MOTO X VOLUME 2 NUMBER 3

MOTO X VOLUME 2 NUMBER 3

Isn't this what
every 2-stroke
motorcycle
owner has been
waiting for - new
performance,
new conveni-
ence? BP has the
answer in a big way. Both answers.
A super 2-stroke oil- and a unique
squeeze pack specially designed for
the simplest, surest, time and
money saving filling up. Just pull
out the spout and squeeze in the oil.
No spilling. No wasting. No left
overs. You get every last drop - all
the oil you pay for. And if you haven't
used all the oil the pack is simply
recapped for further use.
BP Super 2-stroke oil has been de-
veloped specifically for modem 2-stroke
motor cycles - both those with oil-
injection systems and pre-mix systems.
BP Super 2-stroke oil is blended from
high viscosity index base oils. It also
contains special additives to minimise
deposits in the combustion chamber,
plug-fouling, lacquer build-up on piston
skirts, rings and ring grooves, exhaust
port blacking and silencer deposits - as
well as providing corrosion protection
throughout the engine.
All this, BP have squeezed into one
bottle. Go for it.

THE RECEIVING outside to wait a split second later after
the start before gunning it across the

track to nestle in behind the inside rider.

END That way he could have exited the turn in

Now 1 know why Toh's wrench always

had the bike ready to dash across the

room to make at least 60 - 70 per cent of

the track wider, to give the riders a

chance to use their skill in choosing

different lines to pass, and in turn making

it interesting for the spectators.

To see a race long dice in motocross is

rare and exciting but one mustn't always

expect this. This is illustrated by the fact

that the pro will hang back during a race

The second mota saw Horace Bergstrom
manage to fight off Maben right up
until the second last lap when Maben,
who seems to tackle all obstacles with
full confidence and equal amount of
throttle, slipped passed him for his
second win. Martin Jones fought Toby
Venter and Mike O'Connor for third
place which he eventually secured.
Meanwhile the P.A. System had l111-
fortunately taken it upon itself to go to
lunch, leaving the spectators without
commentary for guite a while. This,
coupled with the infernal dust must have
contributed to the apparent lack of
enthusiasm for so many of the spectators.
Fortunately the amplifier was coaxed
back into operation and Roger
McCleery's voice was back on the air
in time for the final Expert Moto.
This one held a surprise. Maben had
complications in the first bend and
emerged at the back of the pack leaving
Toby Venter to take the lead, hounded
after by Martin Jones and Mike
O'Connor (Bultaco). With this being
the first race of the season and all that,
many of the new and old bikes were
sounding pretty sick and all around the
circuit bikes could be heard coughing

sneaking their first appearance in the
Transvaal, along with some really neat
works-replica Kawasakis,
It was not only a first time for many new
bikes, but also for the dozens of new
riders venturing out into the wild world
of motocross, and throughout the day
anxious first time Mamas and Papas
could be seen gnawing at their nails as
their sole heirs disappeared in a screaming
pack of dust.
With a record club meeting turnout of
176 riders, there was some spectacular
racing, and it was a pity that the extremely
dusty conditions and faulty P.A. system
were allowed to spoil the day for many
spectators.

As the name suggests, on- and off-road
motorcycles are dual purpose machines,

conditions, both on and off road) they
also have to be able to handle them all,

These were the requirements Honda

Last year there is no doubt that the red

and yellow team Suzuki Shell colours

were dominant at all the Nationals and

at many club races.

On the track the team Suzuki Shell

riders really put up good performances

and the team managed to win two

National championships. Mike Hopkins

won the 500 cc motocross title, while

Mike Cameron wrapped up the S.A.Pro-

duction Motorcycle championship.

Keith Zeeman, who had a giant killing

year, often beating 750 cc machines with

his 500 cc Suzuki RG500. He was un-

lucky not to win the Formula 1000 class.

