A Word From Our President

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to the beginning of our 2018-2019 Program Year.

I am very thankful and humbled by your support of my presidency. I am
excited and honored to have the opportunity to work alongside you all. You
have already shared a lot of love and encouragement with me. What a
group of smart, focused, talented and caring children and teens in our
chapter supported by caring, willing, creative and fun-loving mothers. Yes,
that is what I have been experiencing so far. I appreciate your willingness to
step into service to keep our chapter moving Full STEAM Ahead to Black
Excellence. That is my theme this year, Full STEAM Ahead to Black
Excellence. When you hear STEAM, I want you to think of the Energy,
Power, Momentum and Transformation that water goes through in order to get to STEAM. That is
what I am feeling with North Jersey. We have energy, power and momentum to bring about
transformative programming and relationships for our young people, our mothers and our community.
Further, I want you to think of STEAM at our chapter level in terms of:

S – Service & Strategic thinking

T – Teaching & Transformation

E – Excellence & Esprit de corps

A – Attitude & Alignment

M – Manageable & Meaningful

I will take more time this year to delve into each of these areas so you can see how this really
connects to our National Mission as members of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and our local practice.

Please enjoy our send-off of our 2018 graduates and the words of wisdom from their moms, and take
a peak at our leadership team for 2018-2019. Thank you again for your support and love and I look
forward to building deeper and meaningful relationships with each of you to support your goals for
your child (children) and your goals for moving Full STEAM Ahead To Black Excellence for North
Jersey.

And away we go!

All my best,

Margaret
Excellence is never an accident; it is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent directions, skillful
execution, and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. ~ Anonymous

After presiding over the initiation ceremony, President Monique Moore Pryor
yielded the floor to her successor. President-Elect Margaret Cunningham reminded
the new moms that we are here to make a difference as we help develop our
children and impact our community in a meaningful way. She encouraged them to
stay focused, stay connected and stay full of love. She wrapped up with a word of
advice to “reach up and reach out,” saying friendship and love can be developed in
the chapter as long as you step into Jack and Jill.

Class of 2018 - Zachary Dees

Zachary is graduating from The Morristown-Beard School
and is the son of Angela Culver-Dees and Taylor Dees. He
has been a member of the North Jersey chapter for five
years and served two terms as Senior Teen President.
Zachary has also served as treasurer, and received the
Distinguished Teen and President's Volunteer Service
Awards. He is an honor student, leader of the Diversity
Club, member of the Golf Team and captain of the Varsity
Basketball Team. Zachary plans to pursue his
undergraduate degree in International Business/Global
Studies at Elon University.

Angela Culver-Dees I have been a member of the North Jersey Chapter for five
years, serving on the Ways and Means Committee, as Senior
Teen Advisor and Nominating Chair. My most memorable
moment in Jack and Jill was attending Teen Conference as a
Senior Teen Advisor. The Senior Teens worked so diligently on
their apparel, scrapbook and banner. When we tried to give
them our opinion on what to wear, they basically told us, “we
got this.”  For the first time in many years, North Jersey won the
Apparel Contest. The excitement those young people
possessed lit up the conference room. They were so happy and
proud of their accomplishments. As they stated, “We put North
Jersey back in the Map!” My words of wisdom to my son…Keep
God first, live each day with passion and purpose, stay true to
yourself and strive towards the things that make you happy.

Marketing and minor in Economics.

I’ve been in Jack and Jill for 11 years and served as Tiana Webb Evans
Heritage Committee Chair, Group Chair, Associates
Chair and Social Committee Chair. One of my most
memorable moments in the chapter was the Studio
Museum in Harlem event for the Heritage Committee
when we had a digital art exhibition of the kids’
photography and we (me and the moms on my
committee) vogued our way on stage. We also had the
museum and their curators all to ourselves.

wonderful 15 years and the experiences for my two
graduates (Shari 2015 and Chaz 2018) have been beyond
measure! We will always treasure our Jack and Jill years. It's
hard to name one most memorable experience in the
chapter, as there are so many, but I think the most
sentimental moments that are dear to me are attending the
graduating galas of my two children at Teen
Conference. My words of wisdom to Chaz…You never
cease to amaze us! Your diligence, commitment, and
enthusiasm in all that you do make your entire family so
very proud...keep soaring!

