Break-Out Session: The Heart of Your Application

– Your Personal Statement

PRESENTER: Deya Luna
[Assembly Hall]
2:15pm – 3:00pm

________________________ SESSION DESCRIPTION ________________________

Much in the way the heart pumps blood through the rest of the human body, the
personal statement gives life to the rest of your health professions school application.
An effective personal statement not only connects all of the different components of
your application into a cohesive whole, it also allows application readers to view you,
the applicant, as a living, breathing potential new student—not just a name on a page.

In this session, we will discuss the specific function your personal statement serves in
the context of your entire application. After we discuss the broader picture, we will zoom
in and discuss the mechanics of personal statement writing—including strategies for
effective narrative writing, the drafting and editing process, and making every word
count.
