Message from the Executive Dean College of Economic and
Management Sciences (CEMS)

As the executive dean of the hosting college, I welcome you to the PhD Symposium in Economic and
Management Sciences. We are excited to offer a PhD symposium exclusively in the subject fields of
Economic and Management Sciences.
The theme for the 2021 symposium calls us to reflect on the entire concept of our highest academic
qualification. Through the conversations, discussions, presentations and various engagements during
the symposium we will affirm our collective ownership of and responsibility for doctoral research in our
College.
I believe that with this symposium we will also join our minds to rethink and revise the reimagined PhD
in a changing world. As the largest provider of business education in Africa and one of the largest in the
world, the Unisa College of Economic and Management Sciences makes a considerable contribution
to the provision of higher degrees and research. As a college we are committed to our teaching and
learning as well as our research and innovation efforts. We boast more than 400 doctoral students
enrolled in Economic and Management Sciences at Unisa in 2021.
Enjoy the symposium!
Prof Thomas Mogale

2021 PHD SYMPOSIUM 3

Message from the Deputy Executive Dean,
Prof Raphael Mpofu

As the Deputy Executive Dean of the College, I am responsible for the Research and Postgraduate
degrees portfolio in the college and I extend a warm welcome to you! The bi-annual PhD event is a
highlight on the college calendar. Since its inception, the purpose of this 2-day national symposium and
workshops, is to expose PhD students, research supervisors and scholars to practices in PhD research.
The workshops aim to provide a platform where research in economic and management sciences can
merge with supervision practices and allow for national networking on a virtual platform. The panel
discussions, workshops and key-note addresses involve a wide range of experts to share the practices in
PhD research at universities around the world. Hosting the symposium as a virtual event is indicative of
our abilities to adjust, adapt and move forward. I believe we will reach more students and supervisors
through this medium and I hope you will participate fully. As the conference theme and logo confirm:
this is Our PhDs.
Let’s reflect, rethink and revise!
Prof Raphael Mpofu

Message from the organiser

It is such a great pleasure to welcome you to another Unisa PhD symposium in Economic and
Management Sciences. This is the second symposium after initially hosting the bi-annual event as
conferences from 2014.
This year the theme is centred on Reimagining the PhD in a changing world where we will be reflecting
on, rethinking and revising the entire concept of doctoral studies in the ever-evolving higher education
landscape of the 21st century. The “re” as displayed in the symposium logo emphasises not only the
preposition associated with matters in regard to – but is also seen as “our PhD” which is the collective
for “our” in Setswana, Sesotho and Sepedi. Ultimately, [re] (or our) PhD brings in the collective
ownership and responsibility for the reimagined PhD.
The sessions and workshops will combine the experience and expertise of scholars from various fields
to equip doctoral candidates and supervisors with the capabilities and competencies needed in an age
of fast-paced change and technological disruption. The programme is underpinned by the conviction
that graduates should become confident scholars who value integrity in research, authenticity and ethics.
It emphasises the importance of viewing academic integrity development as a holistic and aligned
approach that supports the development of a culture of honesty, integrity and “ownership” of the
scholarly project.
We are looking forward to your active participation in sharing your knowledge and expertise with other
scholars and students.
Dr Marianne Engelbrecht
CEMS research ethics and integrity advisor
