Online registration through the Learning
Management System (SWANK).

Course registration online will be completed through the new learning management system
(SWANK) for all who would like to participate in the course offerings. To find out when a course is
being offered go to Swank and follow the instructions on how to access the system and register for a

class on page 8 of this catalog.

To Access the SWANK Learning Management System

1. Go to PIH Health Connect.
2. Look under Application Links (on the right hand side of the page).
3. Look for ‘Learning Management System (SWANK). Click on this link.
4. Enter your Employee Number. Note the instructions asking you to include a ‘W’, ‘D’ or ‘P’ in front of your

employee number.
6. Enter your Password – the first time you log in, your password is Welcome1. The system will provide in-
structions on changing your password. Follow the instructions to log in.

Using SWANK to Register for Classes

Most employee courses in this catalog are available through SWANK. If you have questions regarding class
registrations, contact the Nursing Education Department at Ext. 12618 or Organizational Development at Ext.
12843.

Once you are in Swank, click on the word ‘Events’ on the blue ribbon across the top of the page.

1. Search for upcoming events using the list view and click on the icon for details

2. You may also search for upcoming Events using the ‘Calendar View’ on the right hand side of the screen.

Click on the words ‘Calendar View’ and you will see the calendar with the Events (classes) listed on the day

they are scheduled.

3. Click on the class title to access more information. Once you are on the ‘Event Detail’ screen, click on the

‘Register’ button to register for the class.

4. Print off a printer-friendly syllabus.

5. View and print any associated materials prior to the event.

6. Add event to your outlook calendar by clicking the icon.

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT PROVIDER COURSE

This course is offered for active Healthcare Providers whose training and scope of practice require Advanced Cardiac
Life Support knowledge and skills. The focus is on enhancement of the participant’s skills in treatment of immediate car-
diac arrest, peri-arrest, and immediate post-arrest care. Emphasis is placed on continuous, high quality CPR and team
dynamics. Skills are taught through active participation in a series of cardiac and respiratory cases, using the AHA
ACLS algorithms and BLS skills. The successful participant will complete a CPR and Respiratory skill testing station, a
written exam with a minimum score of 84%, and demonstrate course knowledge while acting as team leader during a
MegaCode testing station. It is required for all attendees to complete the online ACLS Pre-test with a score of 84%,
(web address is located on the bottom of page ii of the Provider Manual), and bring the test results to class. It is also
required to bring the ACLS Provider Manual to class. Basic Life Support Renewal (BLS) has been added to all ACLS
courses (currently only at Whittier campus). BLS card issuance will be dependent upon successful completion of the
BLS skills and written exam at 84%. All exams are now open book.

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT RENEWAL COURSE

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support Update Course (ACLS) is offered for the active Healthcare Provider who holds a
current ACLS card and whose training and scope of practice require ACLS knowledge and skills. The Update/ Re-
newal Course is targeted to the experienced ACLS Provider who routinely uses ACLS in their practice. This is a fast
paced class geared for the Healthcare Provider who possesses a strong knowledge for ACLS, BLS, Pharmacology
and EKG interpretation. Course participants will be required to demonstrate CPR, bag mask ventilation skills, com-
plete a written exam with a minimum score of 84%, and successfully complete the Mega Code testing station. It is
required for all attendees to complete the online ACLS Pre-test with a score of 84%, (web address is located on the
bottom of page ii of the Provider Manual), and bring the test results to class. It is also required to bring the ACLS
Provider Manual to class. Class size is limited to 12 participants at Whittier campus. Interested staff need to register
early and may need to attend a course months prior to their actual expiration date. Please register for your course as
close to your expiration date as possible. Basic Life Support Renewal (BLS) has been added to all ACLS courses
(currently at Whittier campus only). BLS card issuance will be dependent upon successful completion of the BLS
skills and written exam at 84%. All exams are now open book.

