“The Whole Purpose of Education is to Turn Mirrors Ms Alice Ong
into Windows” – Sydney Harris
This has been what I have strived for in the last 7
years for the school. Education allows students to
get insights into who they are. Not just students,
teachers as well. It allows them to see their interests,
strengths, weaknesses, and areas to work on. The
inward look allows one to see what or who one is.
This is what a mirror is, a reflection of self. However, it
is important to turn mirrors into windows. When one
can do this, it opens the window to the outside world.
The view that each one has through the window is
different based on his or her own perspective.
Through education one must open himself/herself to
the world to reflect what one processes. Education
allows us to explore the world and enables us to
turn mirrors into windows.
In my time at UIS, I have seen students and teachers who have done this. The impact
their actions have had on our community! This has been very apparent during this
unprecedented time of the COVID 19 pandemic. The support that our students have
given to each other, the support that teachers have given to the students and the
collective support of our community. I cannot be prouder of the UIS Community!
The 2020-2021 Academic Year has been a challenging one. We have spent a significant
amount of time online. The teaching and learning process have continued with teachers
using innovative ways of engaging the students to ensure that learning has taken place.
Many new and interesting projects and assignments emerged as a result of the
innovation. Students worked hard and stayed focused in their classes online. The
several months there we were able to have physical school, students followed the
COVID Protocols and understood that they could not hug or touch their classmates.
Their school day revolved around their classrooms. Socialisation was kept at a distance.
During break and lunch, students’ voices can be heard as they communicate with friends
across the classrooms. For the younger students, school was challenging as they could
not move around as they normally did. However difficult the Academic Year has been, the
students persisted and stayed the course. They can be proud of themselves!
The pandemic caused the cancellation of Sports Day, X-country, International Day,
Charity Fair, CNY Bazaar, and School Production for the second year. Last year we
managed to have a send-off for our graduates and a delayed physical Graduation. This
year one of the events that the students look forward to, School Camps, could not take
place. We are fortunate that in this technological age, we were able to have an Online
Awards Day. We were not able to have one last Academic Year. Congratulations to all
Award Recipients!
Message from the Principal
I would like to congratulate the class of 2019-2020 for the
excellent IGCSE results. This group of students focused and
persisted with all the turmoil the pandemic caused resulting in
no exams, but a rigorous standard required for the grades
obtained. This group of students really set the standard for
their commitment in all their classes and their diligence in their
homework, assessments, and MOCK Exams. 42 students were
in Year 10 and 55% of the students obtained 5 A’s and above. 8
students scored straight A’s which is 19% of the students.
These students are: 7A* 1A Ms Alice Ong

While there were not many opportunities for competitions this Academic Year, some of our
students did participate in the Australian Science Competition and a Writing Competition. The
results have yet to be released. Our students have not been able to participate in the World
Scholar’s Cup as the pandemic have prevented the competition from taking place in Malaysia for
the last 2 seasons. I do hope that this competition can take place in the upcoming year as this is a
great platform for students to challenge themselves academically in an international platform with
an interesting curriculum.
Message from the Principal
In December, some of our Year 10 students Ms. Alice Ong
participated in the Interschool Game Development
Competition and performed very well. The
champions of this competition were Team
Procrastinators from UCSI International School
Subang Jaya consisting of Samual Zuzartee, Lee
Yin Hui, Chan Jer Hoong and Yee Jian Liang. 3rd
place were Team UnderDogs also from UCSI
International School Subang Jaya consisting of
Victor Khoo, Goh Yong Tian, Agha Khan and Andry
Junianto. Team Procrastinators were highlighted by
the judges for their original background using pixel
art and used software to create their own music.
Look out world, these are the game developers of
tomorrow!!
The school has had the opportunity to showcase our students’ abilities through the Virtual
Art Gallery for Primary and Secondary, an Online Talent Show, Dramatic Writing
Competition and Persuasive Writing Competition. The school has amazing talents!
Students, I encourage you to keep growing and keep learning. Do not give up, keep
persisting. “Success is no accident, it is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying,
sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.”
Our UIS Community has stayed strong during this challenging time. Our community is
not limited by space, culture, nationality, or religion. We are made of individuals who
come together with a commitment to do the best that we can. I am thankful for the
support and partnership that the school has received. The appreciation and
acknowledgement from our parents and students have encouraged us to keep working
and give our best to our students. Students, you are all unique and it has been my
pleasure and privilege to have been your Principal. Please continue to Learn Today to
Lead Tomorrow.
It is time for me to end my journey at UCSI International School Subang Jaya. The UIS
teaching team is made up of sZuperheroes in my eyes. These superheroes can inspire
students, can pivot, and adapt to challenging situations, can nurture and mentor
students and have many other amazing attributes that make the team amazing!
