Welcome to our team of volunteers for the
2017 National Senior Games
presented by Humana

You are part of the team of individuals who have so generously
offered their time and efforts to make the National Senior
Games a memorable experience for all involved. An army
of outstanding volunteers is vital to hosting an event to this
size and scale. You all are the direct communication for the
10,400+ senior athletes coming to Birmingham to compete
in their respective sports. You will leave a lasting impression
on these visiting athletes by representing the Birmingham
community and showing off your southern hospitality.
This handbook contains guidelines and reference materials to
make your volunteer experience as easy and fun as possible.
Please take the time to read and familiarize yourself with this
information so that you can better assist our visiting athletes
from around the country.
On behalf of the entire National Senior Games Association
staff and the Local Organizing Committee of the 2017 National
Senior Games presented by Humana, we thank you for helping

INTRODUCTION TO
THE GAMES

The 2017 National Senior Games presented by
Humana will feature more than 10,400 athletes ages
50 and over. These athletes, along with family and
friends, will make The Games the largest multi-day
sporting event that Birmingham has ever hosted.
Athletes will compete in 19 medal-contending sports
from June 2- June 15. All competitions and ancillary
events are free and open to the public and we
encourage the Birmingham community to embrace
and support these amazing athletes.

VOLUNTEER PROTOCOL
AND EXPECTATIONS

As the face of the Birmingham community to visitors for The Games, it is
important that volunteers enjoy their experience in order for visitors to
do the same. Let’s be conscious of the following items and expectations
as you represent Birmingham and the National Senior Games:

KEYS FOR SUCCESS

Volunteers are the key to making the National Senior Games a
successful and memorable event for everyone. The following are some
tips to facilitate your talents and ensure that you have a wonderful and
positive experience at The Games.

BE ON TIME.

We ask that you report to your assigned station at least 15 minutes prior to
your scheduled start time.

NO EARLY OUTS FOR YOUR SHIFT.

In order to provide proper coverage of volunteers for The Games, we ask
that you stay for the entire length of the shift you signed up for.

ALWAYS COMMUNICATE IF YOU ARE
GOING TO BE LATE OR MISS YOUR SHIFT

TO THE VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR.

SHOW YOUR PRIDE FOR BIRMINGHAM
AND SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY.

Athletes will be coming from all over the country and for many of them, this
will be their first visit to our city. Let’s be sure toshow off our Southern charm!

We ask that you add that personal touch to make each
athlete feel appreciated!

FIRST AID/MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Each venue has at least one first aid station. In case of illness or
injury, staff at these stations will be available to provide immediate
and basic care to athletes, spectators and volunteers. In the event
of an emergency, call for medical staff (in uniform) and get all
spectators and athletes away from the injured person.

* There will be a map at each venue for volunteers to see where the Medical Tent will be.
** If in an emergency and you cannot find medical personnel, call 911. Each venue will
have AED access if necessary.

NON-DISCRIMINATION

The National Senior Games prohibits discrimination or harassment
on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex,
age, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, disability, or
status as a disabled veteran of the Vietnam era. This is a commitment
made by the National Senior Games in accordance with federal,
state, and/or local laws and regulations.

PRESS

As a volunteer, you are an extension of the National Senior Games
and it is important you know the proper protocols should members
of the media approach you.

If you are contacted by the media, please direct their request

Please review these policies regarding the media:

-DO NOT make comments on behalf of the National Senior Games
Association, Knight Eady Sports Group or 2017 National Senior Games.
-DO NOT make comments regarding the conduct, performance, injury, or
any medical issues of an athlete.
-DO speak about why you decided to volunteer and what you have
enjoyed about the National Senior Games.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHEN I ARRIVE, WHAT DO I DO? WHERE DO I GO?
Report to the Volunteer Check-In location at each venue, where
you will sign in and receive additional information about your
assignment. Volunteer check-in will be at the main tournament
desk at each venue. You should plan to arrive 15 minutes before
the start of your shift so that you can get all necessary instructions.
WITH INCLEMENT WEATHER, SHOULD I STILL REPORT?
Yes, you should report as scheduled. You will receive instructions
when you arrive at the venue. If weather cancels the event before-
hand, you will receive an email of cancellation and reschedule.

WILL I GET A BREAK?
Yes. Breaks are taken as necessary; please notify your venue
manager if you are going on a break.

WILL THERE BE FOOD AVAILABLE?
Yes. There will be complimentary snacks and water available for
all athletes and volunteers. If you have any dietary allergies or
restrictions, please plan accordingly. If you’re working more than
one shift at a time, please plan to pack a meal/snacks.

WHAT IF I LOSE/FIND PERSONAL ITEMS?
Please do not bring any personal items, NSGA will not be
responsible for any lost or stolen items. If you find an item, bring it
to the volunteer check in at each venue. These items will be taken
to the athlete village at the end of each day.

CAN I ADD ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER SHIFTS?
Yes! You can add additional shifts throughout The Games. Simply
log on to : http://nsga.com/volunteer or https://2017nsgvolunteers.
my-trs.com/ and register for any remaining open volunteer shifts.

WHAT DO I DO IN CASE OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY?
Call for a medical staff (in uniform) and get all spectators and
athletes away from the injured person. If medical staff is not
present in the area, call 911, and stay with injured person until
emergency medical personnel arrive.
