Volume 16, Issue 2
Editor’s Note
And the goodbyes keep on rolling! In this issue we
bid farewell and best of luck to Tamara Trujillo and
Fred Batt as they retire and head of to tackle their
respective future endeavors. Fortunately, they leave
behind many fond memories and fine accomplish-
ments.
We also want to take a moment up front to give a
big thank you to Julie Thomas for being such a won-
derful and consistent contributor to Floor 2 Floor. We
know everybody is busy, but neither understaffing
nor sickness, nor vacation keeps Julie from getting us
wonderful Archival Gems! Thanks, Julie!
When I Think of Tamara
Fred Batt, Soon-to-be-Retired Librarian
When I think of Tamara, I think of essentially sharing a life (with its ups and down under many Deans) for over two decades. I think of
the times that we agreed (that was fun) and we disagreed (can’t always agree, right?). I think of the periods when she was Acting
Dean when I truly thought that she did a marvelous job keeping many balls in the air. She didn’t settle for the status quo, rather she
made certain that things in the Library moved in a logical and constructive direction. I think of how professionally and competently she
handled major projects and emergencies. I marveled at her energy level.
When I think of Tamara, I think of someone who is driven and focused. She’s someone with a passion for following what she believes is
the best road to take. At the same time she has a sense of humor. I’ve seen her laugh until she was red in the face -- and I enjoyed
witnessing those moments.
When I think of Tamara I also think of someone with grace, excellent taste and sensitivity. I think of the ladybug that was “saved,”
i.e., taken from a 5th floor window to an outside location. I think of all of the animals that have been rescued by her (she seems to
show up in the right place at the right time) -- too numerous to even recall. Once a dog on the highway ended up in her car -- long
story. Speaking of her car, I still cannot envision commuting daily from Berkeley but she has pulled it off for over two decades.
Decades ago I remember her telling me I should have a cat (can’t recall what led to that advice -- perhaps one needed a home). I
essentially said, “No Way in H***. I don’t like cats!” About a decade later I’m up to my ears in cats. I got Abby (now with my son)
after cat-sitting Gary (now with one of my daughters) and then saved Max and Mia (still with us and driving us crazy). Somehow I
BLAME TAMARA!
When I think of Tamara, I think of someone who works harder and with more care and concern than anyone that I know. I think of
someone who did a marvelous job flipping into a completely new type of position (reference) and did it effectively and with a
smile. She is quick to collaborate with others, ask questions and volunteer to help out. I give her tons of credit for her approach to the
last couple of years. She is one classy lady! I wish her well in her future endeavors and eventual retirement. IT HAS BEEN FUN!

Cruise On, Swing On, Play On, Fred
Tamara Frost Trujillo, Soon-to-be Library Director
The careers and work of Fred Batt and myself have been closely intertwined at Sac State Library for almost 23 years.
Fred joined the University Library as Associate Dean for Public Services in September of 1988, and I began as the Associ-
ate Dean for Technical Services & Systems in November of 1988. We worked together as the two associate deans for
20 years with and for four library deans. For all 20 years our offices were one door apart! In 2009 I once again fol-
lowed Fred, this time into the Reference Department, where we have worked together since, sometimes sharing joint refer-
ence desk duties. Now we find ourselves retiring from the Library within two weeks of each other. It was not planned this
way, but it feels fitting and proper that it turned out like this.
Fred has probably been the closest colleague I have had during my library career. When one works in parallel positions
as members of a small administrative team there is lots of sharing, candor, differing of opinion, problem solving, and
dealing with good times and bad. Throughout Fred has stayed focused on the main reason the Library is here – to support
the teaching and research mission of the university and to provide as good a public service to our students, faculty and
staff as we possibly can. It has been a priority for him and he has done an excellent job. I feel fortunate to have had
Fred as my administrative counterpart. I will always treasure him as someone I have been able to be candid with, col-
laborate with, and laugh with through many, many projects, events, and assignments. I cherish Fred for the many memories
and history we share and for his willingness to always give his honest perspectives, and his sense of humor.
Beyond his work in the Library, Fred has unbelievable talents – playing piano, bowling, golfing -- and multiple interests –
reading, music, cruising, trying new restaurants. I hope to keep up with Fred as we transition into our next life adventures
and I wish him all the very, very best. I know Fred won’t be bored!

What’s the Buzz All About?
Julie Thomas, Special Collections and University Archives
Everyone knows about Herky the Hornet, but what about the Buzz Club? Formed in 1948, it was the official rally club of
Sacramento State College whose function was to drum up support for the teams in pep rallies and game attendance. An
early member of the Buzz Club was Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson, who opened his first “Shakey’s Pizza” in 1954 on the
corner of 57th Street and J Street in Sacramento and currently has 500 stores globally.
The Buzz Club also sponsored the first Casaba Queen contest in February 1952. The Casaba Queen was queen of the
basketball season and nominees had to be sponsored by an officially recognized SSC student organization, be enrolled
at SSC, and have good academic standing. As a sign of the times, only male students were eligible to vote for the Ca-
saba Queen. In January 1954, the Buzz Club changed its name to the Rally Committee whose membership was based on
participation in student activities, a good GPA, and time available for service projects.
The last mention of the Rally Club was in the April 10, 1970 issue of The State Hornet.

Page 5 Reza Peigahi, Outstanding AGAIN!
Anne Bradley, Reference Department
The Library’s very own Reza Peigahi was recently honored with an Outstanding University Service Award for his extensive
participation in University committees, initiatives, and activities. He was one of many outstanding faculty recognized at a
campus-wide celebration of excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship. The full list of Reza’s campus activities would
fill this page, but some of the highlights include many years service on the Faculty Senate, the General Education &
Graduation Requirements Policy Committee, and the Faculty-Administration Team on Consultation, Shared Governance
and Leadership. Other current work includes academic advising in the Advising Center and leading a group working on
the increasing graduation rates and closing the achievement gap here at Sacramento State. Seriously, I could on all day,
but you get the idea. Reza is a person who not only signs up but he also shows up to get the work done. For that, we, and
the University, thank him from the bottom of our meeting-loving hearts.
