Thacker raised the point that since Indian minds are versatile,
keeping any one section, such as owners, at the core could be a
challenge. Bakaya’s advice to this was to adapt, increase one’s
versatility and speak the same language. “This advice holds over the
years when even as owners have matured and younger generations

“The ‘think big’ or experiment mind-set is not in yet,” he observed.
Every untapped area is a new avenue of growth, he felt and cited the
example of the food and beverage sector where hotels lag behind the

cost of land and access to capital remain the two timeless challenges

Asserting that he is unsure as to why such aspects are not

everyone talks about, but no one cares”.

The reason behind this, he says, is that the impact of the
tourism industry is not visible on surface as most of its effects
happen as a ripple.

However, he also shared that he believes there are optimistic
signs now for the industry. This, he said, comes from a few things
he has noticed. “One is that the states have been brought into the
picture and told to do their part. Then, the Government is talking
about a National Tourism Authority and a National Tourism Board. If
this happens with the right perspective, they would have a big role in

of 6000 ADR is likely to be achieved. “Though during and post-

but it will be interesting to see where we are headed to from here,”
the panel opined.

India has been one of the most digitally advanced nation
in terms of digital tools being used for planning, booking and
experiencing a journey. India’s rising middle-class and increasing
disposable income has supported the growth of domestic and
outbound tourism, they added. And that there has have been a
number of changes in the minds of the travellers as the purpose
of travelling has drifted from the usual official and holiday purpose
to leisure stays. The panellists also opined that the pandemic has
been an enabler to many new segments within the hotel industry
such as staycations, weekend gateways, homestays with friends
and families to create memories. “While the pandemic imposed a
lock on few businesses, it also gave rise to a few new ones. It is here
to stay and grow for long,” said Khosla.

The discussion led to a collaborative conclusion among the
panellists that leisure stays, weekend getaways and homestays will
garner more attention in days to come. However, they felt domestic
travel may get affected to an extent with people opting to travel to
shores but added that these new segments will play a pivotal role in
generating revenues from domestic travellers. “Talking about short-
term scenario (six-12 months), we can expect the hotel prices to
go up as there has been sudden surge of domestic inclusion in the
name of weekend gateways and staycations,” felt Saxena.

While Anuraag Bhatnagar said that their price point acted as
a good filter for them to refrain from such revenue models and they
are not in favour of promoting short stay business as they don’t see
it as an apt revenue management extension, Sudeep Jain stood in
its favour. “Honestly, we do offer a four-hour stay but that is strictly
for travelling passengers near the airport whose flights have been
delayed by a few hours,” he said.

continue and talked about plans of building on the F&B experience
and expanding to leisure destinations in India including Tier III and
IV cities at the mid- and upper-mid segment.

Talking about how business hotels faced massive challenge
with quarantine and travel restrictions in place, Vineet Verma
lamented that the “pandemic has been most hostile to the most
hospitable sector” in light of hotels being temporarily shut down.
While comparing monthly performance numbers to pre-pandemic
figures, he shared on witnessing a significant increase lately,
adding the biggest lesson was of “learning to do more with less”.
While earlier the hotel’s focus had been split to 60 per cent on the
top line and 40 per cent on the bottom line, the situation is just the
opposite now. “We have to be mindful of the costs and optimising
expenses, especially now with fewer people opting for a career in
the hospitality industry,” he added.

Ranjit Batra echoed Verma’s sentiment. “How I wish we
were in leisure marketing?” he opined, adding that this has been
a great learning opportunity for most, especially ones looking to
expand their businesses. Among the learnings, Batra shared, “We
have become more responsible and super-efficient as owners and
operators. Panchshil Realty is currently focussing on mixed-use
hotels, fractional ownership and residential hotel combinations
with special attention to the leisure segment.”

Leisure Hotels Group, a business built on domestic leisure
travel, in Vibhas Prasad’s words witnessed, “historic highs in
business” during the pandemic. After an initial drop in first three
months, business picked up rapidly. Despite this, Prasad said he
was cautious about the trends they have witnessed, adding that he

To throw light on the subject, Jatin Khanna, said, “The

Sustainable hotels look at eco-friendly construction, energy saving

and perform better at each stage.
MANTRA FOR SUCCESS
Leadership is the outcome of commitment, character,
compassion, competence, candour and, above all,
integrity. These values compiled together form the mantra
to become a successful hotelier and a purposeful leader.
FUTURE PLANS
Being a hotelier for 27 years, I’ve never ventured out of
this industry. My future plan is to work and be part of
this hospitality industry and take on a leadership role
in sizeable inventory hotels. I’d also like to work on
sustainable models of business so that it is not only good
for the industry, but the community at large. Since this
industry generates a big chunk of employment, I would
like to contribute in better ways and means of work and
culture. This is one aspect that according to me needs a
lot of refinement for the future of this industry.

MANTRA FOR SUCCESS
I would be lying if I said I became a successful hotelier on
my own. My team and I’ve worked tirelessly to improve
the experience for our guests. After the recovery from the
pandemic, we have worked to bring back staff as employee
retention was an issue. I think our training programmes
helped us improve on our weaknesses and increased guest
satisfaction rate along with reduction in average number of
complaints.
FUTURE PLANS
My team and I would keep working on what we are doing.
Our goal is to provide the best possible experience to
guests. This award reflects we have served our customers
well in the past and we will continue providing them with

THE TIMING of the award couldn’t have been better.

The last two years have been terrible for the industry and
it took a lot of effort aligning teams to power through the
storm. So after managing to successfully get past these
turbulent times, this award really means a lot to me.
This award shows that we are in the right direction as a
team and I dedicate this to all stakeholders, including the
ownership, colleagues and our partners.

MANTRA FOR SUCCESS
Patience is the key, along with dedication and hard work.
The travel and hospitality industry is one of the most
challenging places to work in but loving what you do and
having a real passion for service and guest satisfaction
will help you go a long way. Taking interest in all hotel
operations including the not-so-glamorous parts and
having an appetite for managing unexpected situations will
help every hotelier in his or her career.

FUTURE PLANS
For now, just taking it one day at a time. Moving forward,
the idea is to keep the momentum going and ensure we
maintain high service standards and guest satisfaction.
Long term, I plan to add sustainability into every process.
