Programme Details




Eligibility

Students enrolled in the Demi-Pair Training Scheme are able to apply for a student
visa. Visitor visas are suitable for up to 12 weeks study.

Students who come from countries without working holiday arrangements are able
to come as visitors (up to 12 weeks) or apply for a student visa.

Applications will only be accepted from agents who have ETC approved pre-
selection processes in place.


Additional Employment
Demi-Pair Students with working holiday visas are eligible to work part-time. Demi–

Pair students who do not have working holiday visas will need to get a variation on
their visa to work. This usually requires an IELTS 5.0 and a course enrolment of 24
weeks. Some families may request extra help. This option is arranged directly with
the family. New Zealand has a minimum wage regulations.


ETC is happy to give assistance, check application letters and CV’s. ETC does not

undertake or guarantee to find employment for Demi-Pair students. Information
about employment in New Zealand can be found on the New Zealand Immigration
website.

IELTS exam preparation
IELTS is the world’s most trusted English test. Over 1.4 million candidates take the test
each year to start their journey into international education and employment. IELTS is
recognised as an entrance requirement by British, Australian, New Zealand and
Canadian universities and for secondary, vocational and training programmes.

Exams are held approximately every 2 weeks in Palmerston North and Wellington

Cambridge exam preparation
Recognised by more than 20,000 institutions around the world, Cambridge English
exams allow students to demonstrate that they have the required skills to successfully
further their study at university and work effectively in professional environments where
a high level of English competency is required.

Enrolment Process









Agents interested in enrolling a student on this programme are required to send the
following documents to ETC approximately 3 months before the desired starting date.
On receipt of these ETC will assess the application. If an application is not approved,
ETC may make a recommendation for a more suitable programme.

Agents must also

 Arrange a skype interview between the student and ETC staff

Successful application
ETC will send the agent an Offer of Place and invoice for the total cost of the
programme. Once a family has expressed interest in the student, the family’s details will
be sent to the agent. ETC will arrange for the student to organise a Skype interview or
phone call with the prospective family. After the interview the placement will be
confirmed. If the family or student do not feel well matched, ETC will look for another
family for the student.

Before buying their plane ticket, students should wait until a family has been confirmed.
When confirmed, a copy of the travel itinerary should be sent to ETC. Airport pick-up
from the Wellington or Palmerston North airport will be organised.

Payment of fees must be made at least 1 month before the student’s arrival date.

For Demi-Pair Students enrolled on a course with no intake date, their first Monday will be
dedicated to orientation. Students are required to bring their passport, visa and a copy
of their travel insurance to ETC on their orientation day. Students will start their course on
the following day. These schedules are indicative and might vary slightly in terms of
content.

Orientation Week Sample (Wellington only)

ETC organises an orientation week in order to help students settle in their environment. It
will take place 1 week before the start of the Cambridge Preparation Courses. ETC
recommends that students plan their arrival to include this week. Students who start
on another date will have a 1 day orientation. Students will need to bring their passport,
visa and a copy of their travel insurance on the first day of school.

Weekly Timesheets


Students on the Demi-Pair Programme are required to complete weekly timesheets
outlining the number of hours of practical training they have completed with their family.
These timesheets must be signed by their family and given to the Demi-Pair Coordinator
every Friday

After School Activities**


Every week ETC organises various after school activities. Demi-Pair students are welcome
to join these depending on their schedule at home. Students are encouraged to discuss
changes to their schedule with their family if they wish to attend a specific
activity.

*Depending on the family’s requirements the student may be asked to care for the
children on weekends or before school. The number of hours is dependent on the

programme chosen.
** Student activities at the Palmerston North campus are subject to availability and are
scheduled on a seasonal basis.

Payment of Fees

All fees are calculated in complete weeks and any part week is counted as a complete week.
No compensation is given for Public Holidays when the school is closed.

Terms and Conditions, Cancellation and Refund Policy

 No refund will be given on the Demi-Pair Placement Fee where the student decides to withdraw from
the programme after the start of their course.
 Where a student decides to withdraw from the programme or is removed from their host family

because they are not meeting their contractual obligations, the student will pay for their own
accommodation until another family can be found for them.
 Where a family requests that their student is removed ETC will find the student another host family at
no extra cost. Should a third family be required an Accommodation Placement Fee of NZ$210 will be
charged.
 Where ETC has been unable to confirm a host family before the student arrives in New-Zealand, or
where the family has cancelled the placement , ETC will provide 2 weeks of homestay placement
until a host family can be confirmed.
 Where a Host Family cannot be confirmed in the city of the student’s first choice and one can be
arranged in their second choice, the student will be placed in the city of their second choice.

Terms & Conditions














 No refunds will be made where international students are asked to leave the school because they fail
to comply with either the school, community or host family regulations or for poor attendance or
behaviour.
 In the ‘no refund’ situations identified in the table, the Director reserves the right to make part refunds
in exceptional circumstances.
 Refund and Cancellation Conditions for external exam fees are set by the organisations running the
exams. Should a student cancel their exam and the organisation running the test not offer a refund,
ETC cannot be held liable. Exam Dates and Terms and Conditions are available for the students to
check at the school office.

Course Closure

If English Teaching College is no longer delivering or capable of delivering a course, the student will be
entitled to receive a refund of the balance of the student fees held by the trustee, which have not already
been paid to ETC. If the student transfers to another course provider, then the trustee will transfer the
student’s fees to the other course provider’s student fee protection arrangement.

Trust Account

English Teaching College holds fees in the Public Trust in accordance with s236A(2)(a) of the Education
Act 1989.

Public Liability

English Teaching College holds public liability and contents insurance with New Zealand Insurance (NZI)

ETC Liability

The school shall not be liable if the services we state we offer, cannot be provided for reasons beyond our
control.

Immigration New Zealand Requirements

Full details of immigration requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying,

Accident Insurance

The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens,
residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and
related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz.

Medical and Travel Insurance

International students (including group students) must have appropriate and current medical and travel
insurance while in New Zealand.

Eligibility for Health Service

Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you
receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full
details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and
can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.
