SOCIAL, ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITY COMMITTEE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AT LPN The Exxaro Social, Ethics and Responsibility Committee (SERC) visited Leeuwpan mine on 12 May 2023 to engage with the Delmas Community stakeholders and to listen to their concerns. The SERC committee mandate derives from the company's commitment to proactively managing its economic, environmental and social impacts, and the public interest. Exxaro recognises that it forms part of an interrelated community and as such may have positive and negative impacts on the public interest and the global goal of sustainable development. The committee oversees the company's ethics with regard to business practices, its relationships with its employees and other stakeholders and the natural environment. Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, the Chairperson of the SERC addressed the local community members and they in turn had a chance to raise issues of concern. The advantage of the engagement with the Delmas community and government stakeholders contributed to a richness in discussions and shared learnings. Relationship building remains a key outcome of the stakeholder engagement strategy in redressing the plight of the poor in communities surrounding operations. TRAINING OUR COMMUNITY SUPPLIERS AND ENTREPRENEURS Earlier this year in March, Leeuwpan mine hosted a two-day Supply Chain Management (SCM) training workshop for the local community suppliers and entrepreneurs in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality (VKLM) area. This workshop was hosted to provide more information about the SCM processes and to assist community members to register as suppliers on the Coupa system at the mine. Sipho Mtsweni, Specialist SCM said: “We as a mine is exited to share information on Exxaro’s Supply Chain processes, to create a common understanding on how the SCM procedures works and to assist prospective suppliers to register on the Exxaro Supplier Portal.” This was the first time in Exxaro that a workshop like this was held that provided prospective suppliers a platform to ask questions and get assistance and in turn enable us to powering better lives in our local communities and beyond. LEEUWPAN IS GEAR(ING) UP The High-Performance Culture (HPC) Programme was launched at the mine early in February with a naming competition. Susan Verwey, IT Technician at the mine won the grand prize for the best name for the programme – GEAR UP! This programme aims to reignite our culture of performance, living the Exxaro Values, reviving the “LionHearted Team Spirit” as well as embracing the Exxaro Culture Themes. After the Imbizo’s over the past few months the various shifts and teams built a structure out of carton boxes that had to hold the weight of a motorcycle (and a man) driving over it once completed. Lots of fun was had and the importance of teamwork was demonstrated through this entertaining activity. The Gear Up campaign will continue to roll out at Leeuwpan mine in the coming months and more communication will follow. Absenteeism also includes partial absences like coming late for work, leaving early, and even extended lunches. It’s important to differentiate between absenteeism and other forms of absence. All employees miss work occasionally, but absenteeism has particularly disruptive effects at Leeuwpan mine. Unlike legitimate absences due to medical conditions or emergencies, absenteeism isn’t a legitimate absence and is therefore unlikely to be excused. Sudden illness, family leave, and personal leave are all examples of unexpected absences that are legitimate and therefore likely to be excused. These aren’t habitual or taken without good reason, so they aren’t absenteeism. Illnesses and other legitimate, unscheduled absences are bound to happen—but although they're sudden, they tend to be oneoff events that have little long-term impact on productivity. However, absenteeism costs Leeuwpan mine millions of Rands each year in lost productivity, wages, production of coal, and excess management time. In addition, the employees who do show up to work are often burdened with extra duties and responsibilities to fill in for absent employees at the mine, which can lead to feelings of frustration and a decline in morale. LEEUWPAN MINE’S SUPPORT FOR MATRIC LEARNER PROGRAMME YIELDS REMARKABLE RESULTS At Exxaro’s Leeuwpan mine education has always been central to uplifting the community in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality (VKLM). In the past, Leeuwpan mine ran a successful matric support programme for local schools until the end of 2019, however due to Covid -19, the mine focused its support for schools on the supply of other materials required for the support in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic during 2020 and 2021. After several engagements with the local schools and the department of Education, Leeuwpan mine received a request to again back the matric learner support programme of 2022 to benefit five secondary schools in and around Delmas. Mafa Max Motloung Secondary School, Phaphamani Secondary School, Botleng Secondary School, Sundra High School and Swartklip Combined School learners were provided with study books and learning materials for Mathematics, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Geography by the mine, a total of 1000 books (250 per subject). The Exxaro’s Leeuwpan