ROTARY: MAKING A
DIFFERENCE

Some years ago, a new
acquaintance asked me what
should have been a simple
question:
“What is Rotary?” I opened
my mouth to reply and then
stopped short with the
realization that I simply did
not know where to begin. The
problem wasn’t that I didn’t
know what Rotary was. The
problem was that Rotary was
— and is — too large and complex to easily define. We are a member-based organization, a club-based organization, and a
service based organization; we are local, regional, and international; we are community members, business people and
professionals, working and retired, active in nearly every country in the world. Every one of our 1.2 million members has a
unique set of goals, experiences, and priorities; every one of us has a unique understanding of Rotary.

To me, Rotary is defined not by who we are, but by what we do — by the potential that Rotary gives us, and the ways we
realize that potential in meaningful and lasting service. Rotary has been around for a long time: 112 years. In some ways,
we’ve changed tremendously, as we’ve grown, matured, and adapted to the changing needs of our members and
communities. In our fundamentals, however, we remain the same: an organization of people with the desire — and through
Rotary, the ability — to make a difference in our communities, and the world.

We answer the question “What is Rotary?” with our actions, by making a difference through our service.
As an organization, we recognize how important it is that the world understand what Rotary is, and what we do. At the same
time, we know that it is more important than ever to allow our clubs to define Rotary service for themselves. As Rotarians,
we have more flexibility than ever to decide how we want our clubs to meet, work, and grow. We’re focused more than ever
on making sure that Rotary reflects the people it serves, with more women and a more diverse membership. And we’re
working hard to ensure that Rotary remains the world’s pre-eminent volunteer service organization, by emphasizing long-
term planning, sustainable service, and continuity in leadership on every level.

In 2017-18, we will answer the question “What is Rotary?” with the theme Rotary: Making a Difference. However each of
us chooses to serve, we do it because we know our service makes a difference in the lives of others. Whether we are building
a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation, training conflict mediators or midwives, we know
that the work we do will change people’s lives — in ways large and small — for the better. Whatever motivation each of us
had for joining Rotary, it is the satisfaction we find in Rotary that causes us to remain, the satisfaction of knowing that week
by week, year by year, we are part of Rotary: Making a Difference.

DG Message DG. P. GOPALAKRISHNAN

Dear GEMS, "We are promoting
Service above Self,
Warm Rotary Greetings…
which means,
I joined Rotary in 1999. From that moment, Rotary is Making a Difference in my we must
personality, in my family, in my business and in my social life. Rotary gave me
friends, Rotary gave me leadership qualities, and Rotary created opportunities. It’s GO THE EXTRA
very clear and obvious that Rotary changed my social image. People are seeing me as a MILE TO SERVE"
leader, as a person who cares about community, as a person who follows 4 way test.
What a difference Rotary made in my life and still making? Every individual Rotarian
is the real example that Rotary making a difference for its own members.

We are all witnessing that every Rotarian and every Rotary club is Making a Difference
by improving Sanitation and Hygiene conditions in schools, providing purified water,
preventing diseases and providing treatments, eradicating illiteracy, and developing
community around the world. When we make a difference in community the image of
Rotary and image of a Rotarian increases.

Friends, day by day, when I see our Rotarians in action, I realized that Rotary Making a
Difference to its own members, to the communities and to the youth. We have
thousands of stories to tell that Rotary Making a Difference.

Then a big question came inside me, when we are Making a Difference for several
decades all over the world, to the communities around the world, what is that our world
leader wants to do in 2017-18?

Friends, Rotary is flying high. Rotary has received recognitions from world
organizations like United nations, UNICEF, WHO, European Union and many more.
These organizations invite Rotary as part of them in making this world peaceful and
beautiful. Rotary is working with several Governments worldwide to bring peace.
All these are happening at the top level of Rotary. Are we doing it in club level? Are
we working with our local administration to make a difference? Are we working with
our state governments to make a difference?

Rotary in India growing very fast in membership, in contribution, in building image, in
developing youth and in all avenues. But are we strong? Are we consistent? Are our
projects sustainable? I have several questions like this.

Now it is clear that our world leader insists us to understand what is making a
difference & how to make a difference.
To Make a Difference we need to focus on below three areas.

1. Support and Strengthen our clubs.
2. Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service.
3. Enhance Public Image andAwareness.
This is one time opportunity for all of us to lead a club or zone or district. We are
committed to Rotary to promote peace and service above self. We are committed to
keep Rotary as our 1st priority for one year as club leaders. We must do more than what
is required from us. We must do more than what is expected from us. We must think
doing little bit more, going little bit further, giving little bit extra. This is called Going
Extra Mile. In anything and everything we must try to go the extra mile.

We are promoting Service above Self, which means, we must GO THE EXTRA MILE
TO SERVE.

Yes Friends, in 2017-18 we will GO THE EXTRAMILE TO MAKEADIFFERENCE.
Let us together walk the Extra Mile to Make a Difference.

Regards,

P. Gopalakrishnan

District Governor

Editor's

First of all I thank our GEMS DG for choosing me as the Editor of the Governor’s Monthly Letter for the
year 2017-18. It’s a great honour to me as I am given the opportunity to edit and design the GML.

GML is a best tool in the hands of the District administration to communicate with the District Officials
and District Clubs. It is the most appropriate medium to bring the District Team to the same frequency as
that of the District Leader.

First time in our Rotary era GML will reach the Unreachable, that means each and every Rotarian can read it on their own
through messages via phone, whats app, and mail. This is possible because of the App called 'My Club on Net'. I hope all
presidents have already updated their club data in My Club on Net App, if not kindly do it soon. It will help our club
member and also the non-District officers will be able to know the District communications.

I strongly believe that "GEMS Express " will Go the Extra Mile to Serve Our District 3000, with all your support.
