Staying Information 2023

Staying Information 2023

Important information about your stay

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Bardsey Lodge

Boat Crossing

Skipper: Colin Evans
Tel - 07971 769895

The boat leaves from Porth Meudwy (pronounced Maydwee),
Aberdaron, on Benlli III, a 12-passenger catamaran. The journey
takes about twenty minutes.

Please ring Colin between 6 & 8 pm the evening before you are
due to sail, for a message giving the time of your departure from
Cwrt (pronounced Court) Farm, this varies and can be as early
as 8 am. The times given for the boat crossings are not
transferable, you will generally not be able to catch an earlier
or later crossing. Occasionally there may be a delay due to
weather conditions, if so you will be given instructions regarding
further crossing times. Please note that Colin is very experienced
and fully understands the tides, currents and winds of the
Bardsey Sound and his decision regarding the crossing is final.

What to bring

□ Waterproofs for the boat trip
□ Warm clothing, hats and gloves, thermals at the start and end of the season!
□ Wellies, walking boots and indoor shoes or slippers

bed and one single bed, all other rooms have single beds. Duvets, blankets and pillows are provided

bring them along
□ Food - Sugar for tea and coffee, vegetable oil, salt and pepper and a range of herbs and spices are

supplied free by the Observatory. There are cookies and dressed crabs for sale at the Obs, and
lobsters, fresh vegetables and eggs may be purchased from the farm - ring Gareth or Meriel on 07535
064943 for details of availability. There is limited fridge space and a small amount of freezer space so
bring long-life milk and bread mixes etc. rather than fresh if you are staying for more than 1 week.
Many visitors find it helpful to create a menu for the week and bring food accordingly, please allow
extra in case of delays!

Luggage

All belongings including hand luggage must be clearly labelled with ‘YOUR NAME’ and 'OBS' (e.g. permanent
marker on a strip of parcel tape) - unmarked luggage may be delayed or go astray. Please bring food in
sturdy plastic boxes instead of cardboard and remove as much packaging as possible from food before
travelling. We advise you to remove any plastic packaging from fruit and vegetables in particular otherwise
they sweat and decay rapidly, wrap in newspaper instead. All rubbish must be removed from the island: on
departure please take your glass jars/bottles home with you for recycling; tins, paper, plastic etc. will be
bagged up for you to take to the recycle bins at Cwrt Farm.

It would be much appreciated if able-bodied visitors could help with moving luggage on and off the boat
and trailers at either end of the journey.

If you have space in your vehicle and would be willing to help with bringing supplies for the staff, please
contact [email protected] or call Steve on 07855 264151.

Directions

Departure is from Cwrt Farm, Uwchmynydd (pronounced Youcminith), Aberdaron, LL53 8DA

It is essential that you are at Cwrt Farm before the time specified, to allow for luggage transfer.

From Pwllheli, take the B4413 to Aberdaron, then turn right over the first bridge, signposted ‘Porthor, Whistling
Sands 2 miles’. Climb steeply out of the village, passing a delimit sign and lay-by on your left. After about ½
mile turn left at the crossroads signposted ‘Uwchmynydd 1 mile’. After 200 yards turn left, signposted to Tir
Glyn Caravan Site, and Cwrt Farm is a little way down on your right. If using Sat Nav, you reach Cwrt Farm
approximately ½ mile before the final destination for this post code.

Parking

To park your car, drive through the first gateway into Cwrt
Farm, go past the house on your right, and turn right into the
field just behind the house. Your luggage will be collected
from here for transport to the boat. Payment of £15 per car
per week for parking is paid at the Lodge on the island.

Getting to the boat

There is a 10-minute walk (about ½ mile) from the car park to
the boat. Turn right out of the farm gate, then take the first left
through the stone gateway signposted to Porth Meudwy, go
through the kissing gate and follow the track down to the sea.

If you have mobility problems please contact Colin and
arrangements can be made to transport you to the boat.

Travelling by public transport

If you are travelling by public transport you will probably need to keep your luggage to a minimum, therefore
we have a limited food store at the Lodge for this purpose. Also, it may be possible to organise for some extra
supplies to be delivered, please contact the warden a month or so before your stay for assistance with this.

Medicines

If you have any medical conditions you should ensure that you bring enough supplies of your correct
medications, along with instructions of dose or a repeat prescription form, to cover the length of your stay
plus an extra week in case of delays.

Electricity

Since 2021 we have had solar power which will provide a limited supply of electricity for charging phones and
laptops, cameras etc. This can also be used for C-pap machines overnight.

Water

Water is a precious resource on Bardsey and depending on the weather during the season, it can sometimes
be in very short supply; if this is the case you will be advised to bring drinking water. Please ensure that you
bring enough clothes to last for your entire stay to avoid having to do any washing.

Insurance

We strongly advise all our guests to insure against cancellation or delays by inclement weather. If you have
to cancel your visit for any reason, please let the Bookings Administrator know as soon as possible.

Finally

I would remind you to contact Colin on the Friday evening before your planned crossing in order that
everything can be properly co-ordinated. In conclusion I would like to wish you a very happy and enjoyable
stay on Bardsey.
