Welcome to the 8th annual Code Red event!
When I was diagnosed with HIV in January 2012, I experienced great silence and stigma
surrounding HIV. I didn’t know where to go, who to talk to, or what to expect for my future
health. During that scary time in my life, I felt I had to make a change for next person
diagnosed with the virus.
I knew I could use my drag persona, Cherry Pop, as a voice and platform to make a difference
in our community. I wanted to create a fun atmosphered event where people could enjoy
a show while learning important information about HIV treatment and prevention options
available in the city. Being open about my status, I could be a friendly face that people could
go to for help, as well as help to shatter the stigma surrounding the virus.
December 2013, I created Code Red with the assistance of a dear friend Brandon Barlieb.
Since then, with the help of Brandon, my fellow entertainers, the support of local businesses
and the growing number of attendees to Code Red, we’ve made huge progress on breaking
the silence surrounding HIV; we’ve shattered the stigma surrounding the virus; we’ve helped
so many people find comfort in their diagnosis; more people know their status and are now
taking further steps to protect themselves with the help of affordable ART and PrEP.
This year I took on the assistance from the amazing John Burd to become my new cohost of
the event, and we both have big plans for the future of Code Red. I want to thank everyone
who has been a part of Code Red this far, and look forward to expanding our mission with
you all in the future. So far we’ve raised over $128,000!
The cast of Code Red promises to continue this event until we have gotten to Zero! Sex is a
healthy part of human nature, but let’s make it safe. Know your status, and know that it’s ok to
be known as HIV+.
