area but gradually more buildings were added. As time passed, a playground and a science laboratory were also added to school along with some other buildings. In the year 1922 the highest grade to be present was grade 8, gradually it was expanded up to higher grades starting from primary classes. In the year 1940, apart from the main subjects Dancing, Music, English language, Sports, and Guiding were introduced to the curriculum and currently it is broadened up to the education in Science, Mathematics, Commerce, and art streams. The existing extracurricular activities were improved and new activities such as Photographic Society, ICT Society, Girl Guiding etc. were also added. The school Prefects' Guild Consists of senior, junior, and little leaders. Currently the academic staff has been increased up to 126 while the non-academic staff consists of 15 members. Throughout the history of the school, it has gained many achievements academically and in extracurricular activities. It helped to broaden the horizon of the students in many aspects in their lives. 04
The Art Day of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya was held on 21st December 2022 at the school auditorium under the guidance of our madam principal For this occasion, Mr.Jayantha Chandrasiri veteran Artist, Popular film and Teledrama Director and Mrs. Methsila Rathnayake participated as the chief guests. Our madam principal Mrs.Sureka Siriwardena who was the pillar of strength of this event continuously guided us was there to great the ocassion. RAWANABHIMANA'22 Ceremonies The Art day was able to bring enjoyment and entertainment to the students by the brilliant performances displayed by the students of our school. Also, as the event was aired on television, it was a great opportunity to the students to showcase their talents to the world. 05
INTER HOUSE SPORTSMEET AND AWARDING CEREMONY Inter House Sportsmeet was held on 31st of March 2023 at Ananda Shasthrala Ground, Beddagana. INNOTRAN 22' The school’s Commerce Day was held under the patronage and leadership of the school principal Mrs. Sureka Siriwardana on 11th November, 2022 at the school main hall. For this occasion, Professor of University of Jayawardhanapura Aruna Shantha Gamage graced the occasion. The Inter House Sports Meet was held on 31st of March 2023 at Ananda Shasthrala Ground, Beddagana. The District Secretary, Colombo Mr. Pradeep Yasarathna and Mrs. N.K. Ekanayake, The Zonal Directress of Education, were the of honour. School Principal Mrs. Sureka Siriwardana and Principals of many invited schools also participated in the annual sportsmeet. Mayura house won the championship and Kokila house emerged Runner-up and Hansa won the 3rd place. 06
Grade 5 Scholarship results Compared to 2021, there has been an increase in the number of students who have passed in 2022. In 2020, 2021 and 2022 respectively, 26.05%, 24.08% and 22.07% of students passed the grade 5 scholarship examination. Our heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the principal, teachers and students who dedicated themselves in this achievement. GREAT ACHIEVEMENT at GENERAL EXAMINATIONS CONGRATULATIONS SAMUDRIANS !! Advanced Level Examination results In the year of 10 students of the Commerce stream and 2 students from the ARTs stream achieved 3A's at the G.C.E Advanced Level Examination 2021. 07 This year our school received the Diamond award in the Ordinary Level Examination in Sri Jayawardanapura Zone. We were able to achieve such goals thanks to the great effort made by our dear teachers and our proud Samudrians. EDUCATION Odinary Level Examination results Fourteen students achieved 9A's in the year 2020 at Odinary Level Examinatiion while forty one students got 8A's and 1B. In 2021, fifty students got 9A's and twenty six students' got 8A's and 1B.
ACHIEVEMENTS Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya achieved the highest results at the Ordinary Level examination in 2021 by ranking 1st among top ten best performing schools in Sri Jayawardenapura Zone. Desandi Yuhansa won the 2nd place of Abacus International Olympiad Competition 2022. Senior English Drama won the 3rd place in the English Language and Drama Competition. 08 School Orchestra won the 1st place in Zonal Music Competition 2022. Classical solo singing team of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya won the 1st place in the All Island Eastern Music competition and 1st place in Classical Singing at the Zonal Music Competition 2022.
The extracurricular activities direct students to improve their social skills, leadership skills and self esteem. By engaging in these type of activities help the students to meet their interests beyond the classroom. These extracurricular activities comes under different fields such as Intellectual, Religious, Technology, Cultural, Academic, Military, Performing Arts, Voluntary activities and Arts.Students can find their true abilities and talents by participating in these activities which demonstrate the importance of community involvement which helps them to be both academically successful and develop socially. Beyond the classroom EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 09 Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities during their time at school: from Sports, Clubs & Societies, Music, Dancing and Drama to personal development and community service programs. There are a whole range of benefits that come from involvement in these programs. In addition to building skills within a specific discipline, extracurricular activities are great for developing general academic and soft skills. Eg: debating for public speaking, academic competitions for exam strategies and sport for teamwork. Balancing a number of commitments can help to improve student’s time management skills, leadership skills while finding an area they enjoy or excel at can lift their self-confidence. While students usually have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of study areas through core subjects, extracurricular activities allow students to explore an interest in more depth than what is covered in class or maybe even find a completely new interest that they wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. They can also provide a great chance for students to broaden their perspective of the world, particularly those who involve in volunteering and community service programs.

