going strong.

Sheryl Spiller, Director, County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social
Services (DPSS), was the keynote speaker to a large crowd of Eligibility Operations
staff as well as FRC Management, Chiefs and RGMs across the regions.

When Ms. Spiller started her career the average cost of a new house was
$14,250, gas was 33 cents a gallon, minimum wage was $1.40 and you could
purchase a brand-new car for $2,750. Times sure have changed.

What hasn’t changed is Ms. Spiller’s commitment to the people she serves.
Beginning her career right out of high school as a clerk typist, Ms. Spiller rose
through the ranks to her current role as the Director of DPSS, with her focus
always on being her best and expecting the best of everyone around her.

Ms. Spiller’s belief has always been to implement any new reforms, which help improve service delivery, promote
program integrity, reduce operating costs and make the best use of staff time, they need to utilize innovative
technologies that are integrated into daily operations.

Ms. Spiller understands that the compassion and dedication of her staff are reflected in the quality of service they provide
participants. This level of service excellence could not be achieved without the daily contributions within the department
that she leads. She focuses on working together to align efforts to achieve better outcomes that directly benefit the
residents. Her philosophy can be found in one of her favorite songs by Whitney Houston, “One Moment in Time,” “Each
day I live, I want to be, a day to give the best of me. I’m only one, but not alone. My finest day is yet unknown.”

CALFRESH OUTREACH:

The number of packets: 73,352

The number of our outreach project CalFresh packets
mailed out in 2016. These special packets were mailed
to families and adults who applied for Medi-Cal online
but were not receiving CalFresh. Most families that
qualify for the Medi-Cal program also meet eligibility
criteria for CalFresh. These efforts resulted in the
approval of over 4,053 CalFresh applications. That
translates to families and adults who will be putting
nutritious food on their tables with the help of CalFresh.

Outreach at Northgate Market on 43rd St.

Our efforts to reach more members of our community were
evident with our first outreach visit to Northgate Market.
Setting up our CalFresh table at this popular market created
a great opportunity to share information with interested
shoppers. Several shoppers (not pictured) stopped at our
table to ask about CalFresh and pick up flyers. Although this
was our first event at Northgate, it sure won’t be our last!

IMPERIAL BEACH/FOOD DISTRIBUTION EVENT

On February 7 and 14 in Imperial Beach, the
Chula Vista FRC was invited to provide outreach
material and CalFresh applications for local
citizens at the Imperial Beach United Methodist
Church to help spread the word about potential
programs our customers might be eligible to.

NORMAN PARK HEALTH FAIR

The Chula Vista FRC participated in a health fair that was coordinated by the Chula Vista Community Collaborative and the City of Chula Vista on
January 25. During the Fair, County staff were able to provide outreach material and assist customers in questions regarding assistance programs.
