BARONG MASK

WHAT IS BARONG MASK

Barong, masked figure, usually representing an unidentified creature called keket,
who appears at times of celebration in Bali, Indonesia.

For the Balinese, Barong is the symbol of health and good fortune, in opposition to
the witch, Rangda (also known as Calonarang).

During a dance-drama that includes the famous kris (heirloom sword) dance, in
which deeply entranced performers turn swords on themselves but emerge

unharmed, Barong confronts Rangda in magical combat. Barong is brought to life by
two dancers encased in an ornately decorated harness.

From the figure’s mask hangs a beard of human hair decorated with frangipani
flowers, in which the magic power of Barong is thought to reside.

HISTORY

Barong is a panther-like creature and character in the Balinese mythology of Bali, Indonesia.
He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon

queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. The battle
between Barong and Rangda is featured in the Barong dance to represent the eternal battle
between good and evil.In Balinese mythology, the good spirit is identified as Banas Pati Raja.
Banas Pati Raja is the fourth "brother" or spirit child that accompanies a child throughout their
life, which is a similar concept to guardian angels. Banas Pati Raja is the spirit which animates

Barong. A protector spirit, he is often represented as a lion. The Barong is often portrayed
accompanied by two monkeys.

Barong is portrayed as a lion with a red head, covered in white thick fur, and wearing gilded
jewelry adorned with pieces of mirrors. The shape of lion Barong is somewhat similar to a

Pekingese dog. The origins of the Barong are far back in time and quite uncertain. Its origins
could be from animist worship, before Hinduism appeared, when villagers still believed in the

supernatural protective power of animals.

WHAT ARE BARONG MASK USED FOR?

In the past, Barong Mask considered sacred and were
only used in temples during dance perfomances.
The most famous dances in which they use sacred mask
are the Topeng dances and the Barong dances. At these
dances they copy movements from the wayang kulit.
During these dances, the Balinese teach each other epic
stories of their Hindu religion.

WHERE ARE BARONG MASKS MADE ?

Balinese masks are found in almost every temple on the island. But the village
of Mas located south of Ubud is particularly famous. They are known for their
amazing traditional carved masks and other exotic Balinese decorations. The
streets of this little are filled with small art shops and galleries. This is the place
to get the best deal on any mask from Indonesia.

WHO MAKE THE BARONG MASKS ?

Mask carvers are called the Undagi
Tapel. They have to be a member of the

Brahman caste to become one. This
caste is the highest on the island and
the members know the required rituals
involved with making a sacred mask.

TOOLS TO MAKE BARONG MASK

Balinese modern masks, beige Balinese
masks or primitive masks are used over
30 different tools to carve out the wood.
They often use mahogany wood, suar

wood, crocodile wood, sono wood,
hibiscus wood and teak wood.

WHAT DO BARONG MASK SYMBOLIZE ?

The Balinese believe that everything has a soul such
as the rain, the winds, a rock and even the masks.

BARONG MASKS SYMBOLIZE THE SPIRITS
FROM THE ANCESTRAL WORLD.

THROUGH THESE MASKS, SPIRITUAL WORLDS
CAN FIND THEIR WAY TO THE MODERN WAY.

There are purification rituals and blessings for the
dancers before the spirits are called upon. It is
considered very sacred and is a privilege.

HOW A sacred Barong mask can cost hundreds of
MUCH dollars and takes around 4 months to make.
DOES A The sanding process and the materials used

COST ? They mostly used goatskin, buffalo and

horsehair, and boar teeth.
Only natural colors are used with up to 150

coatings.
The carvers uses modern colors and just has

a couple of layers of paint.
We can have a good-looking Barong mask

WHERE TO SEE BARONG MASK ?

In Mas village, visitors can even meet with the
woodcarver who can show his style of work and which

tools and type of wood he uses.

At the Njana Tilem Museum along Jalan Raya Mas,
visitors also can gain some knowledge about various

masks and other pieces of high quality wood
carvings.

Another great place is the Setia Darma House of
Mask and Puppets Southest of Ubud.

Visitors can attend a perfomance to see Barong
masks in action.

Lion barong as banaspati raja means king of the
jungle. It is the symbol of a good spirit, headdress
uses sekar taji made of carved leather, sliced with
prada and added with some small mirror decoration.

TYPES Barong Bangkal is an old pig in Bali and is
OF considered a mythical animal that has strength. It is

Barong Macan shaped like a tiger that lives in in the
forest, its fur resembles a tiger fur made of velvet
fabric. Tigers are famous mythical animals in stories

The shape resembles an elephant from India. Barong
is paraded around the village on Galungan and
Kuningan holidays.

Barong landung has a different form with barongs in Bali.
This barong is not danced by 2 dancers as in general, this
barong manifests like two male and female dolls, which
are called 'Jero Luh' and 'Jero Gede', the form is similar to

Betawi Ondel-ondel.
