As we begin to adjust and get back to some normalcy, we need to revisit appropriate dress
for HCA Houston Healthcare West.
We have a dress code policy to present a positive, personal and professional image to
patients, visitors, and fellow employees that will instill confidence in others by being
appropriately dressed when on duty. To embrace role identity through choice and
consistency in uniform selection. To promote confidence and pride in staff by being well
groomed and properly attired.
As a reminder, here are some key snippets below that have been observed out of
compliance around the facility. You can find the complete dress code policy by logging into
HCAHRAnswers.com.
Uniforms
• Scrub colors and clinical apparel are designated by department/job title and must be
selected from the hospital-approved vendor. See addendum for guidelines by department
and job title.
• White, color-matching t-shirts/undershirts (long or short sleeved) are allowed under the
scrub top. A logoed scrub top is required under the logoed scrub jacket that is approved as
part of the uniform standards. A T-shirt cannot be worn in place of the required scrub top,
unless specifically approved by the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital or Division
President that is for a specific event.
• Visible prints, graphics, or logos on undershirts are not permitted.
• Scrubs and uniforms must be embroidered with HCA Houston Healthcare logo. Additional
embroidery on the scrub top, scrub jacket or uniform shirt is not permitted. Embroidery is
permitted on lab coats in the following format: Name, degrees, certifications on top row
and title underneath.
Shoes
As specified by OSHA standards, personnel providing direct patient care wear socks or
stockings and shoes with enclosed toes. Shoes need to be constructed of a non-absorbent
material with slip resistant soles. Shoes should be clean and in good repair. Leather athletic
shoes are acceptable. Footwear should coordinate with the assigned scrub color.
Natural and Artificial Fingernails
Employees must keep their natural nail short and less than ¼ inch long. Nail polish should
be in good condition with no chipping with the exception of Sterile Processing (SPD) and
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where no nail polish is permitted.
Artificial fingernails such as shellac, NexGen, gels, or overlay tip nails, etc. cannot be worn
by employees providing direct patient care (including but not limited to direct physical
contact with patients during exams, procedures, treatments, nursing care, surgery, or
emergencies); preparing or dispensing medication or blood products for patient use;
preparing equipment or supplies for patient use, food, beverages, and serving food.
