Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory
Become part of the Observatory
Since it was set up in 1953, BBFO has studied and reported on all aspects of natural history on Bardsey
and continues to do so today. It offers comfortable accommodation at a very affordable price, as well as
providing opportunities for research into the island’s natural history, spirituality and general history.
The continuing work of the Observatory is made possible, in part, by the support of our members, ‘the
Friends of Bardsey’. If you would like to become a member of the Observatory you can complete the
form inside or visit our website for further details. Each member receives a copy of the annual report
(detailing the work and findings of the Observatory during the previous year), a newsletter (The Bardsey
Beacon) three times a year, and is entitled to attend and vote at the Annual General Meeting of the
Observatory. For any further details on the island or the Observatory visit the website or write to the
Warden at Cristin, Bardsey Island, Pwllheli, Gwynedd, Wales, LL53 8DE.
Staying at the Observatory
The Observatory is open from March to November. It is roughly situated in the centre of the island in
the 150-year-old detached farmhouse of ‘Cristin’. Up to 12 guests can be accommodated in the six
comfortable bedrooms. Single, double/family and four bedded rooms are available. Individuals and
small groups will normally bring their own food and cooking facilities are available in the modern, fully
equipped kitchen. Catering can be arranged for an additional fee for groups of eight or more. There is a
large communal dining room overlooking the sea, a comfortable lounge and a well-equipped library.
The buildings are centrally heated and a generator provides electricity and lighting. Full details are
available on the website and are sent out when bookings have been confirmed. Travel to the island is
provided on-board the MV Benlli III, a fully licensed, twin-hulled passenger vessel, carrying 12
passengers and their baggage. The crossing takes 15 to 20 minutes from Porth Meudwy, Aberdaron.
Bookings are normally taken on a weekly basis from Saturday to Saturday (weather permitting). Shorter
stays may be available upon request.