Together MY AMAZING UIS TEAM OF TEACHERS have achieved amazing results. I have
teachers who have been with me for up to 6 years. My 7 years at the school have been
wonderful with the support of these superheroes. I leave a school that is stronger and
more dynamic than when I arrived.
“Moving on is a simple thing. What it leaves behind is hard.” Thank you for sharing my
Journey!
Message from the Head of Primary
We have completed this school year under very Ms. Sherry Harb
different and atypical circumstances, I want to extend
our appreciation to the families who have worked
closely and partnered with our staff to provide our
students with opportunities to continue their distance
learning in the comfort and safety of their homes.
We truly could not have achieved our tasks without
the support and dedication of our parents! Our
students have been exposed to various unique
learning opportunities and our hope is that distance
learning has instilled in them the importance of
valuing learning wherever it takes place in life.
Learning is a lifelong skill that needs to happen in any
setting particularly when health and safety is what
concerns our daily living conditions.
During the months of online learning our students were able to attend classes virtually, complete
online projects, attend virtual events such as “The Talent Show”, and take part in online activities
through IPC and ASA. We have seen a lot of our young learners become more independent and
be able to handle technology with little guidance from adults. Their experience and knowledge
have certainly expanded beyond the school books and they have been able to cope with this kind
of learning. Still, encouraging a healthy active lifestyle is important for both physical and mental
wellbeing. Our principal Mrs. Alice has repeated this wise advice several times in her newsletters
and we hope that families will continue to have that in mind.
I also need to thank our teachers and staff for being prompt and efficient in adapting to recurrent
changes. We are fortunate to have such hardworking staff that takes pride in celebrating learning
milestones in our students’ lives. The time, effort and planning that goes into setting up online
classes, making lessons fun and educational, and monitoring students’ progress in all grade
levels are certainly clear evidences of our teachers’ care and dedication.
Towards the end of the year, our primary in-school team will be engaged in the process of
preparing for next year. Many factors must be considered by our classroom teachers and learning
teams when setting up standards and expectations for next year. To honour the integrity of the
learning process, our students will be going through a week of revisiting previous concepts
before beginning new lessons. As educators, this is a very important task – our young learners will
need to adapt back into a classroom learning environment which will require them to focus on
skills that could not be mastered well online. Recognizing this, our teachers will dedicate time to
accommodate your child’s learning needs for next year and help them to also recognize their
abilities and strengths.
Finally. when we recognize and reflect upon the success, achievement and required flexibility and
patience that our staff, parents & students have had to rely on collectively, we realize that
cooperation and communication are integral pillars of our community. As a collaborative team we
value the importance of building strong relationships with home and school and we appreciate
the support that we have received from our families as we embarked on several journeys of
distance learning!
We wish you all a wonderful holiday, keeping health & safety in mind, and we look forward to the
opportunity to be together again when schools reopen.
Message from the Head of Secondary
The 2020/2021 Academic Year… ravaged by lockdowns and
school closures, one after another. Once again, we all have
worked together to show that UCSI is the school that just
will not give up.
After we managed to survive, and even flourish, through 77
days of online school last academic year, we certainly did
not plan or expect to follow that up with another 122 days
of online school this year. However, when faced with a
challenge, the UIS community simply rises up to that
challenge. And that’s what we did, together, yet again.
Mr. Tobin Walrod
The first big “shout out” has to go to our students. They were able to enjoy two seemingly-short,
SoP-regimented, 7-week sessions of physical school, when we could actually see each other in
our school building (through faceshields), but these were followed by long stretches of online
classes. Their adaptability and resiliency in coping with the multiple lockdowns and still
maintaining their studies and their work ethic has been nothing short of phenomenal. And that
extends to the parents and the whole community.
nd the fact that the combination of the students, school leadership, and incredible team of
teachers were able to complete the full academic year, all necessary curricula and exams,
including Semester, Checkpoint, and even IGCSE, is simply amazing.
And we didn’t even stop there. We forged ahead and continued to foster inspirational,
educational, and groundbreaking new projects, such as the:
· Virtual Art Gallery
· Online Talent Show
· Dramatic Writing Contest
· Empathy Essay Competition
All of the above were bound together by the Daily Updates from Ms Alice, the Weekly Tips from
our Counsellors, and the Monthly Newsletters from the Academic Coordinator (Ms Meha) and
many other contributors.
These accomplishments are just not possible without incredible teamwork and an amazing UIS
community. Congratulations, students, and the entire UIS Community, for surviving and thriving
despite the conditions of the 2020/2021 Academic Year. A remarkable feat. You deserve to be
proud.
