Dear Teaching
Friends, resilience-
building
practices has
always been
at the forefront
of care at VHBG
and our own
resilience is
evident in
our history.

We recognized our 170th anniversary this year and spent some time reflecting on our heritage – our traditions, achievements, and beliefs
that are part of our history. Since 1846, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls (VHBG) has been dedicated to responding to the unique and ever
changing needs of children and families in crisis. As we reflected on the past, it was impressive to see the important path that led us to
where we are today and where we’re going in the future.

Founded as the Richmond Male Orphan Society, VHBG was originally dedicated to meeting the needs of young boys who had been
abandoned by their families. Providing a refuge of hope, VHBG continued to grow and evolve over the years as the needs of our
community changed. When the practice of placing children in orphanages declined and the foster care and adoption systems grew, many
children who had experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, or some other sort of crisis were left needing more options.

VHBG filled this need by using the evidence-based Teaching-Family model of group home care with boys, and now girls too, who needed
encouragement, protection, and a sense of belonging that come from supportive adult relationships in a healthy family environment.
A growing demand for alternative educational resources led us to establish the John G. Wood School on our campus, which today is
a premier choice for Virginia’s youth who are unable to be successful in their public school. As knowledge about the prevalence and
consequences of adverse childhood experiences increased, VHBG dedicated on-site therapeutic resources to encompass the children we
serve, both on and off-campus, with an outpatient counseling clinic that includes mentoring and psychiatric care.

Teaching resilience-building skills has always been at the forefront of care at VHBG and our own resilience is evident in our history. Over
the past 170 years, we rebuilt our residential program and added girls; we tore down cottages and built Teaching-Family Homes; we
expanded educational services from the dining hall basement to a state-of-the-art alternative school; and sharpened our focus on trauma-
informed care. We’re an established part of Richmond’s history because of our flexibility to evolve to meet community needs.

But the most important reflection on this history, of course, is seen in the thousands of lives that have been uniquely impacted by the
care, compassion, and commitment of donors like you, our staff, and Board members who have remained steadfast to the mission of
strengthening and empowering children and families to achieve their greatest success.

We thank you for your generous support of our mission and for your belief that all children deserve a bright future.
Sincerely,

Claiborne Mason Kelly Boykin

Unpacking
our 170-year
history. BY CHRISTOPHER CAMPBELL

VHBG Program Development Manager (and VHBG Curator)

As VHBG embarked on an anniversary year, it became clear that someone needed to curate the vast amount of archival items
stashed around our campus. Falling under the ‘other duties as assigned’ category of my job description, I was honored to be the
one tapped for the job. It motivated me to become more deeply engaged with our alumni and gave me a new-found purpose for
recognizing the past.

from a desperate need to house and raise
orphan boys in the Richmond, Virginia area. At
the time, there was a Female Humane Society
but not one for boys. The story goes that on one
particularly cold evening a small, orphened
boy knocked on the door of the Female
Humane Society (today’s Memorial Foundation
for Children). The headmistress at the time
answered the door and was asked by the boy
for pennies. The thought of this boy out on the
streets of Richmond haunted the headmistress’
thoughts. Hers was a home for girls – shouldn’t
there be a home for boys too? And from this
simple ask and the headmistress’ desire to help,
Virginia Home for Boys and Girls got its start.

Over the following 170 years, VHBG underwent
many changes to meet the needs of the
surrounding community. Three Richmond City
addresses preceded the current Henrico County
location. And changes in leadership, name, and
the demographics of the children served never
caused VHBG to sway away from the belief
that every child deserves a sense of normalcy

27th Annual Golf Classic

VHBG’s 27th Annual Golf Classic was held on June 17 at the Hunting Hawk Golf Club.
The night before the tournament, an infamous June storm wreaked havoc on the region
and caused great damage to property and power outages. But very patient attendees
and dedicated grounds-keepers proved that electricity wasn’t needed to play golf. After
a brief delay, the greens were cleared and golfers played to help raise $38,500 to support
programs at VHBG.

Tacky Lights Tour

For the last 24 years, Mr. Christmas, aka Frank Hudak, has adorned his home for
Richmond’s Tacky Lights Tour to raise funds for VHBG. Beginning in October, the set-up
time takes two months. Over 100 hours are spent every year on design layouts, electrical
schematics, repairs and adding new items. He uses 85,000 lights in his display which make
up over 40,000 watts and include 100 lighted figures and 4 miles of electrical wiring. In
2015, his total donation from the Christmas House was $7,028…bringing his total since
1991 to $110,000 for VHBG.

Youth Triathlon

“Because Family is Everything!”…that’s one of our slogans and you could literally see
that statement come to life at the fifth annual Youth Triathlon hosted by Endorphin
Fitness on our campus. This year’s event attracted about 600 people…families banding
together to cheer and encourage youth fitness. No matter what your family dynamic may
be, feeling the love of a caring adult is something every child deserves. 125 youth athletes
along with some of our VHBG kids swam four laps, biked six miles, and ran two miles
to raise more than $14,000 for VHBG. But the feeling of triumph our kids gained by
participating in the event was priceless.

Auxiliary

In the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016 our Auxiliary hosted card parties to
benefit VHBG. More than 100 women gathered each time in the dining hall for
Canasta, Mahjong, Bridge and various other card games. In addition to card
playing, the ladies ran a boutique, silent auction, and raffle. The events raised
nearly $7,000.

22 vhbg annual report 2016

There’s no better investment than the life of a child. But helping a child
in crisis survive and develop to their full potential is a moral imperative.
Children who become healthy and successful socially and emotionally
have a greater chance of becoming economically productive and engaged
citizens, which leads to a lifetime of benefits for them and our community.
