SWISHAND SWIRL

It tnbegan one day when Green Duck, who had a \ôy0
long neck, met Blue Boy who had two long legs.

Green Duck called out in a friendly wâY,

"I say where did you get those c

two long pegs?"
Blue Boy looking down said,

"These aren't pegs theY are

my very own legs."
Then Green Duck looking a

bit puzzled said,

"I can't help but say theY look
like stilts." Blue Boy answered,
"And I can't help but saY, that's
they way I am built."

I

Then Blue Boy said, {

"It appears to me Green Duck, that your

neck could u$a tuck or two".

"Gracious, what's the matter with you.
My long neck doesn't take much space and
ithelps me gather clues for each new case."

Blue Boy looking puzzled asked,
"Is your long neck like a periscope that goes

up and down or does it go round, round, round-?"

'No for heavens sake" answered Green Duck,
"My eyes and neck are like a team. They search
for clues if you know what I mean."

Blue Boy asked,
'?lease tell me what You do?"

"I am a detective. That's what I do."
Blue Boy shouted, "A detective!

Can I help? Can I?"
"Certainly", said Green Duck "lVe will give it a try.
Follow me. \Ve will find a case with plenty
of clues to üace.

2

I

And that is how Green Duck and Blue Boy
became a team and how they became good friends
if you know what I mean.
As the two journeyed down the road Blue Boy said,

"I bet your neck is quite a load. Please let me cârry you.

You can sit on my shoulders and rest a moment or two.

: \Ve will be like one instead of two."
Green Duck said, "I like that idea I really do"
So once more they started offwith Green duck riding
and Blue Boy's long legs gracefully striding.

3

Then Green Duck who has an inquisitive mind asked,

"Holil come you are blue and I am green
although two prettier colors I've never seen?"

Blue Boy, looking at up at Green Duck, asked,
"Is that our case, colors that are every place?"

"I never thought of that for a case, he answered,

but I wondered where colors come from".

Blue Boy said,

"I believe they come all the way fromthe sun"
"I say", answered Green Duck, "That sounds

like a very good one."

Then Green Duck called out,
"Let me down.

Please let me down. A bright light is drawing near."
Then around the bend came a delightful sight.

A cat as bright as yellow sunlight.

our eyes perceive the seven colors. of the rainbow: red at the top,

then orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet at the bottom.

Weather won't always cooperate and offer you â rainbow

right when you want to see one, but on a sunny day you can us€
your garden hose to create one. You have to stand with the sun
directly at your back, your shadow poirrted straight in front of
you, and the hose held so that in your shadow it looks like a gey-

ser shooting out the top of your head. If you stand in the wrong

position, or aim the hose too far to the left or right, you will lose
most or all of your rainbow. You will also lose it if you aim the
hose too low. It may take a bit of experimenting, but you should

be able to produce a beautiful arc in the shower of falling warer.

To understand why the rainbow is an arc, you have to

imagine a straight line going from the sun through your head into

the ground in front of you. This line points to the center of the
circle of which the rainbow is the upper part. If you 'ù/ere stand-
ing high enough---on a tall building, or.better yet, taveling in an
airplane-you could see the whole circle. But since you're stand-

ing on the ground, the horizon, or if you're creâting ¿ rainbow

with a hose, your lawn, cuts off the bottom part.

You can produce the best rainbows when the sun is fairly

low in the sky. When the sun is low, the line through your head is
tilted at a higher angle, and the rainbow's arc is more complete.

You might even succeed in produçing a second rainbow above the

first. The second rainbow will be fainter, and its colors will be

¡svs¡ssd-red at the bottom and violet at the top-because the
light forming this second rainbow has a different relationship to

the water droplet. It enters at the bottom of the droplet and re-

flects twice off the back of the circle before it comes out the front

again. The second reflection inside the droplet both we¿kens the
light and reverses the qrder of rhe coiors.

As you experiment with the hose, you will le¿rn that the

rainbow itself stands srill. The hose is like a beam of light that

picks up the rainbow when you point it in the right direction.
Even if you dance the spray up, down, and all around to see if
you can make the rainbow move, the rainbow will stay right
where it wants to be. That's because a rainbow involves precise

angles of sunlight to water droplets to human eye, and anything

other than those angles avoids the bendings and reflections that

produce the arc of colors \¡/e see.
