of Design

7th pd.

Line

 The linear marks made with a pen or brush or the edge created when two
shapes meet.

 Lines are useful for dividing space and drawing the eye to a specific location.
For example, think about how a magazine uses lines to separate content,
headlines and side panels.

 Line is an element of art that contours, outlines or defines a shape.

Shape

 A shape is a self contained defined area ex. Squares, circles, free formed
shapes or natural shapes.

 Shapes are defined by boundaries, such as a lines or color.
 Examples are circle, squares, ovals ,triangles and much more.

Size

 Size is simply the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of
another.

 As an example, a picture of a person can take on a whole different scale if a
tall tree is also placed in the picture.

 Playing with the scale and size of your objects, shapes, type and other
elements add interest and emphasis.

Texture

 Texture is the surface quality of a shape – examples rough,
smooth, soft hard glossy etc.

 Textures can create a more three-dimensional appearance on this two-
dimensional surface.

 Implied texture is used in painting or drawing to make an object appear rough
or smooth

Color

 Color is light reflected off objects.
 There are four categories or color: primary, secondary, intermediate and

complementary.
 For example Primary colors are red, yellow and blue, and cannot be created

from other colors.

Direction

 In web design, direction is most often determined by the images on the page,
but you can also impose direction through the placement of type or graphic
elements on the page, and with lines— especially when they have arrowheads
on them.

 Every page design has a dominant direction, which is established by the
placement of the most important elements.

 Examples: Horizontal, Vertical , diagonal