School organizes various religious activities on monthly basis and on special religious events. Main events that our school holds are; ' Seela Samadhana' on Poson poya, 'Dhamma Deshana' programs for Vesak Poya and ' Pera Poya' program. Also, during the Coronavirus pandemic, the school organized online events for Vesak and Poson Poya days such as Dramas, Lantern and Bakthi Gee shows. These events help not only the students' and also to uplift the teachers' mental well-being. 1 0

Wathsala is the teacher in-charge of the Junior Eastern Band. Primary Western Band Mrs. C. N. Dileesheya Rupasinghe is the teacher in-charge of the Junior Western Band. Senior Eastern Band Mrs. Manori Balasooriya is the teacher in-charge of Senior Eastern Band. Senior Cadet Band Mrs. Rasika Pieris is the teacher in-charge of the Senior Cadet Band
S P O R T S SAMUDRADEVI BALIKA VIDYALAYA PROVIDES FOLLOWING INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPORTS FACILITIES WITH PROPER AND EXPERT GUIDANCE FOR HER FELLOW STUDENTS. Sport is a physical activity that entertains and provides enjoyment. It helps in the development of the mental, physical as well as emotional attributes of a person. It develops qualities of hard work, teamwork, confidence, unity, trust and team spirit. It can be indoor or outdoor activities. Sports are a mandatory part of the school curriculum for the development of the students. The objective of dving Games and Sports is the enrichment of the school experience of students within the context of the educational mission. As such, school sports are educational and contribute to the overall education of all students. Other objectives of school sports logically follow from the educational mission: Citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, teamwork, respect, and health and welfare of all students not only during the school years but continuing into adulthood. 12
4th Asian Youth Athletic Championship 2022 High jump 8th place at Sir John Tarbets Senior Athletic Championship 2022 High jump 1st place at National Schools’ sport championship 2022 (Western Province Games) High jump 1st place at All island tournament under 18 years. High jump tournament 1 st place Achievements of School in past year Our school won Sri Lanka Junior Gymnastics Championship 2022 champion under 13 girls gold medal for all four events. 13 These achievements were made by our sister Sithuli Sadithya who brought such greatness to our school.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Susil Premajayantha, spearheaded the main programme to launch an activity-based oral English Language programme for Grade 1 students. It was held at Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya Primary Section, Gangodawila. Western Province Governor Roshan Gunathilake, Western Province Chief Secretary Pradeep Yasaratne and other officials were also present on the occasion. Speaking at the event, the Minister said that 13,800 teachers have already been trained for this purpose and that it is his hope to give students the opportunity to use the English language from their first day of school without any inhibition SPECIAL EVENTS Under the guidance of the principal, various programs were organized for the development of the leadership qualities of the school students as well as for the development of the school. ENGLISH WEEK The English Week of our school was held to encourage the students to use English language to use in day-to day activities and to interact with people. It was held on 24th, 25th and 26th August, 2022. Simultaneously, a fancy dress competition, a poster competition and a food festival were also held during the English week. 14 National Program to Introduce English Language to Grade 1 was held on 30th of March 2023 at Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya. 15 PREFECT LEADERSHIP CAMP A leadership development camp for prefects was held for two days on February, 2023. The objective of the camp was to develop talents and improve self-esteem and leadership skills. They engaged in many fun and physical activities. BUTTERFLY Investiture Ceremony LEADER'S FIRE '23 The Butterfly Activities fall under the themes of LOOK, LEARN , LAUGH and LOVE. The motto of the butterflies is ''BE HAPPY'' "BUTTERFLY" is a branch of the Sri lanka Girl's Guiden Association.It was officially inagurated at th the primary. Many sisters from grade 1-3 enrolled in this morement.
GREEN SAMUDRA Under the guidance of the school principal Mrs. Sureka Siriwardana, the students have started a model farm in the school premises. Students were able to learn and engage and in physical activities, teamwork which encourage them to improve their self-confidence, sense of responsibility, communication skills and leadership skills along with the knowledge about environmental awareness and healthy lifestyles. JUNIOR SCIENCE LABORATARY OPENING On 28th of March 2023, a modern laboratory was inaugurated in the junior section of the school. The Minister of Education, Dr. Susil Premajayantha was the Chief Guest at the occasion to declare open the laboratory of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya, Nugegoda. Member of Parliament Mr. Madhura Vithanage and Principal Mrs. Surekha Siriwardana were also present on the occasion. 16

A COMPUTER IS A DEVICE THAT STORES AND PROCESSES INFORMATION ACCORDING TO A SET OF INSTRUCTIONS.IT WAS INVENTED BY CHARLES BABBAGE WHO IS CONSIDERED AS THE "FATHER OF COMPUTER". INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ( ICT ) IS AN EXTENSIONAL TERM FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY( IT)THAT STRESSES THE ROLE OF UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS AND THE INTEGRATION OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS (TELEPHONE LINES AND WIRELESS SIGNALS ) AND COMPUTERS , AS WELL AS NECESSARY ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE , MIDDLEWARE , STORAGE AND AUDIOVISUAL , THAT ENABLE USERS TO ACCESS , STORE , TRANSMIT , UNDERSTAND AND MANIPULATE INFORMATION. ICT IS ALSO USED TO REFER TO THE CONVERGENCE OF AUDIOVISUAL AND TELEPHONE NETWORKS WITH COMPUTER NETWORKS THROUGH A SINGLE CABLING OR LINK USING A SINGLE UNIFIED SYSTEM OF CABLING , SYSTEM. THERE ARE LARGE ECONOMIC INCENTIVES TO MERGE THE TELEPHONE NETWORK WITH THE COMPUTER NETWORK SYSTEM. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
ICT Society helps students to understand how technology evolves around their day-to-day lives and how to work with technology. ICT Society directs the students to become competent and confident by giving them knowledge about the modern technology which is important for the future development of the world. Students will be encouraged to apply the technology by learning basic programming, modeling and software applications which will be useful for the future society.
