Course Description and
Learning Objectives

Course
Description

This course is designed as an introduction to
conceptual framework of Teaching English to
Other Speakers of English (TESOL). Situating in
the context of teaching and learning English as

second and foreign language, it aims at
introducing students to the features of English

teaching and learning processes and
developing their knowledge and skills on
second and foreign language teaching and

learning.

OLebajercntiinvges At the end of the course, students
are able to:

o Identify the stages and discuss the process of how
children acquire first language from three
theoretical positions (behaviorism, innatism, and

o interactionalism).
Explain the contexts required for second language
learning to occur and theories that explain the
aspects of language acquisition that are common to

o all second language learners and contexts
Explore and elaborate the concepts related to
Second Language Teaching and Learning that
covers subject matters of language teaching,
learners characteristics, categories of teachers,
teacher roles, and teaching and the experiential
learning cycle.

At the end of the course, students
are able to:

techniques in language teaching including finding their
strengths and limitations and evaluating how each

o method and technique contribute to language learning.
Elaborate the significance and examine g the
contribution of teaching skills to the success of teaching

Examine and recognize related basic concepts in

o teaching listening and teaching reading.
Describe and illustrate techniques, procedures and
task/activities in teaching listening and teaching
reading.

At the end of the course, students
are able to:

Describe and illustrate techniques, procedures and

o task/activities in teaching speaking and teaching writing.
Examine and recognize related basic concepts in

o teaching vocabulary and teaching grammar.
Describe and illustrate techniques, procedures and
task/activities in teaching vocabulary and teaching

o grammar.
Compare and contrast characteristics of ready-to-use
teaching materials and adapted/tailored materials by
teachers.

OLebajercntiinvges At the end of the course, students
are able to:

o Identify and describe factors to consider and guideline for
o designing effective ELT materials.

Identify and illustrate what teachers can do to modify

o problem behaviors.
Describe and illustrate how teacher manage the

o classroom with individual work, pair work and group work.
Identify and elaborate key concepts in assessing language
performance that includes evaluation, assessment and

o testing and different types of testing.
Describe and illustrate techniques and tasks/activities in

o authentic assessment.
Observe particular aspects of English language classroom
and report it in the form group sharing and Observation-
based Reflective Paper.
