JOHN WATERS
One-man show
The Luckman Theatre

8:00 PM
Philosopher of filth and reigning king of bad taste, the legendary John
Waters presents an outstanding live one-man show at the Luckman Theatre
that celebrates his prolific career and fascinating life as an American icon.
A celebrated filmmaker, director and writer, John Waters has built a
reputation for shocking his audiences. Many of the cult legend’s films
satirize suburban America as well as many social conventions and attitudes.
He started out making short experimental films in the 1960s, often using
friends as actors and holding renegade, underground showings in offbeat
locales. Roman Candles (1966), one of his early works, marked the first
time Waters worked with Divine, the larger-than-life and over-the-top
drag queen now synomymous with Waters’ body of work.
Turning to feature films,Waters made Mondo Trasho (1969), Pink Flamingos
(1972), Hairspray (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), Serial Mom (1994), Pecker (1998)
and Cecil B. Demented (2000).
Waters has authored several books, including Shock Value: A Tasteful Book
about Bad Taste (1981), Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters (1983),
Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America (2015), and most recently
Make Trouble (2017). He also had a traveling exhibit of his photography
called Change of Life, which featured still images from some of his early
films.