CPR: BLS ONLINE SKILLS CHECK

This course required for students who take the BLS Healthcare Provider Online Course. Students are required to com-
plete Part 1 of the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Online Course at www.onlineaha.org. An AHA Part 1 course
completion certificate must be submitted at the beginning of the skills check session in order to participate and receive a
course card. Completion certificates from online course providers other than AHA will not be accepted. BLS cards will
be issued after completion of the skills check-off and will be dated with the skills check-off date. Code Blue Manage-
ment is given in conjunction with BLS. Attendance at Code Blue is required at the time BLS certification is renewed for
Whittier campus staff only.

NEONATAL RESUSCITATION PROVIDER COURSE (NRP)

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an educational program of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the
American Heart Association (AHA) that teaches the concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation. This course has been de-
signed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn. The NRP Provider Card requires renewal every 2
years.

For: RNs, LVNs who work Maternal Child Care, RCPs, Physicians

Class Size: Maximum 12 participants

Prerequisites: Providers (students) are encouraged to wear scrubs. Providers are required to self-study the NRP Text
book 7th edition and complete the online examination through AAP/NRP website http://www2.aap.org/

NRP. NRP is now being administered through the Health Stream Learning Management System (LMS).

Register via the NRP/LMS portal and create an account if you do not already have one. The exam must be
taken within 30 days of attending a Provider Course. Instructor-learner contact is focused on interactive
learning, immersive simulation, and constructive debriefing. The course consists of the Performance Skills
Station, an Integrated Skills Station, and Simulation and Debriefing.

 The Performance Skills Station provides an opportunity to practice or review technical hands-on resuscita-
tion skills with instructor assistance.

 The Integrated Skills Station allows the instructor to facilitate more than one scenario and evaluate the
learner’s readiness for simulation and debriefing. The instructor will not coach, assist, or interrupt during a
scenario.

 Simulation and Debriefing is now a required component of the NRP course. It provides team members with
a safe setting in which to integrate cognitive and technical skills and focus on team communication and
patient safety.

This program is designed to support the facilitation of the new RN graduate with clinical reasoning and to develop a culture of
knowledge seekers related to evidence based practice while moving the novice toward advanced beginner and competence in
the clinical environment. The program uses case studies and real patient situations during discussion of application to patient /
clinical situations and current clinical concerns.

CONFLICT RESOLULTION

Resolving conflict in a healthy way often leads to stronger working relationships, new ideas and solutions in the work
environment. To optimize performance PIH Health employees must be able to effectively resolve issues and settle dif-
ferences as well as implement solutions to problems that arise in the work environment. Prior to coming to the class,
employees will be asked to complete a conflict mode style assessment that will help them better understand the range
of styles used in conflict situations. We use a range of conflict styles based on our skills and demands of the situation at
hand. By expanding understanding styles of handling conflict, employees will be able to improve their working relation-
ships and the way goals are accomplished.

Emotional intelligence is the capacity to recognize and effectively manage emotions in ourselves and with
others. Emotional intelligence increases our ability to make good decisions, build relationships, deal with

A mandatory course for all Administrative Council (AC) and Management Advisory Council
(MAC) members. Designed to teach managers and administrators the annual budget process,
advise them of important deadlines, and provide instructions on how to use the Budget Advisor
software in order for MAC members to complete their annual department budgets, including
budgeting for pay increases and new positions, how to input vendor expense budgets, and how
to enter statistical and revenue budgets, just to name a few.

(CBISA SOFTWARE)

Computer training class intended for those individuals re-
sponsible for reporting community benefit activities and
data outcomes on behalf of a particular department or pro-
gram. New community benefit reporters will be trained on
the procedures for compiling data and entering it into the
web-based CBISA software program as well as how to re-
port program outcomes into community benefit data track-

FUNDAMENTAL LEADER PROGRAM

Our organization is only as strong as it leaders are. The
purpose of this class is to increase organizational perfor-
mance through the development of leaders. Leaders will
learn fundamental knowledge, skills and tools to effectively
lead teams, increase employee engagement and achieve
business results. Participants are nominated to attend by
senior leadership in collaboration with their management.
Each cohort completes the series together. Each series is
10 sessions long. Participants must attend all ten class
sessions. The manager of each participant will meet with
participant regularly to discuss learning, assignments and
practical application on the job.
