SAMPLE CLUB CONTEST AGENDAS
Introduction
It is important to have an agenda for any club (or higher level) contest. This allows the contest
to flow smoothly, and keeps it organized and on time. An agenda also lets dignitaries,
volunteers, the audience and especially contestants know what will be happening so they can
be prepared.
Clubs (and higher levels) do have many options when conducting contests.
Which contests (usually decided by the District)?
The International Speech contest is always held in the Spring; then Humorous
Speech contest is held in the Fall.
Some districts hold the Table Topics Contests in the Fall; others conduct this in
the Spring.
Some districts have “Tall Tales” and/or other varieties of speech contest
instead of or in addition to the Humorous Speech contest.
Hold one or both contests at same meeting?
Clubs restricted on time may hold two separate contest meetings.
Which contest first at the event?
Usually the speech contest is held last to highlight the most important
competition.
Some clubs like the speech contest to go first, so that nervous speakers can
enjoy the rest of the contest, and so that speakers competing in both contests
can be better focused when the second contest starts.
Will there be a “theme” for the contest?
Add excitement to the contest by announcing a theme. Highlight it on the flyers,
agenda, decorations, and even costumes by the functionaries and guests.
Will there be a “fundraiser” during the contest (to cover costs)?
Common fundraisers are admission fees, 50/50 raffles, and silent auctions.
Add some excitement to the contest by announcing a theme. Highlight it on the flyers,
agenda, decorations, and even costumes by the functionaries and
A Gentle Reminder: it is NOT APPROPRIATE to identify the judges for the contest, either on
the agenda or by any announcement. However, it is considerate to recognize special guests
(even if they happen to be judges; just do not mention that role). It is appropriate to recognize
the other volunteers and their roles, if space allows on the agenda and schedule.
Below are two sample contest agendas – one in Portrait, one in Landscape orientation. Only
one landscape cover is presented.
