5 July 13, 2023 Dear Conference Attendee: It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2023 Tri-State Pre-Health Conference and Recruitment Fair. We are thrilled to be hosting the event for the first time in four years! This conference offers undergraduate pre-health students from the Tri-State region the opportunity to engage with a cohort of peers and to receive guidance from Health Professions administrators and students from across the country. Throughout the day, students can also attend sessions to further their personal, academic, and professional development. As you forge ahead on the journey to academic excellence and professional success, we hope that you’ll take full advantage of this opportunity to establish new relationships and prepare for a career in the health professions. The conference planning committee has worked diligently to organize sessions that we hope will be both informative and inspiring. 6 FAQ – Conference Attendees How do I find the location of the fair? The most convenient entrance to the venue is at 91 Claremont Ave, between 120th and 122nd Streets. How do I check in? After entering on the ground level, plase proceed past the security desk and downstairs to the Assembly Hall and pick up your name badge, lunch ticket, and conference information. You can then return to the ground floor and proceed into the Cloister Theater to find seating for the Welcome and Keynote Address. When should I arrive? Plan to arrive no later than 9:15 am to allow yourself enough time to register and settle in before the fair. If you are local, give yourself time to walk or park. Who is attending the conference? Most attendees will be summer scholars who are participating in pipeline programs at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Where will lunch be held? Lunch will be available starting at 12pm for conference attendees downstairs in the Assembly Hall. Attendees are welcome to enjoy lunch in the Assembly Hall or take the elevator up to the 9th floor breakout space to find additional lunch seating. Which afternoon sessions should I attend? Conference attendees will have flexibility to choose between concurrent afternoon activities. Make sure to leave enough time to eat lunch, network, and attend at least one breakout session. 7 WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTER: Dr. David Bell [Theater] 10:00am-10:15am David L. Bell, MD, MPH serves as Associate Dean of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at the Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S). Throughout his tenure at Columbia, Dr. Bell has demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing healthcare and addressing the unique needs of diverse populations; he has presented his research on primary care for adolescent and young adult males at regional, national, and international forums. Dr. Bell's work has not only contributed to the academic field, but has also played a crucial role in supporting VP&S students and pipeline programs. Dr. Bell has been actively involved in various initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion. He has been a member of the VP&S admissions committee for over a decade, playing a crucial role in recognizing and nurturing the visible and "invisible" diversity within each incoming class. Dr. Bell received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and his master's in public health degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He completed his residency at Bellevue Hospital and his fellowship at University of California-San Francisco Medical Center.


8 KEYNOTE ADDRESS PRESENTER: Dr. Lynne Holden [Theater] 10:15am-11:00am Lynne Holden, MD is a national leader in diversifying the healthcare workforce. She received her undergraduate degree from Howard University and her medical degree from Temple University. She completed her residency training in Emergency Medicine from the Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, NY. Dr. Holden is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, Vice-Chair for Diversity Equity and Inclusion in the Emergency Department and serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. Dr. Holden is the co-founder and President of Mentoring in Medicine, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the diversity of the health and science workforce from elementary school through career. She is a Deacon at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, NY and a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. She is also a member of WellMet, a female giving circle, focused on finding solutions for social justice issues in NYC.


9 HEALTH PROFESSIONS ADMISSIONS PANEL [Theater] 11:00am-12:00pm MODERATOR David L. Bell, MD, MPH serves as Associate Dean of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at the Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S). He has been a member of the VP&S admissions committee for over a decade, playing a crucial role in recognizing and nurturing the visible and "invisible" diversity within each incoming class. PANELISTS George Jenkins, DMD, MHA, serves as Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean of the Office of Access, Equity, and Inclusion at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. George Jenkins graduated from Seton Hall University in 1995. He went on to New Jersey Dental School, where he earned his DMD in 1999. He completed a General Practice Residency in 2000 and an Oral Medicine Fellowship in 2002, both at New Jersey Dental School. Dr. Jenkins also completed the Executive Masters of Heath Administration at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in 2016. Currently, Dr. Jenkins is clinical faculty in the triage/radiology clinic, instructing 3rd and 4th year dental students. Dr. Jenkins is a nationally recognized author and motivational speaker. Dr. Jenkins has co-authored three books, two of which were New York Times best sellers. He is also co-founder of The Three Doctors Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2000. He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including a congressional record from the United States Congress. Dennis Scott-Torbet (he/him) is a Assistant Director, Student Affairs at the Columbia University School of Nursing. In the role, he serves as Disability Services Liaison for School of Nursing students and assists in the admissions and recruitment process. Previously, Dennis worked in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University supporting PhD students and The New School where he served as Director of Housing and Residential Education. He is originally from the Boston area and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he received his Master of Education in Higher Education Administration and Bachelor of Arts in History.

