Vorwort/Introduction

Sie be-

documenta in pictures

The success story of Kassel‘s world art exhibition series has been written, re-written and put into words many times. The very
basis of that success, the visual reality, the concrete perspectives on show, were, however, largely neglected in these reviews.
The present picture volume sets out to close this gap. It answers the question as to what has been so fascinating about
documenta - not theoretically, but concretely, with a presentation of visual documents. In doing so, it is the first comprehensive
pictorial history of the world‘s most important exhibition series for contemporary art. The 14 stages since 1955 come alive in
a representative selection of past images. As a review of the epoch-making staging methods of the documenta, the volume
not only provides information about exhibits, but also about the manner in which they were presented. The focus is less on the
individual objects as on their connection to the staging context of the exhibition they were shown in. Programmatic installation
shots inform about the spectacular methods and changing conceptions of curatorial practice: from Arnold Bode‘s ideal of art
staging to today‘s event formats. The volume features representative impressions, many of which have since become iconic
images, alongside surprising, and nonetheless informative perspectives. These give us insights into the history of exhibition
photography and show its significance in scenographic research.
The images speak for themselves. Short texts serve as informative visual aids. The content has been pared down to a bare
minimum and helps put the image in question in the context of the exhibition it was shown in.
Obviously, in light of the sheer size of the events, full coverage of every item was not possible. There are around twenty
photographs for each documenta, each selected to communicate the essence of the event in question. Based on the history of
documenta, the present volume is thus a visual history of art and its mediation in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The editors would like to thank all the photographers who have made their photos available for publication. Special thanks to
Alexander Zeisberg, head of the Media Collection at the documenta archiv, who never hesitated to make accessible even the
most remote corners of his analogue and digital image collections.

Die Institution/The institution

Die Kasseler Weltausstellung der Gegenwartskunst
1955 organisierte der Kasseler Maler und Gestalter Arnold Bode im Museum Fridericianum eine umfassende Übersichts
ausstellung zur europäischen Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts – genannt documenta.

The World Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Kassel
In 1955, Kassel-based painter and designer Arnold Bode organised an exhibition of twentieth century European art in the
Museum Fridericianum that covered a wide range of areas. It was entitled documenta. This review of the most important
aspects of the modern age aimed to record victory over the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany, and to document the
new cultural beginning of a democratic society.
In continuation of this unique cultural-political achievement, documenta has evolved to become the world’s most important
series of exhibitions devoted to contemporary art. It initially runs in four-year intervals and later every five years. As an infor-
mation platform on the latest trends in the international art scene it has throughout its history documented and commented
on all stages of western – and later global – perceptions of art. Each documenta reflects current artistic production, and also
the status of discourse on art-theory. Its scenographic innovations at numerous event locations have set new standards for the
methods used to stage art.
What joins each exhibition is the basic understanding that the documenta is an institution for the purpose of objectively
documenting contemporary art. documenta’s exclusive position as a world art exhibition has come about because it presents
itself as a world authority. Its uniqueness is the claim it stakes anew in each exhibition to represent the definitive canon of
contemporary art.
Each documenta has to re-invent itself every time it is held in regard to organisation and concept. This task has been in the
hands of changing artistic directors since 1972. They are appointed for each exhibition by an international selection committee.
The event is operated as a not-for-profit limited liability company, which gives the artistic director the widest possible artistic
freedom.
documenta’s claim to objectivity has faded over the years, and today it has become a vital platform for the discussion of prob-
lems of global social relevance, featuring widely diverse forms of cultural events based on uniquely individual concepts.

Kombinationen bereits vorhandener Praktiken.

In 1987 Manfred Schneckenburger is entrusted for the second time with the direction of a documenta.
He discovers “new historical and social dimensions” in contemporary art, which amongst other things
impress visitors with dramatic grand gestures in narrative installations. War, violence, oppression,
individual and collective threats are central themes under the slogan “Loss of Utopia”. These are
not expressed in new artistic strategies, but in new combinations of praxes that already exist. The
exhibition displays an art that demonstrates social awareness between autonomy and application,
complemented by artists’ spaces dedicated to contemporary architecture (“Ideal Museum”) and
design. Reaching energetically into the town itself, artistic installations comment on problematic
points within the urban space.

Irony and tragedy: Design artist Javier Mariscal’s column stumps exemplify the art’s balancing act
between autonomy and application. These portico adaptations are autonomous sculptures, while
simultaneously and quite profanely serving as ticket offices. And at night, after a long day of
witnessing countless impositions, God’s eye closes in Krzysztof Wodiczko‘s gable projection.