The new Suzuki Shell team retains a lot

of last year's riders, and features a lot of

new ones as well. The team has been

greatly expanded, and to keep track of

the twenty five riders who make up the

team, it has been divided into regional

groups, each with its own manager.

These regional groups mean that the

Suzuki Shell team will be seen not only

at all National championship meetings,

but each group will compete in regional

races in its own area as well.

In addition to the Suzuki team sponsored

by Shell and administered by the three

team managers, there are four other

motocross members run by the biggest

motorcycle dealer in the country, Suzuki

Centre Johannesburg.

The Suzuki Shell racing team is divided

into the following groups.

TEAM TEXAS SUZUKI

A completely new motocross sponsor

has formed a motocross team. Texas

Instruments, the manufacturers of the

new Texas digital watches have formed

their own team.

Texas watches became involved in

motocross last year when they tied a

watch to the spokes of a Suzuki to

to prove how tough it was. Both the

Suzuki and the Texas watch were still

working perfectly at the end of a hard

day's racing!

Since then, one thing led to another and

suddenly Texas watches had their own

team. What's more is that it's not just a

motocross team, but it's probably the

most powerful single motocross team

in the country.

Team leader is five (or is it six 7) times

S.A. Champion, and the only Springbok

in motocross, Horace Bergstrom. Horace

is a legend in his own time, and is easily

the smoothest rider on the track. In fact,

his riding is so smooth and controlled

that to many spectators used to more

spectacular riding he looks as though he

isn't going fast. Don't be fooled. Just

watch the others trying to keep up with

him! He will be riding a Suzuki RM250C

in the 250 cc class, Horace will also be

Mota X SA Vol.2 No.3 March,78 Page29

Last week at our local Back Woodsy M.X. track it struck me how much image plays
a part in moto -cross nowadays when I saw Johnny No-Good on his RM 125 M
festooned "with '~ racing t and 'DG Performance' stickers.

/ "Ya know pal", he said to me as he, brushed his hand through his Bell, rubbed sand
out of his Carreras and patted his Jofa as he stifled a yawn, Itt never had as
much fun 'riding moto-cross until we dressed for it. Everyóne doea'", and with a
flick of his limp wrist and finely manacured Joffama gloves he gestured to the
other racers.

He was right of course. No longer could one arrive in jeans, veldskons or
scorpean stampers and an army issue helmet. Just keeping up the image costs more
than actual maintenance and racing costs of a motor-cycle.

A Bell helmet, (preferably Moto -Star) is a must, after all, De Coster, Wolsink,
Hannah, the Bergstrom's, Maben, Tissen and Stevenson wear that brand.

A trick, fully verted nylon MX jersey is next on the list, (your number on the
back optional but all SA's stars have got their numbers on their back). A
rugger jersey is no longer in!

Leathers, (whether nylon or "real" leather) are an important part of each racer's
eneemble ï Whether they are in team colours or, the pre-m.ade Mikkola type
"leathers" is irrelevant, but they must have the riders name on hls back, and,
down his' left leg.

~ boots are less important but the new Sidis are well liked as they are
similar to De Coster's l'High-Point" boots and Tissen 's uJTu boots, both brands
are unobtainable in South Afr:,i.ca.

Th.e smaller items are just as important - Duckb LLl.s Peaks are well-liked (who

cares whether they deflect mud and dust?) but th.e smaller curved ones are also

becoming popirLar since Grant Maben and Roger De Coster have worn them. Of

course, duct tape on the peak is a must. Socks must have your bikes name on

them. Goggles were mainly Carrera but Charlie Tissen has brought back the

craze from the States of wearing Scott goggles with a cut-off faceguard and a

Jofa mouth-guard, like Gerrit Wo A full Scott or Jofa face guard

is optional.

I realised things were getting out of hand when I went to our local dealer,
and asked for a MX outfit and he pulled his tape measure from around his neck
with a limp wrist and with a lisp nDo you want it with one cravat or two,
Sir?"