women who truly work hard for their children and value
their families. My words of wisdom that I would like to
share with my son, Jordan is to “dream your dreams with
your eyes closed...but live your dreams with your eyes

the roles of Program Chair of Skills Olympics, Group Tri-
Chair, Senior Teen Co-Chair and VP of Membership. My
favorite memories include COPA parties, “Momma
Moments” and the chapter retreat at Darlene Winkler’s
house. The gratitude circle was AMAZING! Thank you
Sunne-Ryse! My words of wisdom to Marcus…Strive for
effortless action, embrace the Jack and Jill motto…Let’s
work, Let’s play, Let’s live together! Be patient and heed
the words of Lao Tzu “Nature does not hurry, yet

with the Ft. Lauderdale Chapter before joining North
Jersey in 2008. I served as a Group Chair and Program

most memorable moments in the chapter was spending a
day at The Juilliard School, participating in music, dance
and drama workshops with our Pre-Teens. It was absolutely
amazing! My most important pearls of wisdom for my son
are to follow his heart and to trust his gut; and to
remember the words of Nelson Mandela, “It always seems
impossible, until it’s done.” May his words guide your
creativity, your curiosity and your work ethic.

animator and designer in addition to acting.

I was in Jack and Jill for six years and served as the archivist. Kimberly White
My most memorable moments were tackling the ridiculously
cold weather to attend COPA each year and leaving the
event drenched because my daughters, Michael and I had
such a fantastic time dancing to old and new music!
Words to my wonderful Ariel...We are so proud of you. The
best is yet to come. Stay kind, humble, brilliant, unique,
graceful and continue to let your light shine! Illuminate

Children’s Cluster

The Mighty North Jersey hosted the largest Children's Cluster ever with nearly 600
parents and children in attendance. Mothers and fathers from Pittsburgh to Virginia
made their way to New Jersey to indulge in STEAM and true friendship-building. North
Jersey came to work, give back and have fun. The day began bright and early with long
registration lines that our mothers handled with grace and patience. At the opening
session, Fathers Auxiliary member, The Honorable Mayor Dwayne Warren, Esq. of the
City of Orange, delivered greetings.

The workshops went into full gear. Mother Christiane Agkpo, owner of the Montclair
Learning Center, led over six workshops on coding and robotics, with her, her staff and
our mothers, sitting on the floor helping children build remote-controlled machines
from scratch. Mother Nancy Wheeler led two financial literacy workshops that gave
children amazing insight on how to manage their money. In addition, the community
service workshops, led by Community Service Chair Casilda Luck Barnes and her
amazing team, was a beautiful sight to behold with over 200 Jack and Jillers packing
pajamas and books and drawing beautiful pictures for needy children. These three
unique workshops, presented by our mighty moms, were the best of the day. Quoting
the Eastern Regional Team, they were “the best workshops at any Children's Cluster”
they've seen.

Special thanks goes to the tireless duo, Cluster Chairs Karen Hayes and Ali Scott for
their amazing leadership as well as our Workshop Chairs, Marcia Hicks and Danielle
Cooper Daughtry who organized thought-provoking presentations for our children and
parents. Our team was deep and wide and thanks continue to the following individuals;
Margaret Cunningham - Budget Chair, Tiffany Dupree-Atwell - Registration Chair,
Tammi Branch and Kelli Montgomery - Souvenir Bag Chairs, Eboneé Lewis and Ericka
Heggins-Atexide - Volunteer Chairs, Jacquelyn Johnson Brandon - Protocol Chair, and
last but not least kicking off the weekend leading the Friday night parties with over 80
mothers and over 100 children registered for two simultaneous parties - Tawaina
Turner-Dones and Marlaina Powell who treated the guests like royalty. None of this
would've been possible without the 50 plus mothers from our chapter being of service
to others and having a good time while taking care of over 400 children. Although all of
us ended the day extremely tired, we were filled with the joy of giving back. Mothers,
thank you for your patience and service.

teachers you have in high school”
Tyree Barnes, Director of Great
Oaks Legacy Middle School,

DISTINGUISHED MOTHER

North Jersey salutes Audrey Qualles
Johnson as our 2018 Distinguished
Mother of the Year! Audrey was selected
for the chapter’s most esteemed
recognition based on her sheer
excellence, kindness, selfless dedication
and strong, quiet leadership.

Audrey is a trooper in every way. She
epitomizes what our distinguished
mother should be, a shining ambassador
of North Jersey inside the chapter and
outside the chapter. In her latest
leadership role as Senior Teen Lead
Advisor, Audrey made sure all of our teens were valued, supported and
successful. She treated them fairly with love and encouragement as though each of
them were her own. As Andrea Fant-Hobbs put it, “Audrey‘s voice is never raised
above others, she listens attentively, speaks quietly and always seeks to rally the team
moving toward positive action and outcome. She humbly avoids the spotlight, often
not recognizing just how simply amazing she is, and how her thoughtful deeds and
words speak for themselves and serve to make our chapter a joy to be a part of.”

Marlaina Powell and Karen Hayes are the recipients of North Jersey’s 2018 Angel Awards.
Debbie Humes received the President’s Award.
