Reading Haggis

Haggis is one of the most famous
traditional Scottish food. It has
chopped liver, heart and lungs of a
sheep, diced onion, spices and
oatmeal. Then the mixture is pack
in a sheep’s stomach, tightly
secure the ends and boil it for a
few hours. The most traditional
way to serve haggis is with
mashed potatoes and mashed
yellow turnips or as the Scots call
it 'mashed tatties and bashed
neeps'. Haggis has been banned
in the United States since 1971.
The US Department of Agriculture
(USDA) has long objected to one
of the key ingredients in haggis –
sheep’s lung.

Haggis are easily
found in the
supermarkets in
Scotland.

It is about the size of a human
palm.

The tarantula were first eaten by
Cambodians starving under the Khmer
Rouge regime Bizarrely, they became
popular and are now served as a deep-
fried snack throughout the country.
Apparently, they taste a bit like crab. The
legs contain little flesh, while the head
and body have delicate white meat
inside. Certainly, there are those who
might not enjoy the abdomen, as it
contains a brown paste consisting of
organs, possibly eggs, and excrement.
Some call it a delicacy while others
recommend not eating it.

Fried Tarantula

Fugu Fugu is dish prepared using a pufferfish. It is
lethally poisonous due to its tetrodotoxin; and, it
must be carefully prepared to remove toxic parts
and to avoid contaminating the meat. Until this day,
there are no cure to tetrodotoxin poison. Only
qualified chefs with three to four years of rigorous
training are allowed to prepared fugu.
Occasionally, this dish led to accidental death.
Fugu is served as sashimi and chirinabe. Some
said the liver to be the tastiest part, but it is also
the most poisonous. In 1984, Japan banned the
serving of pufferfish liver in restaurants. Fugu has
become one of the most celebrated and notorious
dishes in Japanese cuisine.

Hakarl

Hakarl is a proud dish of Iceland. It
is a mystery how anyone
conceived of this dish. It is a
fermented Greenland shark. After
gutting and beheaded, the shark
will be placed in a shallow cave
and cover with sand and stones. It
will be left for two to three months.
Then, the shark will be cut into
stripes and let them dry for several
months before serving. Hakarl
smells like ammonia (the cleaning
bleach for clothes). It is usually
served with in cubes and you eat it
with sticks.

Hakarl are left to
dry in a room for
several months.

The brain can be kept for
more than 2 and a half year.

Brain sandwich is not as common and
popular as it was in the past. However, in
some parts of Ohio River Valley, USA,
you can get this dish easily. The brain of
a cow or a pig is deep-fried. It is put in a
hamburger bun along with desired
vegetables. Brain tastes a bit bland, so it
requires quite a number of sauces.
Brains from cows over 30 months old at
slaughter are no longer permitted to be
sold for. Since the fried brain burger is
like a hamburger, it is usually served with
cheese, pickled, fries or chips.

Century Egg

If you discovered a rotten egg, would you eat it?
Someone in ancient China did, lived to tell the tale
and now it’s an established delicacy. It is called
century egg as it is preserved. It is also known as
hundred-year eggs or pidan. It is covered in clay,
ash and salt for months, by which time the yolk is
dark green and stinks of sulphur. It will give a
greenish to grey yolk with a brown outer sphere.
Thanks to the ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, it
ends up tasting very pungent and salty. Century
eggs can be eaten without further preparation
other than peeling and rinsing them – on their own,
or as a side dish. The century eggs may also be
cut into chunks and stir fried with vegetables.

Bird’s Nest Soup

A dish dated back to 400 years ago,
bird’s nest soup is prepared using
edible bird's nest from solidified saliva
of swiftlets, which are harvested for
human consumption. The Chinese
believe that it stimulates good health,

especially for the skin.

The Busójárás is an annual
celebration of the Šokci living in the
town of Mohács, Hungary.

Reading

The Lopburi Monkey Festival or referred to as the Monkey
Banquet, is a festival that has been taking place since the 1980s after the
idea of a local businessman. His idea was to set up a buffet of fresh fruit and
other food for the monkeys (as Lopburi is home to an extensive monkey
population) as an expression of the town residents' gratitude.

As the name of the festival itself indicates, this is a festival where
the monkeys along with the food are the main characters. In Thailand, there is
the belief that King Rama gave a piece of land known as Lopburi to Hanuman
who was the Monkey King. For that reason, nearly 2000 monkeys each year
receive thousands of pounds of food in a big table where public enjoy seeing
them. People from Thailand also believe that monkeys bring good fortune so
this is also made in their honour. Besides of being a local celebration, the
monkeys attract a lot of tourists and the country receives a lot of revenue with
the visits. Just like any other events in Thailand, food plays a pivotal role in
the Lopburi Monkey Festival, and an array of vendors and food stalls serve
up delectable Thai dishes for the humans to enjoy as well.