Matric Programme Saturday classes took place over a period of 13 weeks where two meals per Saturday were provided for the 503 learners in the programme and a stipend paid to the teachers. The Victor Khanye circuit schools did not perform well in 2021 in the Mpumalanga Province however now the VKLM Circuit has climbed to number 47 out of 71 schools in 2022. This is a remarkable achievement for the VKLM Matric Class of 2022. In 2021 the pass rate for Matric learners in the circuit was 52% and it increased to 72% in 2022. LPN SPONSORS MAYORAL MATRIC AWARDS CEREMONY On Friday, 3 February 2023, Exxaro’s Leeuwpan mine was a one of the sponsors at the Mayoral Academic Awards Ceremony held at the Mafa Max Motloung Secondary School in Botleng. This awards ceremony held annually honours and celebrate the best performing high and secondary schools, teachers and matriculants of 2022 in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality (VKLM) Circuit. Leeuwpan mine also sponsored the event together with two other mining companies in VKLM. “As Exxaro we remain committed to our vision of Powering better lives in Africa and beyond, education is one of the key vehicles and focus areas in achieving that and we are proud to have been part of the stakeholders contributing to the improvement of our learners in VKLM, we will continue to support education and ensuring that our learners excel in their educational careers”, Lorraine Mofokeng, Stakeholder Affairs Manager at Leeuwpan mine. This prestige event was attended by all the top performing educators and learners of the various schools, school principals of both Primary and Secondary schools in the circuit, Nkangala Education District officials, Victor Khanye Circuit Manager, Ms Lihle Ngwenya, the honourable VKLM Mayor Mr Vusi Buda, the Nkangala District Mayor, Ms Leah Mabuza as well as the sponsors. GROCERY DONATION FOR LOCAL DAY CARE CENTRE On 25 January 2023, Exxaro’s Leeuwpan mine donated groceries to the children of the Lethabong La Bana Day Care Centre situated in Botleng. Lorraine Mofokeng, Manager Stakeholder Affairs at Leeuwpan, said: “We remain committed to investing in our local communities. These donations will make life a little easier for those in need. The donation is underpinned by the company’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to end hunger; achieve food security and improved nutrition; and promote sustainable agriculture.” DELLIES SHINE IN NEW RUGBY TOPS Exxaro’s integrated approach to infrastructure development, education, healthcare as well as enterprise and supplier development (ESD) aims to advance and strengthen communities. In that light, Leeuwpan mine continues to support local schools and sporting activities at various schools in our community and on 14 April 2023 the mine donated warm up tops to all the rugby teams at High School Delmas. “The aim is to give every boy the opportunity to shine and reach their full potential as they feel proud and excited to play in these new rugby shirts. This positive impact ignites joy not just for the players, but for the families and entire communities too,” said Peter Mnguni, rugby coach and teacher at Delmas High School. SHOES BRING SMILES TO SCHOOLS The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Leeuwpan Branch & Leeuwpan mine donated school shoes to Swartklip Combined School & Manyazela Primary School on 16 March 2023. “We are really pleased and grateful that we could assist some of these children because we know some of these children did not have shoes. When a child goes to school without proper shoes they get discouraged and it is difficult for parents to buy shoes especially when they’re not working,” said Lorraine Mofokeng, Stakeholder Affairs Manager at LPN mine. “Essential footwear can make such a difference to a child’s daily life and their potential to make the most of the opportunities that education brings, with broader benefits for their communities over time. School shoes might be the difference between a child going to school or staying at home especially in the harsh Delmas winter,” concluded Lorraine. THE LION-HEARTED INDABA NEWSLETTER — JULY 2023 11
On 21 April 2023, the Leeuwpan team celebrated Earth Day to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of the earth, protecting the environment and to build team spirit. The LPN employees took part in a clean-up campaign and picked up garbage around the main offices area at the mine. “More than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation. By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, we're making our world a happier, healthier place to live,” said Thakhani Sikhwari, Environmental Admin Assistant at Leeuwpan mine. YES! WE CAN END TB! Leeuwpan mine recognised World TB Day in March and by recognising this day, the team brings attention to TB and our collective power to end TB by 2030. Tuberculosis (TB) causes thousands of deaths every year in South Africa and the rest of the world. World TB Day 2023, with the theme 'Yes! We can end TB!', aims to inspire hope and encourage high-level leadership, increased investments, faster uptake of new WHO recommendations, adoption of innovations, accelerated action, and multisectoral collaboration to combat the TB epidemic. Thus, on Monday, 27 March the LPN Peer Educators handed out pamphlets and bandanas at both LPN entrance gates to employees and contractors to create additional awareness about the disease.