12 Breakout Session: DUAL DEGREE PANEL [Theater] 2:15pm-3:00pm MODERATOR Deya Luna serves as the Program Manager for the Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at the Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S). She manages the office’s portfolio of pathway programs, as well as its VP&S student life initiatives. PANELISTS Christopher DeAllie, MD, grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Cornell University from 2012 to 2016. With an early passion for medicine, he participated in SHPEP at Columbia University in the summer of 2014. He later graduated from Cornell University in 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Human Biology, Health & Society, and he was accepted into medical school at Columbia University. He then went on to pursue both an MD and an MBA at Columbia University taking advantage of an accelerated dual-degree program that Columbia offers to medical students. After graduating in 2021 from both programs, he stayed at Columbia University for residency in anesthesiology. He will be finishing residency in two years with potential plans to pursue fellowship in interventional pain. Simileoluwa Falako, MPH is rising second year student at Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. She is currently serving as President of the Black and Latino Student Organization, as well as an Equity & Justice Health Fellow. Before VP&S, Simileoluwa received an MPH in the Social & Behavioral Sciences from the Yale School of Public Health as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology from Harvard University. Joshua Taliaferro is an MD-PhD candidate at Columbia University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Princeton University, with certificates in Engineering Biology, in Spanish, and in Neuroscience. His PhD research focuses on the neural basis of cognition in health and illness. Akeem Pinnock is a fourth-year MD-PhD student who is currently working in lab. He works on adipose tissue biology, particularly investigating factors that limit fat expansion and impact weight gain.


13 Breakout Session: PRACTICING SELF-COMPASSION AS A PRE-HEALTH STUDENT PRESENTER: Dr. Jane Bogart [9th Floor - 9T] 2:15pm-3:00pm Jane Bogart, EdD, MCHES joined Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) Student Health in September 2008. Previously, she was Coordinator of Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and, prior to that, she was Director of Health Promotion at NYU (1995-2005). At NYU, she was a recipient of the “Arnold Grossman Outstanding Staff/Faculty Service to the LGBT Community Award.” Dr. Bogart has taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, from which she earned both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Health Education. Before working in the field of College Health, Dr. Bogart was a Health Education Specialist at the Washington Heights-Inwood Healthy Heart Program, a Research Assistant in the Department of Health and Behavior Studies at Teachers College, and a Fashion Marketing Assistant at Associated Dry Goods. She was a Design and Environmental Analysis major at Cornell University, but fulfilled her dream of dancing professionally by appearing on the TV show "Fame" and dancing with Mickey Mouse. Dr. Bogart is a former Certified Exercise Instructor and personal trainer. When not working, Dr. Bogart likes to keep moving – she is happy swimming, cycling, kayaking or cross-country skiing. She satisfies her creative side by taking classes in ceramics, jewelry making, and textile arts.

The event will be held at The Riverside Church in the City of New York on Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 10:00am to 3:00pm. We look forward to welcoming approximately 250 students from the Tri-State area. Most attendees will be summer scholars who are participating in pipeline programs at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. As a conference exhibitor, your registration includes admission to participate in the recruitment fair portion of the event and lunch. EVENT SCHEDULE The fair will be held in the Assembly Hall at the Riverside Church (490 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10027). 18 SHIPPING INFORMATION Incoming Shipments: Due to limited storage space and staff, we are unable to accept more than two boxes per table. Packages should not weigh more than 20lbs each. Please be sure to tape the additional shipping label (found on the last page of this document) to all of your packages. This will help us identify and appropriately place your materials. Note that packages will only be accepted on Monday July 10th and Tuesday July 11th. Packages should be delivered between 9am and 5pm. Please mail packages to the following address: Attn: 2023 Tri-State Fair Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging 104 Haven Avenue Suite 10-03 New York, NY 10032 Return Shipments: You will be responsible for repackaging any materials remaining at the end of the fair. Please come prepared with your own return shipping boxes, labels and packing tape. If you want to use a courier service, you will need to call and schedule your own pickup and/or find an appropriate drop-off location for shipment back to your home institutions. We do not accept any responsibility for missing packages or damaged materials.


19 DIRECTIONS By Public Transit Subway: Take the 1 Train to 116th Street. Walk north along Broadway to 120th Street, turn left and walk one block to Claremont Avenue, then turn right. The Claremont Avenue entrance will be on your left. Bus: Take the M-104, M-4, or M-5 bus to 120th or 122nd Street. For additional bus and subway information, visit http://new.mta.info/ PARKING The Claremont Avenue Garage is operated by Rapid Park Inc., and is accessed from 120th Street between Riverside Drive and Claremont Avenue. Normal hours of operation are daily from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight. There is a fee for parking. A limited amount of street parking may also be available.
