Summer calls for road trips and tons of time on the

you don’t really want to lug around a bottle of
nail polish remover with you. That’s why portable
polish remover wipes, like Topshop Make Up’s Nail

good idea to travel with nude nail colors because
colored polish, if chipped, shows up

with nude tones will keep you
looking fresh and put together.
Finally, for those times when you just cannot stand the thought
of throwing your hair back in a ponytail and don’t have time
for a wash, but still need to spruce up your locks - spritz a
little dry shampoo like Paul Mitchell Dry Wash on your roots
to reveal grease-free, textured locks.

All in a day’s work for New Orleans Songbird, Robin Barnes. Wow, right? I was
exhausted when she decided to go to CrossFit after her 6:30am hour training class!
When we were trying to decide who to put on the cover this month, Robin popped
into my head. She’s not only a very talented jazz singer, but she is devoted to fitness.
She runs, works out, does CrossFit and even started her own line of fitness wear, Fit by
You. I am so very impressed with Robin. She not only has one successful business, but
two! She found a way to bring her passion for singing and fitness together. We felt she
would be perfect for our cover this month.
We wanted to snap a photo of Robin running in one of our local events. She chose to
run in the Fat Boy 5K. Chuck George, from Nolarunning.com, was gracious enough
to allow us to have our photographer at the finish to catch her crossing the finish line.
As I was talking to Chuck about Robin, he quickly grabbed the opportunity to ask if
she would mind singing the National Anthem. Fortunately for everyone who ran the
Fat Boy, Robin agreed. I literally had tears in my eyes as she sang the most beautiful
version. You could hear a pin drop, she was fabulous!
If you haven’t heard Robin sing, make plans to go see her. She plays every Friday at
Hotel Monteleone from 5-8pm and every Friday and Saturday night at the Windsor
Court in the Polo Club Lunge from 9pm-12am. Read all about our local New
Orleans Songbird on page 20.
We are very fortunate that we have so many running events taking place every
weekend. Our running community is getting larger every day. Check our calendar of
events page for all the different runs throughout the area coming up. Also, don’t forget
to register for Bike the Big Easy on October 17th.

JUMP Eating gummy bears after a workout may be just
what the doctor ordered. When you exercise, your
body is fueled by glycogen – the storage form
of glucose – to give you energy needed to push
through those final reps. It’s important to feed
your body to speed up the recovery process and

you should eat gummy bears immediately after
your workout. “Fast-digesting carbs hit your blood
stream quicker, causing insulin to spike. Fast-
digesting carbs are ideal after a workout. That is
one of the main reasons why I recommend opting
for the gummy bears,” Stoppani states.

20 H&FM JULY 2015 ITis one of those late May mornings in New Orleans; the dog
days of summer are on the horizon, but although the heat is
just beginning to bare its teeth, it hasn’t yet begun bite.
Sitting outside CC’s Coffee House on Esplanade, New Orleans native
Robin Barnes, professional jazz singer and founder of Fit By You – her
line of New Orleans-centric fitness clothing - positively vibrates with
enthusiasm without any help from caffeine.
Historically speaking, the life of a working jazz singer is not often known
to lend itself towards a healthy lifestyle, but 27-years-old Barnes looks fit
and strong, and younger than her age. Her dark eyes shine as she talks
about her musical career, and the passion she feels for her latest business
endeavor, Fit By You, glows in her voice like the gathering New Orleans
heat.
Taking her organizer out of her backpack, Barnes lays it open face-up
on the iron table. The white paper pages are dark with ink; each page
crammed so full of appointments that barely any white can be seen.
Obviously Robin Barnes, the Songbird of New Orleans, keeps a busy
schedule. But perhaps this is to be expected; after all, she has been singing
professionally since she was six.
THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
OF MAKING MUSIC
“I sang my first solo in church,” remembered Barnes. “Now I recognize
how I felt then; it was a blissful moment, and I just knew that I wanted to
be a singer. I still feel those same chills every single time I sing.” “And,”
she laughed, “Mom and dad told me they knew that I was going to be a
singer from the moment I was born. They said I had the biggest cry – the
biggest lungs for a little baby!”
Related as she is to distinguished local legend Dave Bartholomew, and
with her family’s band, the Soul Heirs, a well-known addition to the local
music scene, Barnes is familiar with both the “trials and tribulations” that
many professional musicians face, as well as the joy of making music and
doing what you love. “My family didn’t want me to be a musician - they
wanted me to be doctor or a lawyer or anything else,” said Barnes. “You
have to understand the downside. Many musicians don’t have health
insurance; if they get sick they can lose their gigs. My family knew all
about the challenges.”

