Ms Joshi comes into the classroom.
‘Everyone, meet Nancy,’ she says. ‘Nancy
is a new student. Say hello to her.’
‘Hello, Nancy,’ the children say together.
‘Hello,’ Nancy replies.
Ms Joshi turns to Nancy and says, ‘Please
sit down. We shall start the class.’
Nancy sits next to Lata and puts her bag
under the desk. Ms Joshi begins the class.
After a while, the bell rings and it’s lunchtime.
‘Come on, let’s have lunch,’ Lata says
to Nancy.
‘All right,’ Nancy smiles and says.
Lata puts her lunch box on ‘What do you have?’ she asks Nancy.

So we get to eat a lot of it.’

Come and taste the bebinca,’ she
calls out to everyone.
‘Bebinca? What is bebinca?’ asks
Rahul.
‘It is a sweet dish from Goa,’ Nancy
tells him.
‘Could I also taste it?’ Sunny asks.
‘Sure, but leave some for me,’
Nancy laughs and says.
Nancy comes home from school.
‘How was your first day at school, Nancy? Did you make any friends?’ her
mother asks.
Nancy hugs her mother. ‘It was so good, Mum! Everyone loved your bebinca.
Now everyone is my friend because of the bebinca.’
