Adrian Kohler

Co-founder and Ar s c Director of Handspring
Puppet Company, Adrian Kohler is considered to be
one of the world's leading masters of his medium.
His mother was a though ul amateur puppeteer, who with
his father, as yacht builder and cabinetmaker, gave him a
firm grounding in woodwork and the crea on of moving
figures. A BA Fine Art at the University of Cape Town followed.

He then spent two years at The Space Theatre – the city's only non-racial venue at
the me and another in Birmingham U.K. at the Canon Hill Arts Centre and Weld
Community Arts Centre.

Kohler then moved to Botswana to run the Na onal Popular Theatre Programme
for three years. His puppets for Handspring have been widely acclaimed and
exhibited. He has had a solo retrospec ve at the Na onal Gallery in South Africa,
and groups of his works have been shown at The Barbican Art Gallery, London and
The Museum for African Art, New York.
His puppets and prints are held in several public collec ons: the Cons tu onal
Court, the Old Mutual Art Collec on and the Wits Art Museum in South Africa,
the Munich Stadtmuseum in Germany, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in
London.
Kohler received the Michaelis Prize [1974], a life me achievement award
from Tshwane University [2006] and an honorary doctorate of literature UCT
[2012] as well as the Evening Standard Award [2007] Lawrence Olivier Award
[2008]
Special Tony Award [2011] and the first Naledi Wold Impact Award [2014].

Basil Jones Basil Jones is co-founder and Execu ve Producer of
Handspring Puppet Company. Jones completed his
Photo: www.handspringpuppet.co.za BFA at UCT where he met future life-partner, Adrian
Kohler. In 1990, Jones and Kohler set up a not for profit NGO
called Handspring Trust for Puppetry Arts, which produced
the award winning Spider's Place, a mul -media educa on
series aimed at young learners from disadvantaged
backgrounds.

They set up the Handspring Awards for Puppetry, which recognises puppet design,
direc on and performance in South Africa. The Handspring Trust for Puppetry Arts
is involved in various projects in urban township and rural areas, using puppetry to
educate and empower youth and bring communi es together through parades
and performances.
Jones has developed a range of screenprint and mixed-media prints at Ar st Proof
Studio derived from technical drawings of the puppets from the War Horse. Par al
sales from the print collabora ons support the development of a stadium in
Barrydale in the Karoo, which was built through the Handspring Puppet Trust for
Puppetry Arts.