THE ART OF DOING BUSINESS “It just gets so very hot here,” said Barnes. “So we use a mix of spandex and spun
cotton: all breathable materials. New Orleanians have so much style, so I wanted

bachelor’s degree in business management, and a master’s degree in business
administration, and was ready to give corporate America a try.
“I lasted about four months,” said Barnes. “I could fake it, but I just wasn’t
happy. I saw so many people around me, working 9 to 5, who just didn’t seem to
have a dream. So I quit. I didn’t even have a gig, but I just wasn’t going to not try
to realize my dream.”
Already familiar with the creative side of being a professional musician, Barnes
said her education gave her a business-savvy foundation on which to build her
musical career. It wasn’t long until “small miracles” started to happen, she said,
that included becoming the weekly headliner at the Hotel Monteleone and the
Windsor Court Hotel here in New Orleans; the 2013 release of her successful
EP, Me; and working as a touring musician both in the U.S. and overseas.
WAKE UP CALL
However, it was after once such tour in 2013 that Barnes’ life took a potentially
fatal turn. After returning home from a two weeks in Greece, she suddenly fell
sick with what would prove to be life-altering illness.
“Greece was a fun time, because, like New Orleans, that is the culture there,”
said Barnes. “So it was two weeks with lots of coffee; lots of energy drinks; lots of
drinking and sweets. When I fell sick, I didn’t think too much of it – I thought it
was just jet lag or something. But then I could hardly walk because of the pain in
my side, and my mom forced me to go the ER.”
When Barnes was diagnosed with a rare strain of kidney infection, she was THE PERFECT BALANCE
shocked. “The ER doctor was very positive,” remembered Barnes. “She reassured
me that, because of my general health and age, I would kick that infection’s butt. With her debut solo album Robin on the horizon, Barnes also hopes that she

30 H&FM JULY 2015 Among those without the time or nances to make their
vacation dreams a reality, many are opting for the “staycation,”
a vacation at or nearby home. In fact, the phenomenon has
become so common in recent years that the word itself,
whose rst known use appeared in 2005 and surged during
the economic recession that followed, was recently added to
Merriam-Webster Dictionary. And luckily for New Orleans
area residents, few regions o er the range of opportunities that
sit right here in our backyard.
IN THE CITY
“Last year 9.5 million people visited New Orleans, so we live
in a tourist destination,” said Kristian Sonnier, spokesman for
New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s really an
embarrassment of riches.”
According to Sonnier, the New Orleans metro area o ers more
than 37,000 hotel rooms, including luxury French Quarter
boutiques, charming bed and breakfasts and major hotel
towers. And because the city’s historic landscape naturally
caters to the tourist dollar, local residents can jump right in
and enjoy its countless options. Although the vibrant nightlife
can o er a playground for adults—world-renowned cuisine,
classic cocktail bars, live music clubs, a major casino and
more— it’s easy to forget the city’s family-friendly options.
“You can have family days where dad plays golf, mom relaxes
at the spa, young kids go to the aquarium, the teenagers go
shopping, and everyone’s happy,” Sonnier said.
From historic tours to antique shops, from an insectarium
to riverboat cruises, the city has it all, and locals have the
advantage of choosing dates to suit their wishes depending
on how readily they want to join ranks with actual tourists
on vacation. For those who want to avoid crowds and save
money, July through September are generally lighter months
for out-of-town leisure tourists, allowing easier restaurant
reservations and more a ordable hotel rates. Others may
prefer to staycation during major events like French Quarter
Fest, Essence Fest and Satchmo Summer Fest, or sporting
events at the Superdome and Smoothie King Arena, when
tourism spikes along with the excitement of larger crowds. On
either end of the tourism spectrum, however, the staycationer
bene ts by avoiding the stress, expense and time commitment
of travel. As Sonnier put it, “You can take a great vacation just
staying home, and you can leave all the hassle of packing and
traveling behind.”

Ultimate Pool
interval workout
The summertime in New Orleans can make outside workouts tough. The heat and
humidity send many folks indoors for their workouts. Instead, head to the water to
stay cool, burn some major calories and strengthen and tone your entire body with this
pool interval workout. The water provides continuous resistance throughout the entire
range of motion, burning more calories and engaging more muscle fibers than the same
movements on land. Alternate 3-5 minutes of one of the cardio exercises with 15-30
reps of a strengthening move. Complete this interval workout 3-5 times per week.
Begin with 5-10 minutes of warm up. This can be swimming, jogging in the water,
or any of the cardio exercises that follow.
